Tip-Recording From Ixodid Tick Olfactory Sensilla: Responses To Tick Related Odours, S. M. Waladde

The tip-recording technique was used to obtain electrophysiological responses from the tarsal olfactory sensilla, md3 and apl, in ixodid ticks, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum. Stimuli tested were phenolic compounds, 2,6-dichlorophenol, P-cresol, phenol and salicylaldehyde, reported to act as sex pheromone of various ixodid ticks. Certain cells responded to vapours from cartridges charged with as little as 0.04ng of 2,6-dichlorophenol while at least 200 μg of any of the other compounds was required to exert the minimum effect. Response patterns of cells in sexually immature and mature males were similar but response levels were higher among sexually immature males. Vapours …

Contraception and Sterilization

Castration has long been a traditional practice in the United States. Research studies indicate that intact males grow more rapidly, utilize feed more efficiently and produce a higher-yielding carcass with less fat and more edible product. The disadvantages of the intact male include aggressive behavior (bull and boar); undesirable odors and flavors (boar and ram); lower quality grade (bull); lower meat tenderness (bull and ram) and undesirable meat color (bull and ram). Research is needed to develop antemortem and(or) postmortem handling procedures that offset the disadvantages of the intact male so that the meat and livestock industry can take advantage …

The Identification Of Ecdysterone (20-Hydroxyecdysone) In 3 Species Of Molluscs (Gastropoda: Pulmonata), D. L. Whitehead, K. Sellheyer

Ecdysterone has been identified in the schistosomiasis vector Biomphalaria glabrata Say and in Helix aspersa Müller as well as in Lymmaea stagnalis L. by chromatography, bioassay, radioimmunoassay, derivatization and by mass spectroscopy. Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper. © 1982 Birkhäuser Verlag.

Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Black-Pigmented Bacteroides Isolates From The Human Oral Cavity, Linda Jean Laatsch, Paul R. Hohenfeldt, William L. Kos

The minimal inhibitory concentrations of penicillin and six other antibiotics were determined for 66 oral black-pigmented Bacteroides isolates by using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards proposed standard agar dilution technique. These results plus iodometric determination of β-lactamase activity showed that oral isolates of black-pigmented Bacteroides are remaining relatively susceptible to commonly used antibiotics.

This paper describes a resource exchange program between two human service organizations: a public school board and a university. This case study illustrates the utility of the concept of resource exchange as a response to pressures for the effective management of limited human resources. With an emphasis on mutual goals, needs, and strengths, the resource exchange program expanded resources available to both organizations. For the public school board, new services in the form of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention programs were developed. For the university, research and training opportunities were created. A national survey was conducted to determine current opportunities for graduate education in community psychology in Canada. The results show expanded offerings for academic and field work education in community psychology in the past decade. Also, faculty perceptions of the goals, activities, and adequacy of training in community psychology were obtained. Finally, similarities and differences between graduate education in community psychology in Canada and the U.S. are noted. Issues related to the development of community psychology in Canada are discussed.

A study was conducted to evaluate the management and administration of urban Indian health programs by the Urban Program Branch at the Indian Health Service (IHS). In order to do this, an assessment was made of the ability of the Urban Program Office and the IHS Area Offices to successfully carry out their duties and responsibilities to the urban Indian health programs; and the ability of the individual urban Indian health programs to meet their IHS contract and grant obligations.

Taxol Inhibits The Nuclear Movements During Fertilization And Induces Asters In Unfertilized Sea Urchin Eggs, G. Schatten, H. Schatten, T. H. Bestor, R. Balczon

Taxol blocks the migrations of the sperm and egg nuclei in fertilized eggs and induces asters in unfertilized eggs of the sea urchins Lytechinus variegatus and Arbacia punctulata. Video recordings of eggs inseminated in 10 microM taxol demonstrate that sperm incorporation and sperm tail motility are unaffected, that the sperm aster formed is unusually pronounced, and that the migration of the egg nucleus and pronuclear centration are inhibited. The huge monopolar aster persists for at least 6 h; cleavage attempts and nuclear cycles are observed. Meal Interference With Antibiotics Administered Orally In Kentucky Hospitals, Shirley Harper

Hospitals within the State of Kentucky were surveyed to determine if the size of the hospitals influence the frequency of potential meal interference with the administration of oral antibiotics where the "empty stomach" concept must be fulfilled. One hundred and ten hospitals responded to the mailed survey. Of the responding hospitals 103 were short-term and 7 were long-term hospitals. The frequency of conflict was greater for nourishments than with meal interference. Ninety-three and six tenths percent or 103 answered yes when asked if all patients received nourishments on request. The conflicts of potential meal interference ranged from 15 to 40 …

The in vitro mammalian virus inductest is based on the measurement of induced viral gene expression from Simian virus 40 (SV40) transformed weanling Syrian hamster kidney cells (clone E). Upon challenge by many DNA-damaging chemical agents, infectious virions were produced which were quantitated by assay on a cell line permissive to SV40, such as the highly contact inhibited African green monkey kidney cells, CV-1P. Some known carcinogens and non-carcinogens were tested in this research including mitomycin C, aflatoxins Bl and Gl, sterigmatocystin and several polycyclic hydrocarbons.

The Kirby-Bauer test for determining antibiotic effectiveness is widely used in laboratories. The 10 to 20 hour incubation time needed to obtain useful results is a disadvantage of that test. This experimental research was developed to test a modification which could provide useful results in 5 hours.

The modification employed in this experimental technique used an increased inoculum at a 1.0 McFarland standard instead of the customary 0.5 standard. The 2 to 5 hour incubation period in the trypticase soy broth was deleted. The Mueller Hinton plates were incubated for 5 hours and then observed for resistant and/or sensitive patterns. …
