Preserving Memories, Building Relationships, Jamie H. Cochran

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Loneliness among adults aged 65 and older is a significant health concern linked to negative physical and mental outcomes, especially in rural communities. This DNP project implemented a 4-week scrapbooking intervention within a faith-based rural community in North Carolina to reduce feelings of loneliness. Guided by Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, participants engaged in collaborative arts activities designed to foster social connection and emotional expression. The potential results of this project are multifaceted, including improved social engagement, emotional well-being, and strengthened community bonds. The findings support integrating creative, relationship-centered strategies into community nursing practice to enhance well-being among older adults.

Prepared To Protect: Improving Cardiac Emergency Response Through Education And Action Planning In Youth Club Sports, Melissa Garcia

Nursing | Senior Theses

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in youth sports, illuminating the essential demand for adequate emergency response, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) usage, and comprehensive emergency action plans (EAPs). Research shows that despite the importance of prompt intervention, the majority of youth club sports programs outside of the school setting lack the training and resources needed to respond effectively to SCA incidents. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of an educational seminar that includes CPR/AED training and EAP simulation exercises in improving participants’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in managing cardiac emergencies. A quasi-experimental …

Enhancing Advocacy Through Nursing Interventions For Hospitalized Pediatric Oncology Patients With Absent Parents, Ma Seandee Mae Corrales Jan 2025

Enhancing Advocacy Through Nursing Interventions For Hospitalized Pediatric Oncology Patients With Absent Parents, Ma Seandee Mae Corrales

Nursing | Senior Theses

Parental advocacy is essential for high-quality, patient-centered care, particularly in pediatric oncology settings. However, when parents are infrequently present due to responsibilities such as work or caring for other children, pediatric patients may experience advocacy gaps, leading to delays in treatment, miscommunication, and unmet needs. Nurses are uniquely positioned to help address this need, but limited research exists on how nursing policies and educational interventions can enhance nurse-led advocacy in such situations. This research proposal assesses the effectiveness of structured nursing policies and educational programs designed to support nurse-led advocacy for pediatric oncology patients with infrequently present or absent parents. …

Characterizing And Targeting The Non-Catalytic Functions Of Phosphatase Of Regenerating Liver 3 (Prl-3) In Oncogenesis And Cancer Progression, Jeffery T. Jolly Jan 2025

Characterizing And Targeting The Non-Catalytic Functions Of Phosphatase Of Regenerating Liver 3 (Prl-3) In Oncogenesis And Cancer Progression, Jeffery T. Jolly

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Phosphatase of Regenerating Liver 3 (PRL-3) is frequently upregulated in various cancers and is associated with poor patient prognosis. Although traditionally studied for its phosphatase activity, PRL-3 also interacts with the CNNM family of magnesium transporters through its catalytic site, and these two functions are mutually exclusive at any given time. Most previous studies relied on a commonly used PRL-3 mutation that disrupts both phosphatase activity and CNNM binding, making it challenging to determine which function drives its oncogenic effects. To address this gap in the field, I utilized a panel of PRL-3 mutants that selectively disrupt either phosphatase activity …

Conversely, poor mental health and lack of belongingness during PTE may contribute to the underrepresentation of Black Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students and clinicians. Yet not enough is known about the relationships between mental health, belongingness, and the academic achievement of DPT students. Purpose: This study aimed …

Comparative Analysis Of Gut Microbiota In Post-Mortem Chronic Alcoholics Versus Minimal To No Alcohol Users In The Thai Population, Laiba Pervez Jan 2025

Comparative Analysis Of Gut Microbiota In Post-Mortem Chronic Alcoholics Versus Minimal To No Alcohol Users In The Thai Population, Laiba Pervez

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Chronic alcohol consumption induces long-term disruption of the gut microbiota, contributing to inflammation, metabolic imbalance, and impaired intestinal integrity. This study investigated 24 postmortem gut microbiota samples from the Thai population, including 12 chronic alcoholic and 12 non-alcoholic cadavers, focusing on cecal and fecal samples to identify site-specific microbial signatures of alcohol-associated dysbiosis. Following DNA extraction, the V3–V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Data were processed in QIIME for OTU clustering and taxonomic profiling. Alpha (Shannon, Chao1, ACE) and beta (Bray–Curtis) diversity were analyzed with PERMANOVA (p< 0.05) while LEfSe, cladogram, and STAMP analyses identified differentially abundant taxa.. At the phylum level, alcoholic cecal samples (AC) showed a decrease in Firmicutes (59.07%) and increases in Proteobacteria (5.54%), Fusobacteria (8.48%), and Actinobacteria (2.78%) compared with controls (NAC). The rise in Actinobacteria was statistically significant. The class Bacilli was also elevated, reflecting a more oxygenated and inflammatory intestinal environment. At the genus level, Paeniclostridium was enriched in alcoholics, while the butyrate-producing Coprococcus was reduced, suggesting impaired SCFA metabolism and gut barrier function. In fecal samples (AF vs NAF), phylum-level differences were minimal, although Clostridium sensu stricto 1 was notably higher in alcoholics, consistent with inflammation-associated dysbiosis. When comparing gut regions, distinct spatial heterogeneity was observed. Within the alcoholic group, Firmicutes were more abundant in cecum, while Actinobacteria were lower compared to feces. Among controls, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes were enriched in feces, whereas Firmicutes predominated in the cecum. Alpha diversity analysis using ACE and Chao1 indices showed significant differences between cecal and fecal samples of the control group. Overall, postmortem gut microbiota retained distinct alcoholassociated signatures, with the cecum preserving clearer microbial patterns than feces. These findings highlight the cecum’s potential as a reliable site for detecting alcohol-related dysbiosis in forensics.
