Pragmatic Conversational Skills Of Young Adults In Normal, Emr, And Tmr Classrooms, Jane Nicholson Jan 1983

Pragmatic Conversational Skills Of Young Adults In Normal, Emr, And Tmr Classrooms, Jane Nicholson

Dissertations and Theses

Current language theory focuses on how a person communicates within a context (Bates, 1976a). A person's communicative competence depends on how effectively she translates her cognitive and social knowledge into linguistic forms to interact in the specific situation, following pragmatic rules (Prutting, 1982b). Thus, in order to assess a person's language ability accurately, the clinician needs to assess pragmatic skills as well as cognitive, social, and linguistic skills. A person's pragmatic development culminates in the ability to participate in a conversation (Rees, 1978).

Preliminary Study : The Effects Of Instrumentation On The Air Intake Times Of The Esophageal Speaker, Sandra I. Pasak Neuburger Jan 1983

Preliminary Study : The Effects Of Instrumentation On The Air Intake Times Of The Esophageal Speaker, Sandra I. Pasak Neuburger

Dissertations and Theses

This research examined the use of visual feedback provided by electronic instrumentation to reduce air intake times of esophageal speakers during speech management. The subjects were six esophageal speakers from the Portland Metropolitan area. Three subjects made up the experimental group and three were placed in the control group. Prototype instrumentation was used to measure air intake times and give visual feedback to the experimental group during twelve sessions of speech management. The control group participated in traditional speech management procedures to reduce air intake times without benefit of instrumentation. Rate of improvement was measured using the prototype instrumentation without …

Adult Oral Diadochokinesis Rates : Preliminary Normative Data, Carol Kafton-Minkel Jan 1983

Adult Oral Diadochokinesis Rates : Preliminary Normative Data, Carol Kafton-Minkel

Dissertations and Theses

In the clinical evaluation and management of speech disorders, a speech-language pathologist may observe disturbances in a client's motor abilities that suggest possible neurological dysfunction. One possible disturbance is in oral diadochokinesis (DIO), an individual's ability to start and stop the movement of the articulators rapidly and execute repetitive, alternating, sequential movements typically associated with speech articulation. It is often recommended that a speech-language pathologist test DIO speed and compare the performance to available norms. There is, however, a lack of normative DIO data spanning all ages of adulthood. The purpose of this study was to develop preliminary normative data …

Pragmatic Deficits In Normal, Articulation Disordered, And Language Delayed Samples, Karen Jean Lucas

Dissertations and Theses

The purposes of this investigation were to identify, via the Pragmatic Protocol, the incidence of pragmatic disorders within public school articulation and language caseloads and a control group of normal students and to specify the pragmatic areas, i.e., utterance propositional, and/or illocutionary/perlocutionary act categories in which deficits occur.

The Concept Of The Object Relation In The Writings Of Gotthard Booth, M.D.: An Example Of An Emerging Paradigm In Medicine, Thomas Charles Foster Jan 1983

The Concept Of The Object Relation In The Writings Of Gotthard Booth, M.D.: An Example Of An Emerging Paradigm In Medicine, Thomas Charles Foster

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The writings of Gotthard Booth, M.D., especially his concept of object relation, demonstrate a change in medical thought away from a mechanistic to a holistic conception of man. His concept of the object relation and the diagnostic rationale that he developed from it reveal changes in medical conceptualization that are consistent with those changes in conceptualization across a variety of disciplines that have been identified as part of an emerging paradigm.

The Closing Of Homer G. Phillips Hospital And Its Effect On The Infant Mortality Rate Of The City Of Saint Louis, Charles E. Crawford Jan 1983

The Closing Of Homer G. Phillips Hospital And Its Effect On The Infant Mortality Rate Of The City Of Saint Louis, Charles E. Crawford

Theses

The infant mortality statistics in any country reflect the social and economic well-being of its citizens. In the United States the infant mortality rate is regarded as a key indicator of the level of health of the population and by implication, as a measure of the effectiveness of the nation's health delivery system. Further , it is believed by some that infant mortality is the single most important public health problem in this country.

The effect on the infant mortality rate as related to the closing of the only acute care public hospital in an economically depressed community is observed …

Toward A Phenomenological-Based Perspective Of Acculturation With Application To Scottish Immigrants, Dorothy M. Sermol Jan 1983

Toward A Phenomenological-Based Perspective Of Acculturation With Application To Scottish Immigrants, Dorothy M. Sermol

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an attempt to construct a perspective of the acculturation of immigrants drawing on certain communication- based phenomenological assumptions. From these phenomenological assumptions a Framework of Acculturation is constructed as a guide through which to examine the acculturation process. The Framework of Acculturation is then applied to the particular group of Scottish immigrants who live in the Northwest of the United States.

The Development And Evaluation Of A Seminar For Teachers On The Awareness And Management Of Allergic Conditions Of Their Students In The Classroom, Elwin C. Munson

Dissertations

Problem. Many children with allergic problems go without treatment because their problems go unrecognized by both their parents and teachers. The purpose of this project was to bring about change on the part of teachers enabling them better to address allergic problems in their students. Literature was reviewed with respect to allergies and with respect to the use of inservice seminars for teachers. The posttest means for all three areas of measurement of the seminar group and control group were adjusted for pretest scores by analysis of covariance which indicated a significant difference in favor of the seminar group in …

Assertiveness Training With Mildly Mentally Retarded Institutionalized Persons, David Larry Bokor Jan 1983

Assertiveness Training With Mildly Mentally Retarded Institutionalized Persons, David Larry Bokor

Masters Theses

Assertiveness training is a psychological intervention strategy designed to develop the skills of individuals who fail to defend and express their rights, feelings, or beliefs in a straightfoward manner.

Currently there is no set procedure regarding the composition of assertiveness training when modified to suit the needs of various populations. However a vast majority of professionals do employ effective basic techniques, i.e. behavior rehearsal, coaching, feedback, and social reinforcement to shape assertive request and refusal behavior.

Low intelligence limits the mentally retarded person's ability to cope with emotional difficulties. Individuals that recognize their limitations often experience feelings of inadequacy, frustration, …

Protein Contributions Of The Male Accessory Organs To The Composition Of Human Seminal Plasma As Determined By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis, Edward E. Gaunt Jan 1983

Protein Contributions Of The Male Accessory Organs To The Composition Of Human Seminal Plasma As Determined By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis, Edward E. Gaunt

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Human Seminal Plasma was evaluated using a High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis technique adapted by this laboratory. Seminal plasma from healthy volunteers with recently proven fertility were characterized using this technique to establish "normal" protein distribution patterns in the two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel slab. In addition, time studies were performed on selected specimens to determine the effects of liquefaction on seminal plasma protein composition within the first several hours after collection. Split ejaculates were collected for identification and elaboration of accessory organ components in the whole seminal plasma specimen. A more direct approach to accessory organ component analysis involved electrophoresis of semen …
