Extending Continuous Versus Discontinuous Conditioned Stimuli Before Versus After Unconditioned Stimuli, Melody Albert, Sean Ricker, Rick A. Bevins, John J.B. Ayres
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Conditioned suppression was used with rats to study the effects of extending conditioned stimuli (CSs) before versus after the delivery of unconditioned stimuli. These extensions are termed B and A extensions, respectively. Within-group designs were used to compare the effects of extending CSs when 2-min parts of those CSs were separated by temporal gaps of 6 min versus a separation of no gap. The results were as follows: (a) B extensions weakened conditioning more than did A extensions, with or without gaps; (b) under some conditions, this asymmetrical effect persisted with extended training; (c) gaps between 2-min parts of a …

After Hiv Testing: What's Next?, J.L. O'Quinn, Polly A. Hulme
College of Nursing Faculty Publications
Nurses and other health care providers involved in HIV testing are required to provide pre- and post-test counseling in accordance with guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC, 1992). Clients who test positive are extensively counseled and educated on the nature of the virus, its modes of transmission, the need to practice "safer sex," and the obligation to advise sexual (and needle) partners (Preston, 1989). Some individuals do not inform their partners and this presents an urgent dilemma: Is a nurse bound by a client's right to privacy not to advise that client's partner of his or her HIV …

Refusal Assertion Versus Conversational Skill Role-Play Competence: Relevance To Prevention Of Tobacco Use, Steve Sussman, Alan W. Stacy, Clyde W. Dent, Catherine Burciaga, Dee Burton, Brian R. Flay
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Conversational and refusal assertion skills of 768 seventh grade youth were assessed through ratings of global (for example, effectiveness) and non-verbal (for example, eye contact) behaviour performed in two role-play scenarios. The ratings were completed after each scenario by the subjects themselves, as well as by classmate and trained adult observers. Use of the Hays and Hayashi multitrait scaling method to interpret these data revealed two results. First, the items used to measure role-play behaviour did not achieve sufficient internal consistency to create global and non-verbal composites. Second, inter-rater agreement and discriminant validity were obtained only for ratings of the …

Descriptive Enlargement Of Intracranial Aneurysms To A Critical Thickness For Rupture, G. Austin, X. Gong, Z. Suo
The Dr. George M. Austin Neurology Research Collection
''lntracranial Aneurysm: A model of expansion to critical thinning," Poster Presentation Annual Meeting of Biophysical Society, Wash., D.C., 1993, 9 p.
Most intracranial aneurysms (IA) are thinner at the apex; and 84% rupture at the apex. (Weir, 1987, Crompton, 1966). Minimum thickness of an unruptured aneurysm is reported 20 microns (Suzuki, et al 1980). We have developed a computer model of aneurysm enlargement starting from a vascular wall using the membrane elasticity equations of Green and Adkins, 1960 and Bogen & McMahon, 1978, and a computer solution with a new Fortran program by X. Gong. The relatively homogeneous wall (Austin, …

A Model To Promote Activity Competence In Elders., Ruth E. Levine, Laura N. Gitlin
Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers
This paper describes an occupational therapy home-based intervention in which purposeful activities were used to promote adaptation and competence in older adults with chronic disabilities. Seven home care therapists visited 17 randomly selected, community-living elders who were chronically disabled and who volunteered to participate in the program. The number of visits ranged from 3 to 10 and occurred over a 3-month period according to clients' needs and wishes. Therapists enhanced their ability to enter the client's social and cultural system by using participant-observation techniques and collaboratively identified activities. Therapists documented each home visit with a structured fieldnote form. An analysis …

Long-Term Consequences Of Childhood Physical Abuse, Robin Malinosky-Rummell, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This article reviews the literature on the long-term consequences of childhood physical abuse. Empirical research is discussed within 7 topic areas: aggressive and violent behavior, nonviolent criminal behavior, substance abuse, self-injurious and suicidal behavior, emotional problems, interpersonal problems, and academic and vocational difficulties. The studies reviewed involve primarily adult populations, although pertinent findings from literature on children and adolescents are briefly summarized. Some variables that affect the relation between physical abuse and long-term consequences are examined. These moderator variables include maltreatment characteristics, individual factors, family factors, and environmental factors. The article ends with suggestions for future research on long-term consequences …

Facilitation Of Penicillin Haptenation To Serum Proteins., Joseph T. Dipiro, N. Franklin Adkinson Jr., Robert G. Hamilton
Facilitation Of Penicillin Haptenation To Serum Proteins., Joseph T. Dipiro, N. Franklin Adkinson Jr., Robert G. Hamilton
Publications from the Office of the Dean
Traditionally, penicillin binding to serum proteins was believed to be a passive chemical process; however, it appears to be facilitated by serum factors. The objectives of this in vitro investigation were to examine facilitated penicillin haptenation, to study the kinetics of haptenation, and to determine the nature of haptenation-facilitating factors. The model involved addition of [3H]benzylpenicillin to serum or albumin solutions (at pH 7.3 to 7.4) and incubation at 37 degrees C for up to 72 h. The extent of penicillin binding to proteins in serum was found to be four- to fivefold higher than with solutions having comparable concentrations …

In Vitro Protein Binding Of Cefonicid And Cefuroxime In Adult And Neonatal Sera., John M. Benson, F. Douglas Boudinot, Andrew T. Pennell, Francesca E. Cunningham, Joseph T. Dipiro
Publications from the Office of the Dean
The levels of in vitro protein binding of cefonicid and cefuroxime in human adult and neonatal sera were compared.Binding parameters for each drug were determined within the concentration range of 25 to 3,000 micrograms/ml.Cefonicid exhibited concentration-dependent protein binding in both types of sera, with more extensive binding in adultserum at all concentrations. Two classes of binding sites were found: a high-affinity, saturable site and a low-affinity, nonspecific site. Cefuroxime also showed two-class, concentration-dependent protein binding in adult serum, but bindingin neonatal serum was to a single class and was independent of drug concentration. Parameters for class 1 binding sites for …

The Early Months Of Stuttering: A Developmental Study, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi, Nicoline Ambrose
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Objective data on the development of stuttering during its first several months are sparse. Such a deficit is due to parents' tendency to postpone professional consultation regarding early stuttering until later in the course of the disorder and to a lack of longitudinal studies beginning close to onset. This report presents information on a rare group of 16 preschool subjects who were evaluated within several weeks after stuttering onset and followed for 6 months using multiple measures. The findings show that often early stuttering takes on a moderate-to-severe form. Substantial changes occurred, however, during the 6 months of the study, …

Effect Of Protein Kinase C Inhibitors And Activators On Corneal Re-Epithelialization In The Rat, A. Hirakata, A. G. Gupta, A. D. Proia
Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of
PURPOSE: To examine the ability of protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors and activators to influence the rate of corneal re-epithelialization in the rat. METHOD: Rat corneas with 3 mm diameter central epithelial abrasions were organ-cultured in control medium or in medium with inhibitors or activators of PKC. RESULTS: In control corneas, the defect was completely re-epithelialized by 25 hr. In the presence of the PKC inhibitors staurosporine (100 nM), sphinganine (50 mumol/l), or H-7 (100 mumol/l) there were significantly larger epithelial defects than in controls after 5-25 hr of incubation. Re-epithelialization rates were similar to control corneas when the incubation …

Identification Of Which High Risk Youth Smoke Cigarettes Regularly, Alan W. Stacy, Steve Sussman, Clyde W. Dent, Thomas R. Simon, Dee Burton, Brian R. Flay
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
This study investigated which variables distinguish high school-aged adolescents who identify themselves as members of a high-risk group and, among them, those who report regular (weekly) vs. light levels of cigarette smoking. Youth who identified with a high-risk group were most likely to report problem-prone characteristics, such as a preference to take risks and smoke cigarettes. Yet, only half of them reported regular levels of smoking. Two variables delineated light smoking among these youth: not having a close friend who smoked and placing an importance on health as a value. Development of new tobacco-use prevention strategies to impart health values …
