Patient-Focused Care: The Restructuring Of Healthcare, William E. Brown

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of restructuring or redesigning the current healthcare delivery system. with a primary emphasis on the concept of patient-focused care. Patient-focused care is defined as the redesign of patient care so that hospital resources and personnel are organized around patients. rather than around various specialized departments.

An overview of the healthcare delivery system prior to 1980 pointed out that healthcare expenses were increasing at far too rapid a rate. The number of Americans without healthcare benefits was climbing and medical record management was out of control. Hospital information systems were obsolete and professional territorialism …

Getting Ready For Total Joint Replacement Surgery: A Pre-Operative Education Program, Jason R. Delaney

Theses

Today's health care system is in a state of constant flux attempting to merge, decrease jobs and increase profits. A method to accomplish the goal for increased profits is to have a decline in the number of days any patient remains in the hospital. One such facility attempting to achieve this goal is a 340 bed acute care hospital in the Midwest.

ln the view of the author it seems possible for the physical and occupational therapy departments to have the ability to improve outcomes and decrease the total amount of time any patient remains hospitalized. With this in mind, …

Healthy Back Promotion Program: Barriers To Implementation, A. Alice Endter

Master's Projects

The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioners (OHNPs) and the education specialist at a community hospital in northern California designed and implemented the Patient Lifting Equipment Program and protocol. After 1 year, the investigator used a questionnaire to identify and describe 17 female subjects' barriers to implementing the new equipment and protocol and their risk factors for back injuries. The barriers that the subjects cited most often were increased time to prepare and use the devices and the lack of staff who could assist with the lifts. Risk factors, e.g., age, body mass index, hours worked, stress on the job, and social …

The Differences Between Women And Men In The Length Of Time Between Onset Of Cardiac Symptoms And Undergoing A Cardiac Catheterization, Anita Gertsch

Master's Projects

Coronary artery disease is a leading cause of death among women. Even so, research suggests that women continue to receive less aggressive cardiac treatment than men. The purpose of the research was to determine if there was a time difference in initiation of cardiac catheterization in a selected population of men and women. A chart review was completed on adult women (n=20) and men (n=20), with varied adult ages, at a hospital based cardiac catheterization laboratory in Northern California. The charts were chosen randomly from the daily catheterization list. Data collection included age, gender, preferred spoken language, pay source, prior …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Direct Observed Therapy Program With Vietnamese Tuberculosis Patients, Jacqueline T. Mac Jan 1997

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Direct Observed Therapy Program With Vietnamese Tuberculosis Patients, Jacqueline T. Mac

Master's Projects

Tuberculosis (TB) has long been recognized as a major public health problem. The rate of TB is high in immigrants and the frequency of drug resistance is increasing. A major reason for the development of resistant infections as well as relapse is poor adherence to TB treatment. In response to this problem, direct observed therapy (DOT) was introduced to the TB program in Santa Clara County in 1993. The purpose of this study is to compare the completion rates, relapse rates, and sputum conversion rates between a DOT group and a non-DOT group of Vietnamese TB patients. A chart review …

An Investigation Of A Theoretical Model Of Willingness To Donate Blood, Douglas Adam Jan 1997

An Investigation Of A Theoretical Model Of Willingness To Donate Blood, Douglas Adam

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Australian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (ARCBTS) in Western Australian faces a major problem with periodic shortages of blood components. These shortages are expected to become more frequent and severe as demand continues to increase at a faster rate than supply. Given that only five percent of the population is registered as blood donors, clearly, the challenge for the ARCBTS is to encourage more people to become regular blood donors. The current study was undertaken to assist the ARCBTS in achieving this goal, by identifying and investigating the factors that influence people's willingness to donate blood. Based on the …

Living With Mental Illness: A Descriptive Study Of Individual Adult Experiences Of Living With Mental Illness In Zomba, Malawi, Ivy J. Lekera

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of mental illness in the adult Malawian context. Using the interpretive paradigm, content analysis was used to uncover the lived experiences of mental illness. This study was based on the philosophy that meaning of a phenomenon is best understood if studied within its specific context and within Parse's theoretical framework. Two to four per cent of the global population share the experience of mental illness, however, little is known of individual experiences within the Malawian context. Much of the literature has focused on the physiological aspects, causes, and therapies involved …

The Effects Of Sex Guilt And Communication On Condom Use, Renée M. Souva

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether sex guilt and communication were related to condom use. This study examined sex guilt and communication and how they predict condom use. The participants were 80 female undergraduates recruited from psychology classes at Eastern Illinois University. Mosher's revised Sex Guilt Inventory and Catania's Health Protective Communication Scale were administered along with a question that assessed condom …
