Risk Management In The United States: Three Case Studies Dioxin Emissions And Trash-To-Energy Plants In New York City, R. Steven Konkel
Environmental Health Science Faculty and Staff Research
New York City, the largest US municipality with a population of 12 million, presently generates 28,000 tons of garbage per day. Its main disposal facility Fresh Kills-is expected to be the only one of four presently operating landfills still in in use in 1987, and to be filled to capacity be 2001. Institutional, economic, and environmental obstacles severely restrict landfill options within the city, and ocean disposal of municipal solid waste is not considered feasible. In short, continued reliance on landfills to absorb the City's enormous volume of municipal waste is no longer considered viable.

Depression In College Students: Construct Validity Of The Student Experience Inventory, Angela Kramp
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Research suggests that the population of undergraduate college students may be especially prone to depression. While the prevalence of depression within the general population ranges from 3 to 9 percent (Boyd & Weissman, 1981), it has been shown that between 15 and 46 percent of undergraduate college students suffer the symptoms of mild to severe depression (Beck & Young, 1978; Oliver & Burkham, 1979). Although depression is prevalent among college students, there are no known instruments yielding indices of depression specific to the college population. In fact, depression measures frequently employed in college settings seldom recognize the unique features of …

Molecular Cloning Of Human Synovial Cell Collagenase And Selection Of A Single Gene From Genomic Dna., Constance E. Brinckerhoff, Peggy L. Ruby, Scott D. Austin, M Elizabeth Fini, Hillary D. White
Dartmouth Scholarship
We used a subclone of a rabbit genomic clone for collagenase that cross-hybridizes with human synovial cell messenger RNA (mRNA) to identify a human collagenase complementary DNA (cDNA) clone. The human cDNA clone is 2.1 kilobases (kb) and selects a mRNA transcript of approximately the same size from primary cultures of rheumatoid synovial cells that produce collagenase, but no mRNA is selected from control (nonproducing) synovial fibroblasts. Restriction enzyme analysis and DNA sequence data indicate that our cDNA clone is full length and that it is identical to that recently described for human skin fibroblast collagenase. The cDNA clone identified …

Examination of harpacticoid copepod morphology was conducted to determine whether morphological resemblance provides a reasonable index of habltat utilization and movement. Discriminant analysis was used to explore the relationship between body form and habitat utilization for copepod species collected from 3 subhabitats within seagrass beds in Tampa Bay, Florida. To examine the accuracy of our procedure the discriminant function derived for Tarnpa Bay copepods was applied to copepods collected in worldwide studies. Three morphological characteristics - ratio of the length of Pereopod 1 first endopod segment to the remaining endopod segments, area of the cephalosome, and length of the first …

Thermal regulation and peripheral arousal in episodes of emotion are dependent upon similar autonomic and hormonal processes. Thermal-tolerance measure were developed and validated in order to indirectly assess adrenergic (cold tolerance) and cholinergic (heat tolerance) responsivity. We hypothesized that cold tolerance would correlate with reduced emotionality (largely fear and anxiety) and depression, and with increased stimulus seeking and dispositions toward activity; those hypotheses were confirmed. Tentatively advanced hypotheses that heat tolerance would correlate with reduced depression and emotional states were not confirmed, but heat tolerance was positively associated with activity and (weakly) with some of the same dimensions of temperament …

Ethnicity And Lifetimes: Self Concepts And Situational Contexts Of Ethnic Identity In Late Life, Mark Luborsky, Robert L. Rubinstein
Anthropology Faculty Research Publications
This chapter reports on finding from a study of ethnic older men, aged 65 an older (Jewish, Irish, and Italian) who were widowed from 2 to 8 years after a long-term study. It focuses on life reorganization after the initial bereavement period. It identifies key issues in the process concerning continuity and change in identity reformulation, changes in health and activity patterns, ethnic identity and lingering attachment to the deceased spouse. Ethnicity as a dynamic life course process, shaped by contextual and historical dimensions, and personal meaning processes are highlighted. Supported by NIH# R01-AG005204

Abstract
One hundred ninety-four patients with cryptococcal meningitis were enrolled in a multicenter, prospective, randomized clinical trial to compare the efficacy and toxicity of four as compared with six weeks of combination amphotericin B and flucytosine therapy. Among 91 patients who met preestablished criteria for randomization, cure or improvement was noted in 75 percent of those treated for four weeks and in 85 percent of those treated for six weeks. The estimated relapse rate for the four-week regimen was higher — 27 as compared with 16 percent — whereas the incidence of toxic effects for the two regimens was similar …

Abstract
Better methods are needed to assess mastcell activation In vivo and to distinguish the activation of mast cells from that of basophils. Tryptase, a neutral protease selectively concentrated in the secretory granules of human mast cells (but not basophils), is released by mast cells together with histamine and serves as a marker of mast-cell activation.
In 17 patients with systemic mastocytosis, concentrations of tryptase in plasma were linearly related to those of histamine (P<0.01). Eleven of the 17 patients had tryptase levels of 4 to 88 ng per milliliter, indicating ongoing mast-cell activation. In each of six patients who experienced corresponding anaphylactic reactions after penicillin, aspirin, or melon ingestion, a wasp sting, exercise, or antilymphocyte globulin injection, tryptase levels in serum ranged from 9 to 75 ng per milliliter, indicating mast-cell activation during each of these events. In contrast, serum tryptase levels were less than 5 ng per milliliter in all patients presenting with myocardial disease (n = 8, 6 with hypotension) or sepsis (n = 6, 3 with hypotension) and in the controls (n = 20). One patient had a myocardial infarction after anaphylaxis in response to a wasp sting and an elevated tryptase level of 25 ng per milliliter. Thus, the plasma or serum tryptase level is a diagnostic correlate of mast-cell-related events. (N Engl J Med 1987; 316: 1622–6.)

The physiologic response to traumatic injury may alter the disposition of drugs and thereby affect their therapeutic or toxic potential. A study was conducted in 10 mongrel dogs to determine theeffect of experimental hemorrhagic shock with resuscitation on the pharmacokinetics of gentamicinand cefazolin. Single simultaneous intravenous doses of gentamicin (3 mg/kg) and cefazolin (25 mg/kg) were administered to each animal on an initial study day, after which serial blood and urine collections were performed. After 1 week, a standard hemorrhagic shock model was applied to each animal. Shock was continued for 1 h, after which the animal was resuscitated with …

The simplex and common-factor models of drug use were compared using maximum-likelihood estimation of latent variable structural models in two samples: a sample of 226 high school students, using ratio-scale measures of current drug use, and a sample of 310 industrial workers and 811 college students, using ordinal-scale measures of current drug use. Latent variables of alcohol, marijuana, enhancer hard drugs, and dampener hard drugs were specified in a series of structural models. Contrary to previous findings with cumulative drug-use data, the common-factor model provided a more acceptable representation of the observed current-use data than did the simplex model in …
