Diagnosis Of Genetic Defects By Chromosomal Analysis, Farooq Ghani, Siddiqua Maniac, Zahida Khilji, Mohammad Azim, Mohammad Khurshid
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Of 901 karyotypes performed over a period of 4 years, genetic anomalies were detected in 162 cases. Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21) was the most common (168.8%) genetic disorder followed by Turner’s syndrome, Philadelphia chromosome, Klinefelter's syndrome, Edward’s syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau’s syndrome (trisomy 13). All the three trisomies were detected very early in life. Mean age at the time of diagnosis for Turner’s syndrome was 13.3 years, allowing a timely hormone replacement therapy to improve secondary sexual characters. Patients with Klinefelter's syndrome were diagnosed late (mean age 23.6 years), which greatly reduced their chances of an effective therapy to …
Seroprevalence Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Domestic Animals In Pakistan, M Zaki
Seroprevalence Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Domestic Animals In Pakistan, M Zaki
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
The seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infections among food animals in South-West Pakistan was measured by serological examination using a commercial latex agglutination test (LAT). In all 262 blood samples, from 100 cattle, 40 sheep, 58 goats and 64 chickens, were collected from the city abattoir. Titers considered diagnostically significant (> or = 1:64) were detected in 25% of cattle and 2.5% of sheep. None of the goats and chickens presented seropositivity for anti-toxoplasma antibodies. The study suggests the need for further investigations to determine the impact of these findings on the human population.

An oil extracted from the leaves of a tropical shrub Ocimum suave was found to repel as well as kill all stages of the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. In an in vitro bioassay for the larvae, the LC50 of the oil in liquid paraffin was 0.024%. A 10% solution was found to kill all immatures and more than 70% of adults feeding on rabbits. Rabbits were protected for 5 days against attaching larvae using a 10% solution. Preliminary experiments undertaken with cattle kept in the field suggest that the oil may have potential in tick control, and a role in integrated …

An apparatus for artificial feeding of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus nymphae was modified to improve feeding performance. Heparinized blood was supplied above a treated artificial membrane while the ticks attached below on its undersurface. The feeding apparatus was incubated at 37 °C in an atmosphere of 3% CO2 concentration and a relative humidity of 75–80 °0. Under these conditions, 91 °0 of the engorged nymphae attained a mean weight of 6–11 mg, and an average of 93 °0 of those nymphae moulted into adults. When this system was used to feed nymphal ticks on blood infected with Theileria parva piroplasms, the mean …

Stability And Resolution In Thermal Imaging, Lester Caudill, Kurt Bryan
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
This paper examines an inverse problem which arises in thermal imaging. We investigate the problem of detecting and imaging corrosion in a material sample by applying a heat flux and measuring the induced temperature on the sample's exterior boundary. The goal is to identify the profile of some inaccessible portion of the boundary. We study the case in which one has data at every point on the boundary of the region, as well as the case in which only finitely many measurements are available. An inversion procedure is developed and used to study the stability of the inverse problem for …

Unchanged Maladies: Current Perspectives On Old Testament Diseases, Catherine A. Marco
Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications
As a physician reading the Old Testament this year, I often find myself speculating about some of the medical conditions referred to in the Old Testament. Although many disease entities have surely changed significantly over the past several thousand years, the human anatomy remains basically unchanged, thus rendering man susceptible to the same categories of disease in any day and age.

Summary: As part of ongoing research to investigate and document the efficacy of intensive voice therapy to improve functional communication in patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease, 45 patients were enrolled in a controlled, randomized, prospective study. Pre- to posttreatment comparisons are presented here on 22 of those patients who underwent laryngeal imaging examination. Of the 22 patients, 13 patients received intensive therapy aimed at increasing vocal and respiratory effort (VR), whereas nine received intensive therapy aimed at increasing respiratory effort (R) only. All patients had a pretreatment evaluation that included two (but sometimes only one) voice recordings and an otolaryngologic …

The Gtp-Bound Form Of The Yeast Ran/Tc4 Homologue Blocks Nuclear Protein Import And Appearance Of Poly(A)+ Rna In The Cytoplasm., Gabriel Schlenstedt, Claudio Saavedra, Jonathan D. Loeb, Charles N. Cole, Pamela A. Silver
Dartmouth Scholarship
Ran/TC4, a Ras-like GTP-binding protein, and its nucleotide exchanger, RCC1, have been implicated in control of protein movement into the nucleus and cytoplasmic accumulation of mRNA. Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains two homologues of the mammalian Ran/TC4, encoded by the GSP1 and GSP2 genes. We have constructed yeast strains that overproduce either wild-type Gsp1 or a form of Gsp1 with glycine-21 converted to valine (Gsp1-G21V), which we show stabilizes the GTP-bound form. Cells producing Gsp1-G21V have defects in localization of nuclear proteins; nuclear proteins accumulate in the cytoplasm following galactose induction of Gsp1-G21V. Similarly, cells producing Gsp1-G21V retain poly(A)+ RNA in their …

Caring Communication: Strategies And Skills For Health Professionals, Tony Hussey, Michael Finn, Yvonne Hauck
Research outputs pre 2011
Over the last 15 years, the teaching of professional interpersonal communication skills has become well established within the curriculum for most health professionals. Recognition is thereby given to the significance of interpersonal communication skills in professional practice. One of the challenges in teaching and learning in this area of skill is the recognition and analysis of examples of both good and bad practice. This package provides a number of such examples.
The package consists of 33 vignettes in health care settings. These vignettes variously depict skills or groups of skills, illustrate negative and dysfunctional communication behaviours and, through the print …

Doing More With Less: The Marie Stopes Clinics In Sierra Leone, Nahid Toubia, Grace Ebun Delano
Doing More With Less: The Marie Stopes Clinics In Sierra Leone, Nahid Toubia, Grace Ebun Delano
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité reports on the Marie Stopes Sierra Leone (MSSL) organization which pursues its goals with compassion and ambition, despite seemingly insurmountable economic hardships. MSSL has established a service model that many programs in richer countries should try to imitate. Several particularly important lessons emerged, including: creative, skillful management, well-organized and flexible financial administration, and human motivation and perseverance can enable an organization to overcome financial difficulties; family planning is an integral part of people's reproductive and general health concerns and can dovetail with concern for development in useful and practical ways; men appreciate being involved in the …

The Coletivo: A Feminist Sexuality And Health Collective In Brazil, Margarita Diaz, Debbie Rogow, Jose Barzelatto
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité tells the story of a group of Brazilian women who came together in 1981 with the shared belief—not as widely understood then as it is now—that conventional approaches to women's health and family planning services were overly medicalized, incapable of dealing with the relationship between sexuality and contraception, and disempowering to clients. They started the Coletivo which runs a clinic, a training institute, and a public education program that has “given voice” to thousands of women, provided leadership to the Brazilian government and women’s health movement, and has been active in research and international policy affairs. …
Tuberculosis And The Power Of The State: Toward The Development Of Rational Standards For The Review Of Compulsory Public Health Powers, Lawrence O. Gostin
Tuberculosis And The Power Of The State: Toward The Development Of Rational Standards For The Review Of Compulsory Public Health Powers, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article uses tuberculosis as the paradigm for exploring rational standards for the exercise of compulsory public health powers. Extant doctrine in disability and constitutional law provides a lens for examining judicial review of state interventions. The author first sets out the central epidemiological and biological aspects of tuberculosis to demonstrate the strength of the governmental interest in curtailing the epidemic. Second, he examines the interventions of testing, screening, and confinement of persons with tuberculosis, where he focuses on two congregate settings--correctional and health care facilities--that present substantial health risks and are principal foci for the exercise of state intervention. …

What We Do And Do Not Know About The Menstrual Cycle Or, Questions Scientists Could Be Asking, Sioban D. Harlow, Sara A. Ephross
Reproductive Health
The objective of this paper is to consider from a public health perspective the types of questions researchers might be asking about the relationship between menstrual function and women’s health, and to evaluate to the extent to which these questions have or have not been addressed by the scientific community. Based on the findings in this report, it is obvious that a comprehensive program of research is needed in order to begin filling the myriad gaps in scientific knowledge about the menstrual cycle. Given the lack of knowledge about many fundamental aspects of menstrual function and about linkages between the …

Sexual Coercion And Reproductive Health: A Focus On Research, Lori L. Heise, Kirsten Moore, Nahid Toubia
Reproductive Health
Gender-based violence is ignored or denied in most societies and neglected by health professionals and researchers, yet it persists in almost all societies, and, in some, it is on the increase. This report is aimed at those in the family planning/reproductive health field who desire to conduct research or implement programs to address sexual violence and its impact on women's reproductive health. Furthermore, it contributes to a better understanding of the context of sexual coercion as well as its causes and consequences. The ideas presented herein are derived largely from a two-day meeting jointly organized by the Ebert Program in …

Women's Status And Family Planning In Bangladesh: An Analysis Of Focus Group Data, Ruth Simmons, Rezina Mita
Reproductive Health
This study involved secondary analysis of a substantial set of 1987–88 focus group data from Bangladesh’s Matlab Thana, where the Family Planning and Health Services Project was underway since 1977. The project was highly successful in increasing family planning (FP) acceptance and provided a rich research base for studying the diffusion of FP and its effects. The study involved 36 focus groups with fieldworkers, community women, husbands, educated women, and community leaders. The intent of the present study is to examine the effect of FP on women's status in Bangladesh, and to prepare papers on that topic. Following leads in …
An Investigation Of Alternative Approaches To Contraceptive Logistics Management At The Peripheral Level, Abu Yusuf Choudhury, Iqbal Ahammed, Amy Gale Dunston
An Investigation Of Alternative Approaches To Contraceptive Logistics Management At The Peripheral Level, Abu Yusuf Choudhury, Iqbal Ahammed, Amy Gale Dunston
Reproductive Health
In Bangladesh, contraceptive commodities are received at the peripheral level (thana and below) from thana stores on a monthly basis by using the “pull” system. It is expected that at any point in time a worker or a center at the peripheral level will have a two-to-three-month stock of contraceptives. Many surveys/studies have indicated, however, that stockouts of contraceptives are quite frequent. To investigate an improved system of contraceptive distribution, a three-cell experimental study was undertaken. In the first two cells, contraceptives were delivered following two methods of the “push” system, while in the third cell contraceptives were distributed following …

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India with 139 million individuals, per the 1991 census. The Sample Registration System in 1992 indicated a high population growth rate of 2.3 percent and a very high birth rate of 36.2 per 1,000. Several measures have been taken to contain the growth and bring a rapid decline in the fertility rate. The Government of India and USAID began the Innovations in Family Planning Services Project under the management of the State Innovations in Family Planning Services Agency. The goal was to reduce the fertility rate in Uttar Pradesh by expanding and …

The state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) in India had a population of 139 million, as of the 1991 census. The socioeconomic profile is characterized by relatively low levels of per capita income and literacy. Further, assessment of the family planning program and the demographic status as measured by Couple Protection Rate (CPR) and Mortality/Fertility rates marks UP as one of the country’s more demographically disadvantaged states. UP has a relatively higher infant mortality rate, crude death rate, birth rate, and total fertility rate than the country as a whole, whereas CPR is much too low. The district of Gorakhpur falls …
