The Application Of A Falls Risk Index, Marcelline R. Harris Jan 1986

The Application Of A Falls Risk Index, Marcelline R. Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the prospective use of a falls risk index. The research question was: To what extent do the intrinsic factors identified in the Tinetti et al. falls risk index predict which patients are likely to experience a fall. Hogue's ecological model of falls in late life provided a conceptual framework for the study.
Direct observation was used to collect baseline data from a convenience/purposive sample of 26 male patients in a midwest nursing home care unit with a rehabilitation focus. Patients were then assigned to one of three risk groups: yes-fall, 30% chance of fall, no-fall. Reports of …

Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon Jan 1986

Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Two experiments were conducted to test the SVO Expectancy Hypothesis. This hypothesis embodies three claims: (a) the syntactic parsing device has an initial expectation for the SVO (syntactically defined) structure, (b) the parser reads or tracks the syntactic information in the utterance to confirm or adjust its predictions, and (c) the parser has the ability to make on-line revisions based on the syntactic information contained within the utterance.

In the first experiments using tachistoscopic presentation, 75 sentences representing 15 different sentence types were read by subjects. Each type varied in structure and in the clarity of markers, used to indicate …

The Effects Of Expectancy, Task Importance And Self-Attention On Task Persistence, Jim Jewett Jan 1986

The Effects Of Expectancy, Task Importance And Self-Attention On Task Persistence, Jim Jewett

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study was designed to examine the relative power of control theory (Carver, 1979) and self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977) in predicting behavioral persistence. This study employed a 2 X 2 X 2 X 2 factorial design. One hundred and twelve undergraduate females were exposed to high and low levels of self-attention and task importance as well as positive and negative self-efficacy and outcome expectancies. Following failure on an anagram task subjects’ persistence in solving in insoluble design puzzle was assessed. Contrary to the hypotheses, the results suggested that self-efficacy expectancies, outcome expectancies, task importance and self-attention do not influence persistence …

A Study Of Need Achievement Motivation: Motivational Differences In A Private For Profit Hospital Versus A Non Profit Private Hospital Setting, Kenneth W. Mihill Jan 1986

A Study Of Need Achievement Motivation: Motivational Differences In A Private For Profit Hospital Versus A Non Profit Private Hospital Setting, Kenneth W. Mihill

Theses

The subject of need achievement is of prime importance in today's industry . Motivating employees and using the resources the modern corporation has at its disposal have never been as important to industry as they are today . Unmotivated employees cost corporations heavily in terms of absenteeism and loss of productivity , which are then reflected in profits.

This research project concerns whether or not there are different levels of need achievement in a private non- profit hospital organization versus a private investor- owned (for profit) hospital organization . Three groups , each of 20 subjects, were studied . The …

The Performance Of Reading Disabled 3rd To 6th Graders On The Token Test For Children, Jane J. Kihara

Dissertations and Theses

Many different versions of the original Token Test (De Renzi and Vignolo, 1962) have been available to speech language pathologists as a language assessment tool with various populations. The most recently adapted version of the Token Test is the Token Test for Children developed by DiSimoni (1978) as a measure to detect subtle receptive language abilities in children.

The purpose of this study was to determine ii a significant difference existed between reading disabled and normal readers on syntactic and memory abilities on the Token Test for Children and if a difference existed between reading disabled students in grades 3 …

Two hundred and fifty-four students in general psychology classes were given Rotter's Scale. Considering their upper- and lower-third scores, 54 were classified as " Internals," 53 as "Externals." Subjects also were given written descriptions of both psychoanalytic and behavioristic therapies. Each of these descriptions dealt with the goal and the specific therapeutic procedure of the respective therapies. Subjects were asked to identify which therapy they preferred and to provide …

Speech-Language Clinicians’ Responses To Client Progress, Cheryl Lynn Ferguson Jan 1986

Speech-Language Clinicians’ Responses To Client Progress, Cheryl Lynn Ferguson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Training institutions for speech-language pathologists endeavor to provide student clinicians with a wide variety of academic and clinical experiences. To that end, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) also requires that students receive sufficient exposure to a wide variety of speech-language disorders in order to meet certification requirements. However, the notion that student clinicians should experience successful dismissal is not addressed by training institutions or the literature. The purpose of this investigation was to determine under what conditions students at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Speech and Hearing Clinic dismiss clients and to find out how many of them experience …

A Comparative Study Of Positive Versus Negative Polarity In The Treatment Of Acute Ankle Sprains Utilizing High Voltage Electrogalvanic Stimulation, Lauren Michelle Wells

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Electrical stimulation has long been used in the treatment of a variety of ailments. Its current uses range from muscle re-education and orthotic substitute to scoliosis management and edema control. I chose to study the effect of electrode polarity in high voltage electrogalvanic stimulation in the treatment of edema for several reasons. I had access to subjects because I was the only physical therapist at the Stockton Orthopedic Medical Group. High voltage electrogalvanic stimulation is a commonly used modality in treating edema (Brown, 1981). High voltage generators have a polarity switch, and the direction manual which accompanies the Electro-Med generator …

Patient Perception Of Severity Versus Actual Clinical Severity In Acute Myocardial Infarction (Coronary Care, Cardiac Rehabilitation), Denise Kay Busman Jan 1986

Patient Perception Of Severity Versus Actual Clinical Severity In Acute Myocardial Infarction (Coronary Care, Cardiac Rehabilitation), Denise Kay Busman

Masters Theses

Myocardial infarction affects many people each year. Patients begin to form ideas regarding their myocardial infarction and perceive elements of their environment shortly after admission to the Coronary Care Unit (Runions, 1985). One of the ideas formed concerns the severity level of their myocardial infarction. The pupose of this study was to identify factors contributing to patients' perceptions of the severity level of their myocardial infarction and in turn compare these perceptions with predicted clinical severity. Numerous studies have explored patients' psychosocial reactions and adaptation to coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction. However, few studies identify patients' perceptions of events …

An Investigation Of In Vitro Percutaneous Penetration Enhancement Of Benzocaine By Azone, Dimethylsulfoxide, And 2-Pyrrolidone, Amal Y. Benkorah

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This research utilizing full thickness human abdominal skin was designed to assess the in vitro percutaneous penetration of benzocaine by 1-dodecylazacycloheptan-2-one (Azone) , dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and 2-pyrrolidone (2-P) under conditions of constant thermodynamic activity in the vehicle. The solubilities of benzocaine in Azone and 80/20, 60/40 and 40/60 V/V DMSO/water systems were found to be 254.17, 533.00, 68.60 and 2.51 mg/ml respectively. All three adjuvants demonstrated a significant but concentration- dependent enhancement of benzocaine penetration. On the basis of comparative analysis of the steady-state fluxes, Azone was most effective at the level of 5% V/V when drug concentration was twice …

Music: A Nursing Intervention For Increased Intracranial Pressure, Carol Roberts Jan 1986

Music: A Nursing Intervention For Increased Intracranial Pressure, Carol Roberts

Masters Theses

Individuals with increased intracranial pressure (ICP) from all causes are subject to periods of marked increased intracranial pressures. Research since the 1960's has focused primarily on pathophysiologic causes and on variations between pathologies. Since 1978, nursing research has identified increases in ICP with patient-related activities such as suctioning, vagal stimulations, positioning, turning, noises, and emotive conversations. The use of therapeutic touch has been identified as a nursing intervention that correlates with a lowering of ICP. Since auditory pathways have been shown to be intact even in severely brain-injured individuals, the use of music (the universal language) may be effective in …

Despite these promising results , however, methodological questions in the baseline phase make conclusions regarding a clear relationship between the variables tentative.

Care During Death, Grief And Loss: The Effects Of A Workshop And Clinical Experience On Student Nurses' Attitudes And Actions, Lynda Armstrong Wilson Jan 1986

Care During Death, Grief And Loss: The Effects Of A Workshop And Clinical Experience On Student Nurses' Attitudes And Actions, Lynda Armstrong Wilson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Nurses, members of a society which tends to avoid and deny death, grief, and loss, are frequently in situations where they must interact with persons experiencing grief from death or loss. Often educational experiences have done little to prepare student nurses to cope in positive and supportive ways. Student nurses need to develop self-awareness of their attitudes and anxieties toward death, loss, and grief; modify negative attitudes; and develop a repertoire of interpersonal skills to support persons experiencing grief. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine if academic, and experiential learning could influence the clinical performance of …

The Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Soluble Activator For The Sodium Adenosinetriphosphatase From Rat Cerebral Cortex And The Effect Of Cholinergic Agents, Thibaldo Javier Manrique Blanco

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In order for organisms to co-exist with nonliving matter, envelop to protect their delicate internal functions must be present. There are other reasons for this boundary to exist, e.g. to limit the volume occupied by the organism and to compartmentalize the contents of the organism so that certain critical concentrations may be easily maintained. Such envelopes are, of course, the cellular membranes. Membranes differ greatly between species, as well as within species. Given the complexity to which organisms have evolved, membranes have developed with a myriad of functions and components. It is easy to see differences between plant cellular membranes …
