Natural And Experimental Infection With An Attaching And Effacing Strain Of Escherichia Coli In Calvest, Rodney A. Moxley, David H. Francis

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Gnotobiotic calves were inoculated with an 05:K4:H-, urease-positive strain of Escherichia coli isolated from a 2-day-old calf with diarrhea. The calves developed elevated temperatures and passed loose mucoid feces, with or without blood. The E. coli strain was negative for heat-stable and heat-labile enterotoxins but produced high levels of Shiga-like toxin. Bacteria attached diffusely to the epithelium of the large intestine and multifocally to the epithelium of the ileum. The duodenum and jejunum were not affected. At the sites of bacterial attachment, microvilli were effaced, enterocytes were degenerate, and necrosis and exfoliation had occurred. These results confirm a …

The Incidence Of Cryptosporidial Infections In Nebraska Dairy Calves, Douglas Lee Varner Jul 1986

The Incidence Of Cryptosporidial Infections In Nebraska Dairy Calves, Douglas Lee Varner

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Within the last decade a new etiologic agent has been identified as a possible cause of diarrhea in humans and domestic animals—that being the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and distribution of Cryptosporidium in the state of Nebraska, to determine if Cryptosporidium occurs more frequently in association with other enteropathogens and to determine about the relation of scouring in the calves to infection with Cryptosporidium. A total of 620 fecal samples from 334 dairy calves from 71 herds in Nebraska were examined for cyptosporidial oocysts using the Sheather’s sugar flotation …

Earl Green Oral History, Earl E. Green

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

This remarkable interview is just what one would expect from the Jackson Lab Director whose conscientious (compulsive?) attention to detail and careful planning are legendary. When I arrived (at 7:50AM), Dr. Green was ready, with his 21+ pages of notes, in outline form, on every aspect of my outline that he wished to discuss. I could tell we were going to have a long interview! In fact, we talked for most of eight hours, although only c. four of those hours are represented on the tapes. What is provided here are the recollections, drawn carefully beforehand from …

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

This three-way interview, between Tibby, Judith Swazey and me, took place in Tibby's home. In the days before this interview, I had interviewed many Jax personnel whose reminiscences had "primed" me for this meeting with one of the most colorful, distinctive and beloved old-time Jax scientists. Tibby has had a remarkable impact on Jax, both in terms of substantial science and also in a human, personal way, as a friend, mentor and colleague to many of the summer students, later to be lab scientists and administrators. Where she could have spoken at length of C.C. Little and …

A Longitudinal Study Of Mesiodistal Crown Diameters In Human Primary And Permanent Dentitions, Randall S. Asher Jun 1986

A Longitudinal Study Of Mesiodistal Crown Diameters In Human Primary And Permanent Dentitions, Randall S. Asher

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Dental practitioners treating children are often faced with the question of when to initiate orthodontic treatment. Preventive and interceptive orthodontics encourage treatment of young patients to guide developing malocclusions into functional and aesthetic harmony. Success in early orthodontic treatment depends on accurate diagnosis. Dimensional growth of the arches anterior to the first permanent molar is essentially complete by the age of eight, years of age. 24 Therefore, two important factors in dentition alignment may be the arch length anterior to the first permanent molars and the mesiodistal crown diameter (MDCD) of the permanent teeth in the arch.

The purpose of …

Confronting The Immunization Problem: Proposals For Compensation Reform, Wendy K. Mariner, Mary E. Clark

Faculty Scholarship

After decades of reports on the need for considered
public policy on immunization,' it is time for action. The
"problem" of immunization is complex, but the constituent complexities have been recognized for years. In a recent report on Vaccine Supply and Innovation, the Institute of Medicine referred to vaccines as "an elegant solution to one of the perennial problems of the human race-infectious
disease." Vaccines are effective, inexpensive, simple to produce, and easy to deliver. They have succeeded in quelling the threat to public health of such formerly devastating diseases as smallpox, poliomyelitis, and diphtheria. Today, however, the prospects for …

Toward A Definition Of Nurse-Managed Centers, Richard J. Fehring, Judeen Schulte, Susan K. Riesch

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to gain consensus on a definition of Nurse-Managed Centers. To accomplish this task, Delphi survey methods were used with the participants of the Second Biennial Conference on Nurse-Managed Centers. Delphi methods entail obtaining autonomous consensus from experts through rounds of questionnaires and feedback of results. A questionnaire was developed that included 22 items obtained from the literature, past conferences, and the expertise of the authors. An additional 6 items were suggested by the conferees. Of the 168 conferees, 148 participated in the first round, 147 in the second, and 133 in the third. Fifty-three …

George Snell Oral History, George D. Snell

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

George Snell's quiet voice and calm demeanor contrasted sharply with the background atmosphere of our taping session: constant interruptions from visitors, the telephone and a very solicitous spouse, and, on top of all this, a lengthy thunderstorm. George remained unperturbed, but he may have been distracted, and this may account for the anecdotal thinness of this tape. Despite his c. 40 years at Jax, Snell provides little here of the colorful vignette. He does recall his early days, living in a tent on the Lab grounds, and the locals' referring to the Lab as the "mouse house;" …

A Survey Of Health Promotion Activities Of Health Systems Agencies, Norma Schira

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The National Health Planning and Resources Development Act. Public Law 93-641, the last major step in the regulation of the health care system, created a network of health system agencies and state level health planning agencies. Subsequent legislation, the Health Planning and Resources Development Amendment 1929, Public Law 96-79, amended 1974 Law and changed the role and function of health systems agencies to include more regulatory activities. By 1981, the activities of Health System Agencies were being curtained by the action of the Reagan administration.

Ectopic Origin Of A Coronary Artery From The Aorta. Sudden Death In 3 Of 23 Patients., John Mahowald, L C. Blieden, J I. Coe, J E. Edwards

Articles

Ectopic origin of a coronary artery from the aorta is uncommon. In the last decade, its importance as a possible cause of sudden death has been documented. Initially, only the left coronary artery was implicated. Lately, the ectopically arising right coronary artery has also been shown to be involved in cases of sudden death. We reviewed the pathologic anatomy in 23 cases of ectopic origin of a coronary artery from the aorta. In three of these cases, death could be attributed to ectopic origin of a coronary artery. In one case the left coronary artery arose from the right aortic …

Prediction Of Methylphenidate (Ritalin) Responsiveness Through Sensory Integrative Testing, Judith Giencke Kimball Apr 1986

Prediction Of Methylphenidate (Ritalin) Responsiveness Through Sensory Integrative Testing, Judith Giencke Kimball

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

Seventeen children previously judged to be good or poor responders to methylphenidate (Ritalin) were tested on sensory integrative measures while in the off-drug state. The tester was unaware of the children's drug response category. Results showed that children who were poor responders to Ritalin showed prolonged scores on and an adverse reaction to the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test and had poorer equilibrium reactions and lower double tactile stimuli scores than the children judged good responders to Ritalin. These findings suggest that it might be possible to identify good and poor responders to Ritalin before the medication is given, something …
