Perceptions And Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students On Antibiotic Medications, Emily Boask
Perceptions And Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students On Antibiotic Medications, Emily Boask
Honors Theses
On a global scale, antibiotic resistance is a threat to public health. The causes of antibiotic resistance are multifaceted, including healthcare providers overprescribing antibiotics, antibiotic overuse in farming and food production, and antibiotic misuse or malpractices. The public recognizes antibiotic resistance as a significant problem but there are serious knowledge gaps regarding antibiotic resistance and antibiotic stewardship.
University students are a particularly important subpopulation of the public to understand appropriate antibiotic use because many of these individuals are navigating their health concerns on their own for the first time. Many individuals believe that antibiotics can improve cold symptoms, upper respiratory …
Educating Staff To Use The Teach-Back Method Towards Improving Adherence To Antipsychotic Medication, Elizabeth Adebayo
Educating Staff To Use The Teach-Back Method Towards Improving Adherence To Antipsychotic Medication, Elizabeth Adebayo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
My goal for this staff education doctoral project was to improve adherence to antipsychotic medication among patients in a mental health facility through an education initiative for psychiatric intensive care unit staff focused on the teach-back method. The facility had reported a 20% increase in medication noncompliance among post-discharge patients within the past year, primarily attributed to nurses’ lack of adequate patient teaching strategies. I addressed the issue of effective patient education using the teach-back method in improving medication adherence in an inpatient mental health setting. Teaching objectives, content, and test questions were developed based on a substantial body of …
Clinical Utility Of Opencap Motion Analysis In Lower Limb Prosthesis Users, Sarahi Fernandez Leon
Clinical Utility Of Opencap Motion Analysis In Lower Limb Prosthesis Users, Sarahi Fernandez Leon
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
The use of prosthetics has gradually increased due to various diseases, and it is estimated that 35-40 million people are prosthetic/orthotic users, with the number estimated to increase to two billion by 2050. Mobility has been determined to be a strong predictor of quality of life. There are various ways to measure mobility and predict outcomes in lower-limb amputees (LLA), such as self-report and performance-based measures. However, these come with many limitations, showcasing the need for quantitative measures of gait parameters to allow for better development of prosthetic components. Motion analysis tools are expensive and time consuming, but an inexpensive, …
Simulation Education To Improve Confidence Levels In Using Alternative Methods Of Restraint With Children On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Roshni Patel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Summary Seclusion and restraints, while sometimes necessary for patient and staff safety, can result in negative outcomes, including physical and psychological harm to patients. This doctoral project addressed the critical issue of improving inpatient nurses’ confidence in applying alternative methods to seclusion and restraints. These alternatives are essential in psychiatric and acute care settings to promote patient safety, reduce the use of coercive interventions, and support a more humane approach to patient care. The practice problem identified was a notable lack of confidence and knowledge among inpatient nurses regarding using these alternative methods, which led to overreliance on seclusion and …
An Educational Intervention To Increase Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge And Awareness Of Polypharmacy, Kiana Piedrahita
An Educational Intervention To Increase Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge And Awareness Of Polypharmacy, Kiana Piedrahita
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The presence of multiple health problems can contribute to the simultaneous use of multiple medications by an individual, also known as polypharmacy. While polypharmacy can be necessary, it has the potential risk of adverse drug reactions and possible hospitalization. In the local organization, leadership noted that 47% of patients seen are elderly individuals who have multiple comorbidities, indicating the probable use of multiple medications. Thus, purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to determine if an educational intervention focused on polypharmacy and the use of the electronic medical record to manage polypharmacy increased knowledge and awareness among nurse …
Sibling Relationships Through The Lens Of Culture And Inclusion Of Other In The Self, Laura Aguilar
Sibling Relationships Through The Lens Of Culture And Inclusion Of Other In The Self, Laura Aguilar
Honors Thesis
Sibling relationships are formative for identity development and well-being. These relationships vary in closeness due to factors such as age, gender, family dynamics, parenting style and cultural context. Existing literature has shown that siblings from interdependent cultures have closer relationships than those from independent cultures. This thesis proposes that sibling relationships can be examined through the lens of the self-expansion model, focusing on the Inclusion of Other in the Self (IOS) scale. It hypothesizes that those from interdependent cultures will have more inclusion of other in the self than those from independent cultures. Participants from Japan representing the interdependent culture …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Summary This project was a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for practitioners who deliver healthcare services to patients living with mental health disorders. The practice problem addressed by this CPG was lack of mental health patient inclusion in terms of determining treatment plans of care. In back-to-back patient satisfaction surveys, patients indicated they would like to have more say in their treatment plans. The practice problem was important to increase patient input in clinical decision-making practices of practitioners. The project question was: Does evidence support development of a CPG for mental health patient-centered input regarding treatment plans of care that was …

D101n: A Unique And Ill-Understood Familial Als-Related Sod1 Mutant, Analisa Lott
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Background: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease, with 90% of documented cases considered sporadic and about 10% showing a hereditary link; such cases are deemed as familial ALS (fALS). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), a copper-zinc binding enzyme that protects cells from damaging free radicals, has been linked to fALS with certain toxic gain of function mutations, such as the D101N mutant. The human SOD1 D101N mutant has been shown to be associated with rapidly progressing neurodegeneration yet is less prone to aggregation than similar mutants, but its deviation from wild-type (WT) SOD1 remains misunderstood.
Objective: Although the D101N …

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a highly aggressive, heterogeneous disease that arises from the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and originates from neural crest cells (NCCs) (1). NB is the most common extracranial cancer in pediatric accounts for 15% of pediatric cancer deaths (2). This high mortality rate is the result of the metastatic, immune evasive, and treatment resistant characteristics of the disease (3). It has been proposed that NB arises from blocks in differentiation during development, resulting in a mixture of two distinct cell types within the tumor: mesenchymal and adrenergic (Figure 1.1) (4,5). The adrenergic cell type is more differentiated, and …

The Nurse Faculty Compassion Instrument: A Methodological Study, Nancy Pritchard
Dissertations
As nursing shortages rise, nursing faculty have the important responsibility of increasing the number of nursing school graduates that enter the nursing profession. Unfortunately, attrition and retention continue to prevent nursing students from graduating on time or at all. Nursing faculty compassion has been identified as one important factor that could decrease nursing student attrition and increase nursing student retention and program completion. Compassion is a concept built upon the constructs of forming connections, empathetic behaviors, student suffering and faculty recognition of needs, and alleviation of suffering. No existing instruments measure all of these constructs. Some existing tools that measure …

A Scoping Review Of The Prevalence Of Polypharmacy In Dementia Patients In Correlation To Increased Falls And Hospitalizations, Julie Ward, Travis Adelman, Erica Barber, Elizabeth Upton
Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative condition characterized by cognitive decline and behavioral changes, which often necessitates polypharmacy to manage symptoms. There is a negative trade off to polypharmacy in that it increases the risks of falls and hospitalizations. Dementia patients are at an increased risk of falls and hospitalization, making it valuable to examine admission records to identify potentially modifiable risk factors. One of the most prevalent modifiable risk factors is polypharmacy in geriatric populations. Polypharmacy has become prevalent in older adults, not just in dementia. In 2013 a 3-year prospective cohort study of 1,742,336 people >65 years old looked …

Review Of Depression Management In Cardiovascular Disease, Kelsey Pangelinan, Kristy Asbell, Erika Mccarthy
Review Of Depression Management In Cardiovascular Disease, Kelsey Pangelinan, Kristy Asbell, Erika Mccarthy
Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
Introduction
Depression and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are closely interrelated, with depressive symptoms significantly more common in patients with heart disease than in the general population. Several studies have shown that between one-fifth to one-third of patients with severe acute coronary disease exhibit depressive signs, while around 10% meet the standards for major depressive disorder. This heightened occurrence of depression among ACS patients correlates with unfavorable cardiovascular outcomes, an amplified probability of recurrent heart events, and escalating healthcare costs.1 Despite its acknowledged sway on cardiovascular health, depression often goes undiagnosed and untreated in this group. According to the World Health …
