At the beginning of 1978, a group of families were awaiting access to low-cost housing in Mérida, a city on Mexico's southeastern coast. Some units were equipped with a new drainage system called SIRDO (Integrated System for Recycling Organic Wastes), and families interested in living in the experimental block where the SIRDO was to be installed could be given housing right away. Three years later, families in another community located in the crowded Valley of Mexico decided to try the system in their own neighborhood. Investigated the organizing principles in memory for familiar songs in 2 experiments. It was hypothesized that individuals do not store and remember each song in isolation. Rather, there exists a rich system of relationships among tunes that can be revealed through similarity rating studies and memory tasks. One initial assumption was the division of relations among tunes into musical (e.g., tempo, rhythm) and nonmusical similarity. In Exp I, 20 undergraduates were asked to sort 60 familiar tunes into groups according to both musical and nonmusical criteria. Clustering analyses showed clear patterns of nonmusical similarity but few instances of musical similarity. …

Le présent rapport vise à décrire la problématique de l'exposition professionnelle aux vapeurs et gaz anesthésiants en milieu hospitalier québécois.

Ce type d'exposition a été signalé à maintes reprises par différents auteurs et a régulièrement retenu l'attention du personnel impliqué et des médias. Le cri d'alarme lancé récemment par les anesthésistes albertains et repris par la presse illustre cette préoccupation du milieu.

À la demande des départements de santé communautaire, les laboratoires de 'Institut ont évalué les niveaux d'exposition du personnel de trois centres hospitaliers lors d'interventions chirurgicales nécessitant une anesthésie générale. Les hydrocarbures obtenus par la distillation du pétrole constituent un groupe de solvants utilisés fréquemment en milieu de travail (peinture, imprimerie, nettoyage à sec, etc.). Ils peuvent être classés en différentes catégories selon leur hauteur de sortie (ou point d'ébullition) dans les tours à distillation des raffineries. Bien qu'il y ait plusieurs classes d'hydrocarbures, trois classes seulement sont régimentées au Québec: le solvant de caoutchouc, le naphta de fabrication de vernis et de peinture VMP, et le solvant Stoddard. “An 88-year-old male patient was found on his hands and knees on the floor beside his bed. The bedrails were up.”—From an indent report filed by a nurse at the Stillman Infirmary, University Health Services, Harvard University, in May 1980.

Finding elderly patients lying on the floor beside their beds despite the presence of elevated bedrails seems paradoxical: how can a patient fall out of bed when the bedrails are up? Surprisingly, this paradox constitutes one of the leading incidents plaguing hospitals in the United States today. The sixth and final interview with Dr. John Beljan, founding Dean of the Wright State University School of Medicine, begins with a discussion of the challenges faced in integrating the Wright State University School of Medicine into the University community. Dr. Beljan discusses his thoughts on his inter-relationships with Wright State University President Dr. Robert Kegerreis, former Wright State University Provost Dr. Andrew Speigel, and others.

Dr. Beljan also reflects on the past and present development of the School of Medicine and explores possible future goals and areas of development.

This fifth of six interviews with the founding Dean of the Wright State University School of Medicine, Dr. John Beljan, deals with two major areas. The first area is Faculty/Staff recruiting in which Dr. Beljan discusses the methods, priorities, and focuses of the recruiting efforts of the School of Medicine staff. Several key individuals are highlighted.

The second area deals with the development of the Residency Programs inherited and initiated by the Wright State University School of Medicine. Although each program is examined in turn, two distinctly different Residency Programs are highlighted, the Aerospace Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency Programs.

The nature of the LCME, its powers, responsibilities, and focus are examined in detail by Dr. Beljan, as are his thoughts on the nature and function of the LCME in connection to the development of the Wright State School of Medicine.

In this third interview, Dr. Beljan discusses the development of the affiliation agreements between Wright State and the area hospitals. Dr. Beljan also discusses the development of the Joint Coordinating Committees; the positions of Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs, Veteran's Affairs, and Air Force Affairs; the affiliation with the Veterans Administration and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base; the role of the Greene and Montgomery County Medical Societies and the sources of funding for the School of Medicine. The interview closes with a discussion of the mergers of the Cox Heart Laboratory for Cancer Research, with the School of Medicine.

The Effect Of Orally Administered Butylated Hydroxytoluene On Herpes Simplex Keratitis, Donald Carson

Some studies have reported in vitro inactivation of membrane enveloped viruses by Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). This study investigates the effect of orally administered BHT on primary infections of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) using rabbit corneas as the assay system.

Assigned levels of BHT were incorporated into the diet of New Zealand White rabbits with HSV-1 McKrae strain on the corneal surface of the eyes. The degree of infection was measured by a subjective assay. Rabbits receiving BHT in their diet consistently experienced lower levels of infection. The interpretation of this data is that orally administered BHT can be an effective …

Effects Of Biofeedback-Aided Relaxation On The Psychological Stress Symptoms Of College Students, Richard J. Fehring

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Benson's relaxation technique (BRT) with Benson's technique augmented with GSR biofeedback (i.e., biofeedback-aided relaxation, BAR) on the psychological stress symptoms of well college students. Seventy-eight normotensive college students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the BRT group, the BAR group, and a control group. The BRT and BAR students were asked to practice their respective relaxation technique daily for an eight-week period. Pre-and postintervention, all subjects were administered a state-anxiety inventory and a profile-of-mood state (POMS) test. Posttest analysis indicated that the BAR group had significantly lower …

The Effects Of Triethyltin Bromide On Red Cell And Brain Cyclic Amp-Dependent Protein Kinases, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Fumito Taketa

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Triethyltin bromide activates the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases of human red cell membranes and of bovine brain. Additions of 25-500 microM triethyltin to red cell ghosts resulted in enhanced phosphorylation of ghost proteins. When added to partially purified cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases from red cell ghosts or bovine brain, stimulation of the phosphorylation of calf thymus histone was observed. The enhancement of kinase activity was due to release of catalytic subunits from the intact protein kinase. Brief exposure of the partially purified enzymes to triethyltin, followed by DE52 chromatography, resulted in elution profiles for regulatory and catalytic subunits that were …

Identification Of Four Complementary Rna Species In Akabane Virus-Infected Cells, Asit K. Pattnaik, G. Abraham

The analysis of RNA extracted from purified Akabane virus demonstrated the presence of three size classes of single-stranded RNAs with sedimentation coefficients of 31S (large, L), 26S (medium, M), and 13S (small, S). Molecular weights of these RNA species were estimated to be 2.15 x 10⁶,1.5 X 10⁶, and 0.48 x 10⁶ for the L, M, and S RNAs, respectively. Hybridization analysis involving viral genomic RNA and RNA from virus-infected cells resulted in the identification of four virus-specific cRNA species in infected cells. These cRNAs were found to be nonpolyadenylated by their inability to bind …
