Addressing The Unmet Mental Health Crisis Of Youth In West Englewood, Joallyn Porter
Addressing The Unmet Mental Health Crisis Of Youth In West Englewood, Joallyn Porter
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Chicago youth face significant unmet mental health needs driven by systemic inequalities, community violence, poverty and limited access to care. Alarmingly high rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma impact youth across the city, particularly neighborhoods on the south and west sides, yet far too frequently, stigma, lack of culturally responsive services, and insufficient school and community resources prevent early intervention and effective mental health treatments. Schools, often the first point of contact for mental health support; lack the staffing, funding, and infrastructure necessary to meet growing demands—particularly in under-resourced neighborhoods where families encounter economic and logistical barriers to care. Addressing …
Nursing Students' Clinical Placement Experience In A Residential Aged Care Facility: A Comparative Study, Nitasha Aarni Narayan
Nursing Students' Clinical Placement Experience In A Residential Aged Care Facility: A Comparative Study, Nitasha Aarni Narayan
Theses
Nursing education programs play a significant role in preparing future nurses to care for the growing number of older people who will require health care. A key component of this preparation is the learning that nursing students acquire through clinical placement experience in a residential aged care facility. This clinical placement provides them with opportunities to experience caring for older adults. However, many students are reportedly reluctant to accept clinical placement in aged care and are ill-prepared for the challenges of the residential aged care facility environment. Hence, it is important for the development of future nursing programs and the …
A Nurse-Driven Protocol To Increase Music Therapy Referrals To Manage Patient Pain And Anxiety In The Medicine Intensive Care Unit, Ashley Fox

Background: Critically ill patients often suffer from pain and anxiety. Music therapy is a safe and effective treatment option. However, most nurses never receive education or training on it, resulting in a lack of awareness of its value and its actual usage in care.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to increase the number of music therapy referrals to manage pain and anxiety in eligible medicine intensive care unit (MICU) patients via a music therapy protocol that increased nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and skills related to the use of music as an alternative treatment option for pain and anxiety in …
Evaluating The Efficacy Of A Progressive Mobility Protocol Among Adult Icu Patients, Clayton Chroust
Evaluating The Efficacy Of A Progressive Mobility Protocol Among Adult Icu Patients, Clayton Chroust
DNP Projects
Background: Many intensive care unit (ICU) patients are critically ill and require ventilator support, and they often do not receive any progressive mobility interventions until after they are liberated from the ventilator or receive transfer orders out of the ICU. Current literature suggests that patients in the ICU face deconditioning, increased ventilator days, development of deep vein thrombosis, pressure ulcers, pulmonary embolism, muscular atrophy, and increased days in the ICU which can be attributed to a lack of mobility. Current evidence-based research identifies that utilization of a progressive mobility protocol is one way to improve patient outcomes and reduce …

DNP Projects
Background: Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are the most prevalent healthcare acquired infection (HAI) in the acute care setting. Unfortunately, CAUTIs can lead to high morbidity and mortality rates, longer length of stay (LOS) and increased healthcare costs. Unfortunately, in critically ill patients which often suffer multi-organ failure/injury, there remains an increased risk for infection and poor outcomes.
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to increase medical intensive care unit (MICU) nursing staffs’ knowledge of existing nurse driven indwelling urinary catheter removal protocol and to implement an electronic medical record (EMR) prompt for removal of unnecessary urinary catheters …
Utilizing Integrative Medicine Services For Yoga To Reduce Cancer Related Fatigue, Leah R. Yeager
Utilizing Integrative Medicine Services For Yoga To Reduce Cancer Related Fatigue, Leah R. Yeager
DNP Projects
Background: Cancer related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most prevalent and distressing side effects experienced by individuals undergoing cancer treatment. In fact, many patients report CRF as more debilitating than pain itself. CRF is characterized by persistent, severe exhaustion that is not alleviated by sleep and is not linked to prior exertion. Despite its widespread impact, the options available to manage CRF are limited, typically including practices like good sleep hygiene, balanced nutrition, mindfulness, and supplements. Integrative medicine, particularly yoga, has emerged as a promising intervention for reducing CRF. However, yoga is underutilized as a therapeutic approach to combat …

Evaluating Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, And Suicide Hotline Referrals In Aprns Screening Children For Depression And Suicide In Primary Care, Brooklyn D. Higginbotham
DNP Projects
Background: Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in adolescents across the United States (US). Primary care providers (PCPs) are often the first people an adolescent sees for depression or suicide symptoms; however, evidence shows PCPs may not be comprehensively screening for suicide in the primary care setting by using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) alone. Screening tool usage for depression and suicide among PCPs is currently at rates as low as 26% due to lack of knowledge and insufficient resources. Evidence-based education on American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations can improve PCPs’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes when assessing …

Implementation Of A Pilot Post-Code Debrief Tool Initiated By The Chaplains And Unit Lead Nurses Within The Medicine Intensive Care Unit, Sarah Stigall
DNP Projects
Background: Post-code debriefs are shown to improve teamwork and communication, increase performance, and reduce burnout. According to the University of Kentucky HealthCare (UKHC) policy, teams are to perform a post-code debrief immediately after an in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). However, the current policy does not provide guidance on what to include during a debrief session. At UK post-code debrief sessions are documented as occurring 60-72% of the time; however, personal observation and discussions with other bedside and rapid response nurses suggest that post-code debriefs are underperformed when compared to the documentation. Purpose: This study aimed to explore barriers to post-code debriefs …
Nurse-Led Cbt For Depression In Heart Transplant Patients: A Feasibility Study, Matthew R. Wallace
Nurse-Led Cbt For Depression In Heart Transplant Patients: A Feasibility Study, Matthew R. Wallace
DNP Projects
Background: Heart transplant recipients are at an elevated risk of experiencing depressive symptoms compared to the general population. Those with depression post-transplant face increased complications, e.g., infection, organ rejection, prolonged hospitalization, and higher mortality rates. However, specific psychotherapeutic interventions tailored for heart transplant recipients remain limited. Nevertheless, there is substantial evidence supporting the effectiveness of various interventions for adults with heart failure, a condition frequently diagnosed in these patients. This suggests that successful strategies for managing depressive symptoms in heart failure patients could be adapted for heart transplant recipients.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to evaluate …

Utilization Of Organ Inventories In The Primary Care Setting: Two Questions To Increase Usage, Siobhan A. Lister
DNP Projects
Background: The Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) population experiences significant health disparities in accessing preventative care when compared to their cisgender counterparts. These disparities often occur with organ-specific screenings and lead to poorer health outcomes, due to patients having organs that do not match their sex assigned at birth. The evidence recommends a two-question method of gender identification to identify those patients whose gender does not match their sex assigned at birth. Using the 2-question method can help identify patients who need an organ inventory completed, which will lead to appropriate preventative health screenings being done.
Purpose: The purpose was …

Utilizing Probiotics To Reduce Diet Induced Dysbiosis And Inflammation In Myelodysplastic Syndromes Susceptible Mice, Tejaswee Bolloju
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Human gut microbiota is helpful in digestion by helping in breaking complex carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fibers and many other physiological functions. The Western diet which is high in fat and carbo hydrate percentage alters gut microbiota and leads to growth of pathogenic bacteria and altered gut flora referred to as dysbiosis, which in turn cause gut inflammation and increased permeability of gut and it causes translocation of Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) which causes low grade systemic inflammation. Disturbance in gut microbiota correlated with metabolic conditions like obesity and leads to progression of hematologic diseases like Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS). Myelodysplastic syndromes are …

Multimodal Imaging Of Protein-Based Biomaterials For Delivering Chemo-Agent Cargo For Glioblastoma Treatment In A Murine Model, Orin Mishkit
Dissertations and Theses
Protein-based self-assembling biomaterials, known as Thermo-Responsive Assembled Proteins (TRAP), present meaningful potential as drug delivery carriers. These materials enable the controlled, slow release of poorly soluble chemotherapeutic agents, such as doxorubicin (Dox), while potentially reducing systemic off-target effects. In collaboration with multiple NYU labs, this study evaluated the efficacy of two TRAP variants—TRAP and F-TRAP—as drug delivery carriers in a xenograft mouse model of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).
The primary objective was to compare the effectiveness of TRAP-loaded Dox (TRAP-DOX) to free Dox in achieving tumor extravasation and accumulation, facilitating sustained drug release. We hypothesized that the leaky vasculature of GBM …
