Assessing The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Variables And Risk Of Overweight Among Children 6 Years Of Age, Marilyn Cochon Batan

Theses and Dissertations

Background: The percentage of overweight children has tripled in the last thirty years. Inconsistent findings are published regarding the relationship between socioeconomic variables and being overweight in childhood. Objective: To determine whether socioeconomic variables are associated with risk of being overweight among six year olds. Methods: Six year olds with BMI data were selected from the National Survey of Children's Health (n=4,362). Variables were coded and a low socioeconomic index was created. Using population weights, descriptive statistics were generated and regression was utilized to assess the relationship between socioeconomic variables and being 'at risk' for overweight. Socioeconomic variables were also compared …

The Effect Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Expression Levels Of Ankyrin-G In The Corpus Callosum And Cerebral Cortex, Andrew S. Vanderveer Jan 2005

The Effect Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Expression Levels Of Ankyrin-G In The Corpus Callosum And Cerebral Cortex, Andrew S. Vanderveer

Theses and Dissertations

The ankyrins comprise a family of proteins serving as components of the membrane cytoskeleton, and participate in a diverse set of associations with multiple binding partners including the cytoplasmic domains of transporters, ion channels, some classes of receptors, and cell adhesion proteins. Moreover, evidence is accumulating that ankyrin participates in defining functionally distinct subcellular regions. The complex functional and structural roles of ankyrins indicate they are likely to play essential roles in the pathology of traumatic axonal injury. The current study examined changes in ankyrin-G expression following a moderate central fluid percussion injury administered to adult rats. At 1d, 3d, …

The Effects Of Footshock On The Reinforcing Efficacy Of Cocaine In Male Long-Evans Rats, Elizabeth S. Hendrick Jan 2005

The Effects Of Footshock On The Reinforcing Efficacy Of Cocaine In Male Long-Evans Rats, Elizabeth S. Hendrick

Theses and Dissertations

Many links exist between cocaine abuse and stress. The literature and laboratory studies in rats suggest that this could be because stress increases the reinforcing efficacy of cocaine. Using male Long-Evans rats, experiments in this thesis tested effects of footshock on the reinforcing efficacy of cocaine using a progressive ratio schedule of reinforcement. They also examined effects of footshock on the reinforcing efficacy of a half-maximal dose of cocaine. Finally, they tested the effects of footshock on cocaine self-administration in rats initially resistant to acquisition of cocaine self-administration. Footshock did not increase reinforcing efficacy of cocaine on a PR schedule …

Seeking Life Balance: The Perceptions Of Health Of Cambodian Women In Resettlement, Olivia Catolico Phd, Msn Jan 2005

Seeking Life Balance: The Perceptions Of Health Of Cambodian Women In Resettlement, Olivia Catolico Phd, Msn

Dissertations

This grounded theory study was an inquiry into the perceptions of health of Cambodian women in resettlement and the conditions that influenced their perceptions. Few studies of Cambodian women who escaped political conflict exist. Cambodian women were among the waves of Southeast Asian refugees who have resettled in the United States. The sequelae of significant life trauma upon the health of Cambodian women in resettlement have received little attention in the nursing literature. There is less information about their perceptions of health in resettlement as their beliefs about health and illness causation contrast with those of Western health care providers. …

A Comparison Of Syntax Training For Students With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Clinician-Directed Versus Self-Determined Session Paradigms, Jane O'Regan Kleinert

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Self-determination is the ability to control one’s life and to actively participate in the decisions which affect the direction of one’s life. This ability is considered a critical life skill for individuals with developmental disabilities. The ability to make choices, plan, and self-evaluate are among the primary skills included in the development of self-determination. Currently, there is very limited emphasis on the importance of self-determination in the literature of communication disorders. This study was designed to determine if a teaching paradigm which incorporates key elements of self-determination is as or more effective and efficient in teaching syntax than a traditional, …

Mechanism Of Cancer Selective Apoptosis By Par-4, Sushma Gurumurthy Jan 2005

Mechanism Of Cancer Selective Apoptosis By Par-4, Sushma Gurumurthy

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Despite distinct dissimilarities, diverse cancers express several common pro-tumorigenic traits. We present here evidence that the pro-apoptotic protein Par-4 utilizes one such common tumorigenic trait to become selectively activated and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Elevated PKA activity noted in cancer cells activated the apoptotic function of ectopic Par-4 or its SAC domain, which induces apoptosis selectively in cancer cells and not in normal or immortalized cells. PKA preferentially phosphorylated Par-4 at the T155 residue within the SAC domain in cancer cells. Moreover, pharmacological-, peptide- or siRNA-mediated inhibition of PKA activity in cancer cells resulted in abrogation of both T155 …

The Use Of A Whole Genome Scan To Find A Genetic Marker For Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis In The Peruvian Paso Horse, Diane I. Strong

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis (DSLD) is a debilitating disease of connective tissues seen in many breeds but has become prevalent in the Peruvian Pasohorse. DSLD is believed to be a genetic disorder caused by one primary founder and most likely has a recessive mode of inheritance although a dominant or co-dominant mode of inheritance has not been ruled out.

A genome scan using 259 microsatellite markers was used to test for linkage disequilibrium between one or more markers and DSLD. Two groups of Peruvian Pasohorses were selected from one population including the US and Canada. The only difference between the …

Factors That Influence Mammography Use Of Community Health Workers, Cynthia M. Kratzke Jan 2005

Factors That Influence Mammography Use Of Community Health Workers, Cynthia M. Kratzke

Health Services Research Dissertations

Community health worker (CHW) interventions promote early detection of breast cancer and mammography use to help eliminate health disparities for minority and low-income women. Data trends show lower mammography use among this population although CHW interventions have been shown to promote mammography use. However, CHW interventions have not been tested sufficiently to examine the factors that influence mammography use of CHWs.

This cross-sectional study examined the factors that influence mammography use of CHWs and the relationship of self-efficacy, social norms, and mammography use of CHWs. The PRECEDE model served as the framework combining social factors, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and accessibility …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a skilled videotape model with or without attention-focusing cues on the performance of a non-dominant hand basketball foul shot. It was hypothesized that attention-focusing cues of a skilled videotape model would have no significant effect on the non-dominant hand basketball foul shot performance of adolescents. Thirty participants (22 male, 8 female) were randomly assigned and stratified by gender into one of two groups: skilled videotape model with cues and skilled videotape model without cues. Each participant completed 22 blocks of 50 trials each, with the first and last block …

The Influence Of Caffeine On The Hydration Status Of College-Aged Females, Carissa Shima Jan 2005

The Influence Of Caffeine On The Hydration Status Of College-Aged Females, Carissa Shima

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is commonly believed that caffeine negatively effects hydration status by acting as a diuretic agent. However, previously reported findings on the effects of caffeine on hydration status are controversial. These studies predominantly used healthy college-aged males. Researchers have suggested that females may respond differently to caffeine than males. Some of these differences may be attributed to menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive steroid (OCS) use. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a 365 mg dose of caffeine would alter urine output (volume) and hydration status (urine specific gravity) in college-aged females while controlling for the menstrual cycle …

The purpose of this study was to determine if storybook based intervention improved language skills in language impaired children. Eight children from a local Head Start Program participated in the study, four of whom caused the teacher language concerns and four of whom did not. On pretesting, six of the children demonstrated scores consistent with language impairment and two scored within normal limits. The four children who scored the lowest in the testing were chosen to participate in storybook intervention. Participants received individual instruction in 30-minute sessions twice weekly for 6 weeks. A teacher questionnaire report was completed by the …

The Search For An Effective International Regime For The Long-Term Safety And Security Of High Level Radioactive Waste: Pangea And Beyond, Vincent Cusack Jan 2005

The Search For An Effective International Regime For The Long-Term Safety And Security Of High Level Radioactive Waste: Pangea And Beyond, Vincent Cusack

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis is a study of public policy issues relating to multinational geological repositories for high-level radioactive waste disposal (HLW). Nuclear states have attempted for decades to implement effective radioactive waste policies, though with limited success. The safe disposal of HLW has proven particularly troublesome and, thus far, a solution has eluded all states. A review of radioactive waste policy in the UK, the US and Switzerland reveals some of the underlying themes behind community opposition to repository siting and the reasons for a broader global search. The failure to achieve HLW repositories at a national level has led to …

Performing Successfully In The Heat At The 2004 Olympic Games In Athens: Which Active Cooling Strategies Represent Best Practice For Endurance Athletes, Marc Quod Jan 2005

Performing Successfully In The Heat At The 2004 Olympic Games In Athens: Which Active Cooling Strategies Represent Best Practice For Endurance Athletes, Marc Quod

Theses : Honours

Previous research using athletes has documented that precooling can improve endurance performance, especially in warm conditions. However, research comparing performance following different cooling techniques which are incorporated into a prerace routine is rare. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two precooling techniques on cycling time trial performance in warm conditions. Methods: Six endurance trained, regionally competitive cyclists completed one maximal graded exercise test (V02peak 71.4 ±3.2 ml’kg-1min-1) and four ~40 min laboratory cycling time trials in a heat chamber (34.3 ± 1.1°C; 41.2 ± 3.0% relative humidity (rh)) using …

Pax3 Expression In Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma, Judith A. Blake Jan 2005

Pax3 Expression In Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma, Judith A. Blake

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research investigated the repercussions of aberrant PAX3 re-expression in cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). The transcription, factor encoded by PAX is amongst the first expressed in the embryo, with a principal role in the development of the melanocytic lineage. We theorised that abnormal re-expression of PAX3, consistently observed in CMM as compared to normal melanocytes, is linked to progression of CMM. Previous studies have stated that expression profiles of PAX3 in CMM demonstrate predominant generation of a protein encoded by exons 1-9 (PAX3D) utilizing cryptic splice sites in post-transcriptional pre-mRNA splicing. By contrast, normal human skin demonstrates low level generation …

Understanding Palliative Care: An Ethnographic Study Of Three Australian Palliative Care Services, Judith M. Greaves Jan 2005

Understanding Palliative Care: An Ethnographic Study Of Three Australian Palliative Care Services, Judith M. Greaves

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Palliative care commenced in Australia in the early 1980s. Although the value of palliative care has become more widely recognised by the public and other health care professionals, there is still a lack of understanding about what palliative care is and the depth and scope of this specialty area of health care. The research that I present in this thesis is based on examination of palliative care practice in a selection of Australian services, undertaken with the aim of enhancing understanding of Palliative Care. The significance of the research arises from the notion that members of the Australian community should …

Alcohol And Drug Related Offences: Determining Predictive Factors For Reducing Re-Offending, Rachel Bennett Jan 2005

Alcohol And Drug Related Offences: Determining Predictive Factors For Reducing Re-Offending, Rachel Bennett

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The association between dependent drug use and criminal behaviour is well known. This coupled with evidence about the efficacy of treatment in addressing drug use has led many jurisdictions to incorporate treatment interventions into their criminal justice systems. The aim of these interventions that use the law as a therapeutic agent (known as ‘therapeutic jurisprudence') is to reduce by mandating drug dependent offenders into treatment, future offending. However, within the treatment effectiveness literature there is also evidence of individuals resolving their drug use problems without engagement in treatment. The term ‘natural recovery’ has been used to describe this phenomenon. Research …
