The Exclusion Of Pregnant, Pregnable, And Once-Pregnable People (A.K.A. Women) From Biomedical Research, Vanessa Merton Jan 1993

The Exclusion Of Pregnant, Pregnable, And Once-Pregnable People (A.K.A. Women) From Biomedical Research, Vanessa Merton

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The barriers to women's participation as subjects in biomedical research are currently being challenged as a matter of legislative policy, medicine, and law. This Article catalogs the ways in which women have been disadvantaged by their exclusion and recent developments to redress them, and goes on to dissect the underlying rationales for excluding women from clinical trials. The author reveals the 'fundamental misconception' behind exclusionary rationales, and argues that research sponsors in fact have more to fear in the way of potential liability from the exclusion of women, even pregnant women and women of child-bearing capacity, than from their inclusion. …

Anionic Liposomes Inhibit Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (Hiv-1) Infectivity In Cd4+ A3.01 And H9 Cells, Krystyna Konopka, B. R. Davis, C. E. Larsen, Nejat Düzgüneş Jan 1993

Anionic Liposomes Inhibit Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (Hiv-1) Infectivity In Cd4+ A3.01 And H9 Cells, Krystyna Konopka, B. R. Davis, C. E. Larsen, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Immunodeficiency viruses undergo fusion with liposomes containing anionic phospholipids (Larsen et al., 1990). We have investigated the effect of liposomes composed of cardiolipin, phosphatidylserine or phosphatidylinositol, on the infectivity of three strains of HIV-1 in A3.01 and H9 cells, measured by p24 (gag) production in the medium. The infectivity of HIV-1 in A3.01 or H9 cells was inhibited by the presence of cardiolipin liposomes during a 2 h infection period, with IC50's of 23.0, 4.8, and 5.0 μM phospholipid, respectively, for the different strains. Liposomes composed of phosphatidylserine or phosphatidylinositol were ineffective under similar conditions. However, prolonged pre-incubation of the …

Oral Contraceptives And Reproductive Cancers: Weighing The Risks And Benefits, Ann L. Coker, Susan Harlap, Judith A. Fortney

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

The hypothetical incidence of reproductive cancers resulting from oral contraceptive use was estimated in several models comparing the cumulative lifetime incidence of cancer of the breast, cervix, ovary and endometrium expected in pill users with the incidence expected in nonusers. The potential number of cancer-free days that would be gained or lost by pill users was com- pared with similar estimates among nonusers. If five years or more of pill use were associated with a 20% increase in the risk of breast cancerbeing diagnosed before age 50, a 20% increase in cervical cancer risk and a 50% reduction in the …

Dartmouth Scholarship

The immunologic consequences of prolonged infusions of rIL-2 in doses that produce physiologic serum concentrations of this cytokine were investigated. rIL-2 in doses of 0.5-6.0 x 10(6) U/m2 per d (3.3-40 micrograms/m2 per d) was administered by continuous intravenous infusion for 90 consecutive days to patients with advanced cancer. IL-2 concentrations (25 +/- 25 and 77 +/- 64 pM, respectively) that selectively saturate high-affinity IL-2 receptors (IL-2R) were achieved in the serum of patients receiving rIL-2 infusions of 10 micrograms/m2 per d and 30 micrograms/m2 per d. A gradual, progressive expansion of natural killer (NK) cells was seen in the …

Factors Affecting Communication Between Emergency Department Nurses, Malynnda Wright Jan 1993

Factors Affecting Communication Between Emergency Department Nurses, Malynnda Wright

Honors Projects

Communication of essential patient data is vital to provide effective immediate intervention in an emergency department or trauma center. The information must be complete and conveyed in a clear concise manner as quickly as possible. Without effective communication, valuable time can be wasted performing repetitious assessments, instead of conducting procedures that can save lives and reduce the length of the patient's stay.

Monitoring Of Fungal Spores In An Experimental Indoor Environment To Evaluate Sampling Methods And The Effects Of Human Activity On Air Sampling, Mark P. Buttner, Linda Stetzenbach Jan 1993

Monitoring Of Fungal Spores In An Experimental Indoor Environment To Evaluate Sampling Methods And The Effects Of Human Activity On Air Sampling, Mark P. Buttner, Linda Stetzenbach

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Aerobiological monitoring was conducted in an experimental room to aid in the development of standardized sampling protocols for airborne microorganisms in the indoor environment. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the relative efficiencies of selected sampling methods for the retrieval of airborne fungal spores and to determine the effect of human activity on air sampling. Dry aerosols containing known concentrations of Penicillium chrysogenum spores were generated, and air samples were taken by using Andersen six-stage, Surface Air System, Burkard, and depositional samplers. The Andersen and Burkard samplers retrieved the highest numbers of spores compared with the measurement standard, …

Gente Joven/Young People: A Dialogue On Sexuality With Adolescents In Mexico, Magaly Marques, John M. Paxman, Judith Bruce

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité describes the experience of one adolescent sexuality program, Gente Joven in Mexico. Gente Joven began by acknowledging reality: that the problems related to teenage sexuality will not go away simply by denying their existence. Along the way Gente Joven learned, and is continuing to learn, many lessons about how to build a successful program for adolescents. Here they share their experiences and the Afterword explores in greater depth one particular issue that Gente Joven has identified as its next major challenge: re-examining their work with young people from a gender perspective.

Authoritarianism And Attitudes Toward Contemporary Social Issues In The 1990s, Bill E. Peterson, Richard M. Doty, David G. Winter Jan 1993

Authoritarianism And Attitudes Toward Contemporary Social Issues In The 1990s, Bill E. Peterson, Richard M. Doty, David G. Winter

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Three studies were conducted to examine the relevance of authoritarianism to contemporary social attitudes, with special emphasis on AIDS, drug use, and the environment. In Studies 1 and 2, students scoring higher on authoritarianism (measured by Byrne's balanced F scale and Altemeyer's Right-Wing Authoritarianism Scale, respectively) were more likely to endorse harsh, punitive sentiments and solutions to the problems of AIDS and drugs and less likely to endorse more egalitarian ones. These two issues are presumed to represent a threat to the "American way of life" and provide clear out-groups for authoritarian aggression. Regarding the environment, authoritarians express hostility toward …
