Mental health stigma serves as a significant barrier to seeking help, often leading to maladaptive coping strategies. Given these complexities, it is essential to validate the Satisfaction With Life Scale Revised (SWLS-R) within the Filipino context to assess its psychometric reliability, cultural relevance, and suitability for evaluating well-being and mental health outcomes among Filipinos.

Background: Instrumental avoidance is a coping strategy that plays a critical role in anxiety and trauma-related disorders. Yet, the neural mechanisms supporting instrumental avoidance and its interaction with extinction learning remain incompletely understood.

Methods: Fifty-nine healthy adults completed a two-day fMRI paradigm including Pavlovian threat conditioning, avoidance learning, extinction, and memory recall. Subjective reports measuring the 'fear ratings' for each CS were administered and analyzed across all experimental phases. Neural responses were analyzed using univariate general linear modeling and multivariate pattern analysis with a validated threat/safety decoder. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm posits that early environmental factors may influence a child’s development and long-term health outcomes. Developmental programming (DP) is central to this paradigm, whereby specific early life exposures during critical periods of development are associated with changes to physiological and metabolic pathways, potentially predisposing individuals to disease. However, no standard definition of DP exists, and various terms have been used to describe similar processes. Headache disorders are among the most disabling neurological conditions, affecting over 1.5 billion people globally. Despite advances in pharmacological therapies, major inequities persist due to underdiagnosis, undertreatment and limited access to effective care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Background: Obesity may complicate clinical assessment and ultrasound (US) evaluation in children with appendicitis, potentially increasing reliance on computed tomography (CT). At the same time, national pediatric quality-improvement initiatives and ALARA-driven imaging pathways emphasize reducing CT use and promoting US-first approaches. Data examining how body mass index (BMI) influences diagnostic pathways within these modern low-radiation protocols are limited.

Objective: To determine whether higher BMI is associated with greater CT utilization, escalation from US to CT, nondiagnostic US examinations, emergency department (ED) length of stay (ED-LOS), and operative duration in children with appendicitis.

Design/Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients < 18 years with surgically confirmed appendicitis presenting to a tertiary pediatric ED from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2023. Consistent with prior dataset methodology, encounters were identified through structured EHR query using ICD-10 and CPT codes and restricted to unique first visits. A total of 2,275 children were included; BMI was available for 2,012 (88%). BMI was analyzed in quartiles. Imaging modality (US-only, CT-only, or CT after US) and operative duration (proxy for case complexity) were evaluated. χ² and Wilcoxon tests and odds ratios (OR) with 95% CI were used. Recent studies have demonstrated that a subset of long “noncoding” RNAs (lncRNAs) produce functional polypeptides and proteins. In this study, we discovered a 132 amino acid protein in human breast cancer cells named XCP (X-linked Cancer-associated Polypeptide), which is encoded by lncRNA1456 (a.k.a. RHOXF1P3), a transcript previously thought to be noncoding. lncRNA1456 is a pancreas- and testis-specific RNA whose gene is located on chromosome X. We found that the expression of lncRNA1456 and XCP is highly upregulated in the luminal A, luminal B, and HER2 molecular subtypes of breast cancer. Background: Platelet rich plasma (PRP) refers to the processed product of autologous peripheral blood with a concentration of platelets higher than baseline. This product has garnered interest for 30 years as a potential method of regenerative medicine. PRP injections have shown to be an effective treatment for patellar tendinopathy. Background: Studies investigating social anxiety disorder (SAD) have reported inconsistent alterations in white matter (WM) microstructure. The ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis)-Anxiety Working Group investigated differences in the microstructure of 25 WM tracts between individuals with SAD and healthy control (HC) participants in a mega-analysis.

Methods: We analyzed data from 487 individuals with SAD and 1604 HC participants (ages 8-65 years) from 12 cohorts worldwide. The prevalence and clinical significance of mixed Plasmodium infections in children with severe Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria are not well characterized. In a cohort of 440 Ugandan children hospitalized with severe malaria who were diagnosed with Plasmodium species via microscopy, nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) testing was used to detect P. falciparum, Plasmodium ovale (P. ovale), Plasmodium malariae (P. malariae), and Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) infections and assess their association with adverse clinical outcomes during hospitalization. Using nPCR testing, the Plasmodium 18S small-subunit ribosomal RNA gene was detected in 440 children. Plasmodium falciparum mono-infection was identified in 329 (74.8%) …

Background and objectives

Treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) >5 cm is problematic, as patients are often outside transplantation criteria, and cirrhosis compromises curative resection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate survival following treatment with ablation compared to chemotherapy in large HCC.

Methods

This was a retrospective cohort study of the National Cancer Database (NCDB) Participant User File from 2004 to 2017. Patients with HCC >5 cm in diameter treated with ablation versus chemotherapy alone were compared. Inverse probability-weighted propensity scores were used to model treatment assignments in the Cox proportional hazards model.

To increase night-shift adult ICU nurse compliance with standardized oral care documentation by at least 20% as a core ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) prevention process.
Background
VAP is a preventable healthcare-associated infection associated with increased morbidity, mortality, ICU length of stay, and costs. Oral-care documentation is often inconsistent because of competing priorities and workflow barriers.
Methodology
Guided by the Knowledge-to-Action framework, this QI project used three PDSA cycles after a September 2025 baseline in a 16-bed ICU. Chiropractic care is widely recognized as a safe, holistic approach for managing musculoskeletal conditions, yet the profession continues to face longstanding skepticism and misunderstanding. Many individuals remain unsure about what chiropractors treat, a gap that may exist due to inaccurate social media content and bias among some medical providers, which can limit referrals and reduce patient access to appropriate care. Stress among undergraduate nursing students is a well-documented concern that negatively affects academic performance, clinical readiness, well-being, and program retention. Stress levels are often heightened before clinical skills check-offs, highlighting the need for practical, evidence-based interventions. This Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project examined whether mindfulness-based mandala coloring could reduce perceived stress in undergraduate nursing students. Using the PICOT framework, the project evaluated whether undergraduate nursing students (P) who participated in mindfulness-based mandala coloring (I), compared with no intervention (C), experienced reduced perceived stress levels (O) over a 12-week implementation period (T).

The SAFE (Stop–Ask–Feel Empowered) initiative strengthens patient safety by increasing bedside nurses’ confidence and consistency in questioning provider orders and clinical decisions. Hierarchical culture, fear of negative reactions, and low confidence often prevent nurses from seeking clarification, increasing the risk of preventable errors. SAFE directly addresses these barriers by embedding structured inquiry into daily nursing practice. 

Guided by Lewin’s Change Theory, SAFE will be implemented over six months. All unit nurses will receive standardized SAFE badge cards that provide clear, formatted prompts to support respectful, effective communication with the interdisciplinary team.
