Dietary And Parasitological Analysis Of Coprolites Recovered From Mummy 5, Ventana Cave, Arizona, Karl Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly

Karl Reinhard Publications

Four coprolites were excavated with Burial 5 at Ventana Cave. a partially mummified five-year-old child. Two coprolites were granular and dark in color and two were fibrous and light in color. The coprolites are remains of the child's intestinal contents and were submitted for dietary and parasitological analysis. No parasites were found. The fibrous coprolites proved to be remains of highly masticated mesquite pods (Prosopis). The granular coprolites consist of seeds of saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Pollen analysis reveals two dietary pollen types, both derived from cactus. No evidence of cultivated plants except for a trace amount of …

Introduction Of Psychology And Aging: Nebraska Symposium On Motivation 1991, Theo Sonderegger Jan 1991

Introduction Of Psychology And Aging: Nebraska Symposium On Motivation 1991, Theo Sonderegger

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Through the years, the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has reflected topics of current interest to psychologists. This year is no exception: "psychology and aging" is a subject of concern to all readers no matter what their particular psychological specialties happen to be. All of us-if we are lucky, hope that we will experience the aging process and will join (or continue our membership in) the ever increasing population of the elderly. The quantity of research in the area is growing rapidly; new ideas and theories about the aging process are far from complete and are still emerging-as will be seen …

Trait Psychology Comes Of Age, Paul T. Costa Jr., Robert Mccrae Jan 1991

Trait Psychology Comes Of Age, Paul T. Costa Jr., Robert Mccrae

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

It is sometimes thought that the relation between research on aging and the basic sciences is one-sided: gerontologists take the methods and theories of their specialty and apply them to aging populations, but they rarely initiate theories or report findings that could reshape the basic disciplines themselves. Whatever the truth of this perception in general, it is completely false with regard to the psychology of personality. When Eichorn, Clausen, Haan, Honzik, and Mussen (1981) published their summary of the Berkeley longitudinal studies, Sears and Sears (1982) heralded it as "probably the most important unified research contribution to adult social and …

Ethical Principles For The Conduct Of Human Subject Research: Population-Based Research And Ethics, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1991

Ethical Principles For The Conduct Of Human Subject Research: Population-Based Research And Ethics, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper provides a halting first step in organizing a set of ethical guidelines for the conduct of population-based research, surveillance and practice. These principles are not distinct from, but an expansion of, traditional ethics. Research ethics, which matured significantly from the Nuremberg Code through to the Helsinki IV and the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) guidelines, nourished the individual human spirit. Ethical principles should have a similarly profound impact in the development of science and the protection of human populations in the 1990s and beyond.

Health And Safety Practices In Three Art Classrooms, George Wade Killian Jan 1991

Health And Safety Practices In Three Art Classrooms, George Wade Killian

Graduate Research Papers

Each day art teachers and their students use clay, glazes. paints, solvents, aerosols, and adhesives that may be slowly poisoning their bodies. In most cases there are safe art material substitutes or alternative working methods which may be used. Unfortunately, many art teachers and their students still may not be fully aware of the dangers posed by a variety of hazardous materials and processes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of teacher concern about health and safety in the classroom.

Infection Rates In Glossina Morsitans Morsitans Fed On Waterbuck And Boran Cattle Infected With Trypanosoma Congolense, Steve Mihok, Reardon O. Olubayo, David F. Wesonga Jan 1991

Infection Rates In Glossina Morsitans Morsitans Fed On Waterbuck And Boran Cattle Infected With Trypanosoma Congolense, Steve Mihok, Reardon O. Olubayo, David F. Wesonga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Teneral Glossina morsitans morsitans were fed on waterbuck (Kobus defassa) and Boran cattle (Bos indicus) infected experimentally with Trypanosoma congolense clone IL2895. Infection rates in tsetse varied from 9 to 31% when fed on cattle, and from 2 to 59% when fed on waterbuck. In waterbuck, infections were often detected through the development of parasites in tsetse at times when parasitaemia could not be detected through microscopic examination of blood. Male and female, and 1- and 2-day-old flies were equally susceptible to infection on both hosts. Infection in tsetse was associated with a 14% absolute reduction in survival during the …

Pathogenicity Of Tsetse-Transmitted Trypanosoma Congolense For Waterbuck (Kobus Defassa) And Boran Cattle (Bos Indicus), R. O. Olubayo, S. Mihok, D. F. Wesonga, E. R.M. Mbwabi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Five waterbuck (Kobus defassa) and four Boran cattle (Bos indicus) were infected with Trypanosoma congolense IL2895 using Glossina morsitans morsitans. At the same time, two waterbuck and two cattle were inoculated intravenously with bloodstream forms. With both methods of challenge, cattle had short prepatent periods followed by a continuous high parasitaemia. All cattle became severely anaemic and had to be treated with trypanocidal drugs to prevent death. In contrast, tsetse and intravenous challenge of waterbuck resulted in a long prepatent period, followed by brief, intermittent levels of low parasitaemia, and eventual selfcure. Waterbuck did not become anaemic, even during short …

Monocytes And Polymorphonuclear Neutrophils Of Patients With Streptococcal Pharyngitis Express Increased Numbers Of Type I Igg Fc Receptors., Paul M. Guyre, A Scott Campbell, Wayne D. Kniffin, Michael W. Fanger

Dartmouth Scholarship

Studies using cultured cells have shown that gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) induces the expression of Fc gamma RI (the type I Fc receptor for IgG) on human polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and greatly increases the number of these receptors on human monocytes. Administration of rIFN-gamma in vivo also causes enhanced Fc gamma RI expression on these cell populations. Because streptococcal antigens are potent inducers of IFN-gamma in vitro, we postulated that IFN-gamma would be produced endogenously in vivo in patients with streptococcal infections. Such production of IFN-gamma in vivo, even at low levels, might be expected to induce the expression of Fc …

Malignant External Otitis And Mastoiditis Associated With An Igg4 Subclass Deficiency In A Child., Ricardo Castro, Md, Norman Robinson, Md, Joel Klein, Md, William Geimeier, Md

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

We have presented the first child in Delaware with malignant external otitis associated with IgG4 deficiency. Our patient needed three courses of intravenous antibiotics and twice required mastoidectomy, but has recovered completely following the restoration of the natural barrier between the internal and external ear, using a fascial graft from the large temporalis muscle. Some hearing deficit remains.

Aids: Implications To Society And Approaches To Control, Robert W. Sidwell

Faculty Honor Lectures

It is perhaps a measure of today's society that a new disease of potentially world-wide implication does not gain national or international attention until a famous person contracts it. This was particularly seen with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) when it became known that Rock Hudson of movie and TV acclaim was dying of it. By the time the celebrated pianist and entertainer Liberace died of AIDS, the various public health agencies around the world had begun to focus on the problem, and enormous sums of money were being committed toward its control. Today, more U.s. dollars are budgeted for AIDS …

National Eldercare System Project: A National Study Comparing Successful Community-Based Systems Of Care For Older People, Richard H. Fortinsky, David Karraker, Suzanne K. Hart, David Lambert Phd, Paula Hollis, Mary Colombo, Terrie Wetle Phd

Disability & Aging

The purpose of this project was to compare three different models of building and strengthening community-based systems of care for older adults. Models were distinguished by the type of organization that took the lead in developing the system of services: Area Agency on Aging, acute care hospital, and residential facility. Specific questions addressed in this project were: (1) What conditions in a local community give rise to a community-based system of care (CBSC) for older adults? (2) What are the necessary steps in planning and designing CBSCs? (3) How are successful CBSCs established and maintained? (4) How does the type …
