Time-Related Changes In Rat Androgen Binding Protein Following A Sterilizing Dose Of 3-Chloro-1, 2-Propanediol, Shirley J. Stein

Masters Theses

Androgen binding protein (ABP) is produced by the Sertoli cell, regulated by FSH and androgens, secreted into the testicular fluid, and transported into the caput epididymis where it is thought to play a role in sperm maturation. In this study, the response of ABP to a lesion created chemically by administration of a single, oral 60 mg/kg dose of alpha-chlorohydrin was examined in ninety day old male rats. Total testicular ABP content increased progressively for four days after treatment and there after declined whereas, epididymal ABP concentration decreased immediately. Serum testosterone showed no significant variation from controls, however, serum FSH …

The Effects Of Fixed-Ratio And Fixed-Interval Schedules Of Reinforcement On Generalization Gradients, Christy L. Sutton

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fixed-ratio and fixed-interval schedules of reinforcement on generalization gradients. The subjects were four female rats from the Fischer strain. All subjects v/ere conditioned in the presence of a 2000 hz tone to press the bar for reinforcement. Each subject was then trained to one of the following-schedules of reinforcement: FR-5, FR-30, FI-5, or FI-30. After maintenance on this terminal schedule for three days the subjects were tested for generalization. The generalization test consisted of variations in the frequency of the original SD. Response rate was recorded and gradients of …

Consciousness, Neurons, And Laughing Gas, Dody Michelson Orendurff Aug 1979

Consciousness, Neurons, And Laughing Gas, Dody Michelson Orendurff

Dissertations and Theses

Psychological and physiological effects of nitrous oxide resemble those of eight other drug categories. Lipid solubility or hydrate microcrystal theories correlate behavioral measures with measurable parameters of the molecule N2O. N2O, a spindle poison, halts mitosis in metaphase, producing widespread physiological consequences. N2O affects the microtubules of the spindle in a number of specific ways. Microtubules are utilized in other parts of eukaryotic cells, in a wide variety of functions. In neurons, microtubules build and maintain dendritic sensory processes. Since microtubules are built of two dissimilar proteins, constantly assemble and disassemble, and maintain a …

Ear Lateralization For Time Compressed Rhymed Word Sequences: Primacy And Recency Effects, Janet Lee Patterson Aug 1979

Ear Lateralization For Time Compressed Rhymed Word Sequences: Primacy And Recency Effects, Janet Lee Patterson

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Primacy and recency effects for lateralized time compressed rhyme sequences were investigated. Subjects were forty normal hearing, right handed, young adult listeners. Stimuli were 0% and 60% time compressed five word rhyme sequences presented with no masking and contralateral multitalker masking. Item errors and order errors were counted for each position in the rhyme word sequences. A series of analyses of variance were computed for paired differences of positions in the sequences for each ear and error type to assess differential primacy and recency effects.

Pancreatic Function In Cystic Fibrosis: As Measured In The Chronically Reserpinized Rabbit Model, Mitchell L. Shiffman Jul 1979

Pancreatic Function In Cystic Fibrosis: As Measured In The Chronically Reserpinized Rabbit Model, Mitchell L. Shiffman

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Pancreatic juice was collected from rabbits treated for seven days with reserpine and from untreated controls. In the treated animals the volume of pancreatic juice secreted, the flow rate and the bicarbonate output were all significantly less, while the total protein concentration, the amylase activity and the calcium concentration of the juice were all significantly elevated. This elevation in the protein concentration was due to increased amounts of protein and decreased amounts of water. Histological sections of the pancreas of treated animals revealed the presence of large amounts of PAS-positive material within the duct lumen. Since these secretory and morphological …

The Mcleod Erythrocyte Membrane: Freeze Fracture Electron Microscopy And Membrane Protein Electrophoresis, Carolyn S. Glaubensklee Jul 1979

The Mcleod Erythrocyte Membrane: Freeze Fracture Electron Microscopy And Membrane Protein Electrophoresis, Carolyn S. Glaubensklee

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The McLeod erythrocyte is characterized by a weak Kell antigenicity, lack of Kx antigen, and an abnormal cell morphology. These properties are shared by the prepositus, Hugh McLeod, and male children afflicted by type II chronic granulomatous disease. X-linked chronic granulomatous disease involves the inability of affected leukocytes to digest phagocytized bacteria leading to premature death. Prior studies have shown the McLeod erythrocyte membrane to be not only antigenically abnormal, but also exhibit an abnormal acanthocytic shape and decreased water permeability. These properties were found to be independent of the membrane phospholipid composition, cholesterol/phospholipid ratio, and microviscosity. The decreased water …

Detection Of Unique Tumor-Associated Proteins In The Urine Of Patients With Transitional Cell Carcinoma By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Robert David Lehman Jul 1979

Detection Of Unique Tumor-Associated Proteins In The Urine Of Patients With Transitional Cell Carcinoma By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Robert David Lehman

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic technique was developed for the detection of unique tumor-associated proteins in urine of patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder. This technique yielded high resolution of polypeptides in the urine of cancer patients. Urine was chosen as a source of tumor-associated components because the location of the tum or should release already solublized tum or substances in to the urine.

Urinary proteins were concentrated and then analyzed by the two - dimensional electrophoretic technique using isoelectric focusing in the first dimension and sodium dodecylsulfate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the second dimension. …

Fatigue Properties Of Orthodontic Wire, Kirkland B. Reuer Jun 1979

Fatigue Properties Of Orthodontic Wire, Kirkland B. Reuer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Fracture of orthodontic appliances can be a problem because of the time involved to replace and repair them. It has been shown that most failures have been a result of fatigue fracture, i.e., failure resulting from cyclic loading.

The purpose of this study was to determine what effect variation of the type of orthodontic wire and heat treatment had on fatigue resistance. A device was constructed to put a cyclic load on a piece of wire until fracture. Two types of cobalt-chromium alloy wire (Blue and Green Elgiloy from Rocky Mountain Orthodontics) and three types of stain less steel wire …

The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.

At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …

The Acquisition Of Five Specific Morphemes By English-Speaking Preschool Children, Maxine Ulyate Jun 1979

The Acquisition Of Five Specific Morphemes By English-Speaking Preschool Children, Maxine Ulyate

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of the present research was to study the acquisition of the morphemes involved in the production of the noun plural and possessive, the present progressive tense, the third person singular of the verb and the regular past tense. Research had documented that a time lapse existed between the time that a child was able to correctly inflect a common English word and when he could correctly inflect a phonetically similar nonsense item. This lapse appeared to be the time during which the child formulated an internal rule for the production of each morpheme.

The methodology involved testing sixty …

The Effects Of Orally Administered Charcoal On Intestinal Gas, Herbert J. Thompson Jun 1979

The Effects Of Orally Administered Charcoal On Intestinal Gas, Herbert J. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Our primary objectives were to determine if orally administered charcoal effectively decreased intestinal gas, and relieved subjective symptoms associated with a high gas producing meal.

The adsorptive properties of charcoal for those gases usually found in intestines (CO2, H2, CH4, H2S) were first tested by placing measured samples of each gas alone with weighted samples of activated charcoal in a respirometer.

The degree of adsorption of each gas by charcoal was determined. Charcoal effectively adsorbed H2 and CO2.

A group of normal human males were fed a gas producing …

The Effect Of Primary Nursing On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care, Karen Garrison Jun 1979

The Effect Of Primary Nursing On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care, Karen Garrison

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nursing as a profession has seen the loss of large numbers of practitioners through job dissatisfaction. In addition, recent studies testing professional growth among new graduates have demonstrated negative findings. Lack of responsibility and accountability have been indicated as potential causes of these problems which confront professional nursing.

In nursing modalities such as functional, case method and team nursing the lack of autonomy in providing care is visible. The team nursing approach fragments patient care; a nurse in this system is responsible for team members rather than directly for patients. The registered nurse does not have enough personal contact in …
