Virginia Woolf's experiences as a manic-depressive influenced her vision of reality and, in tum, her aesthetics. Manic-depression is a "cyclic" illness-cyclic in the sense that the manic-depressive moves alternately between two extreme psychological states. Hence, he experiences reality in terms of two opposite perspectives. Psychotic depression involves what Jung describes as the experience of the "shadow." That is, looking into the unconscious, the individual sees his own reflection. He takes a risk in looking, for as Jung says, "The mirror does not flatter, it faithfully shows whatever looks into it; namely, the face we never show to the world because …

Asbestos And The Dalkon Shield: Corporate America On Trial, Joseph A. Page
Asbestos And The Dalkon Shield: Corporate America On Trial, Joseph A. Page
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Asbestos and the Dalkon Shield intrauterine device share a number of unhappy distinctions. Both products have exacted a terrible human toll. Damage suits seeking recovery for harm linked to both have put considerable strain on the judicial system. Corporate decisions made in the course of marketing both have been deemed reprehensible. Manufacturers of both have sought refuge in bankruptcy. And both have provided the grist for hard-hitting books by veteran investigative journalists.
Paul Brodeur's Outrageous Misconduct: The Asbestos Industry on Trial returns a harsh verdict against the Manville Corporation and others directly and indirectly involved in the production of what …

More than 500 cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AlDS) in children (ages I3 and under) had been reported to the Centers for Disease Control as of August , 1987. Of these children, 78% were infected perinatally by their mothers. The ratio of AIDS cases among women to AIDS cases among ; i children has remained stable at approximately 5:1 for several years. So, for the foreseeable future, we can expect that for every five reports of women with AIDS, one child with AIDS will be reported. As is the CMe with other sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS causes a disproportionately …
Pubertal Status And Psychosocial Development: Findings From The Early Adolescence Study, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen
Pubertal Status And Psychosocial Development: Findings From The Early Adolescence Study, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Beginning in 1978, we have conducted a longitudinal study of early adolescent development. A major objective of this research has been to examine the influence of pubertal changes on other aspects of development during this period. With regard to pubertal effects we wished to address two major questions. First, what aspects of behavior seem to be affected by pubertal development? (In other words, are pubertal effects pervasive or relatively circumscribed, and if they are circumscribed, which aspects of behavior are involved?) Second, how does pubertal change exert an influence--does it operate directly on specific aspects of behavior and performance (for …
The Future Of Public Health Law, Lawrence O. Gostin
The Future Of Public Health Law, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Developments in medicine and constitutional law dictate modification of public health legislation in the United States. Traditionally overlooked by legislators, present public health laws provide inadequate decision-making criteria and inappropriate procedures for dealing with issues. Revised legislation should provide health care officials and agencies with the tools to balance individual rights against public health necessities. This article makes four recommendations for legislative reform: (1) remove artificial legislative distinction between venereal and other communicable diseases; (2) provide criteria defining "public health necessity" to limit discretionary exercise of police power by health officials; (3) provide strong confidentiality protections in the collection and …

Late Fall Transmission Of Nematodirus Battus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) In Western Oregon, Lora G. Rickard, Eric P. Hoberg, Gary L. Zimmerman, Jannell K. Erno
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Studies on Nematodirus battusCrofton and Thomas, 1951, have shown a marked seasonality in the pattern of transmission. The life cycle normally involves only one parasitic generation per year. The infective third-stage larvae develop over the summer within eggs deposited on pasture. Eggs are sensitized by low temperatures during fall and winter; larval hatching follows in the presence of adequate moisture and proper osmotic conditions as the temperature rises above 10°C. This set of conditions, conducive to hatching, is regularly present only during spring; thus, hatching of eggs is concentrated into a few weeks during this time. Outbreaks of clinical …

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson
Karl Reinhard Publications
Examination of coprolites excavated from archaeological sites in the Americas demonstrates excellent preservation of helminth eggs and, in some cases, larvae. To gain an understanding of helminth parasitism in prehistory on the Colorado Plateau of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, 319 coprolites from 5 archaeological sites were analyzed. Helminth eggs and larvae were recovered after the coprolites were rehydrated, screened, and sedimented. At a sixth site, soils excavated from 5 rooms used as latrine areas were processed with palynological techniques. The results indicate that all but 1 of the prehistoric populations examined were infected with intestinal worms. The helminths implicated …

Recent reports of 12 confirmed cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Costa Rica have generated interest in the extent of spread of human T-lymphotropic virus type III/LAV (HTLV-III) in Latin America (1). To date, all cases of AIDS in Costa Rica have occurred in members of previously identified, high-risk groups, chiefly hemophiliacs. To examine the possibility of heterosexual transmission in Costa Rica, we utilized sera collected in a population-based case-control study of cervical cancer, conducted by the Costa Rican Demographic Association and other institution.
