Dynamical Disease: Identification, Temporal Aspects And Treatment Strategies For Human Illness, Jacques Bélair, Leon Glass, Uwe An Der Heiden, John Milton
WM Keck Science Faculty Papers
Dynamical diseases are characterized by sudden changes in the qualitative dynamics of physiological processes, leading to abnormal dynamics and disease. Thus, there is a natural matching between the mathematical field of nonlinear dynamics and medicine. This paper summarizes advances in the study of dynamical disease with emphasis on a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada in February 1994. We describe the international effort currently underway to identify dynamical diseases and to study these diseases from a perspective of nonlinear dynamics. Linear and nonlinear time series analysis combined with analysis of bifurcations in dynamics are being used …

Introduction To Insect Behavioral Ecology : The Good, The Bad, And The Beautiful: Non-Indigenous Species In Florida. Invasive Adventive Insects And Other Organisms In Florida, J H. Frank, Earl D. Mccoy
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
An excessive proportion of adventive (=“non-indigenous”) species in a community has been called “biological pollution.” Proportions of adventive species of fishes, amphibia, reptiles, birds and mammals in southern Florida range from 16% to more than 42%. In Florida as a whole, the proportion of adventive plants is about 26%, but of insects is only about 8%. Almost all of the vertebrates were introduced as captive pets, but escaped or were released into the wild, and established breeding populations; few arrived as immigrants (= “of their own volition”). Almost all of the plants also were introduced, a few arrived as immigrants …

K46J B lymphomas express a T cell costimulatory activity that is not inhibited by CTLA-4Ig, anti-B7-1, anti-B7-2, anti-intercellular adhesion molecule 1 or antibodies to heat stable antigen. In this paper we report that this costimulatory activity is mediated at least in part by 4-1BB ligand, a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) gene family that binds to 4-1BB, a T cell activation antigen with homology to the TNF/nerve growth factor receptor family. A fusion protein between 4-1BB and alkaline phosphatase (4-1BB-AP) blocks T cell activation by K46J lymphomas in both an antigen-specific system and with polyclonally (anti-CD3) activated T …

The Leukemic Core Binding Factor Beta-Smooth Muscle Myosin Heavy Chain (Cbf Beta-Smmhc) Chimeric Protein Requires Both Cbf Beta And Myosin Heavy Chain Domains For Transformation Of Nih 3t3 Cells., Amitav Hajra, Pu Liu, Qing Wang, Christine Kelley
Dartmouth Scholarship
An inversion of chromosome 16 associated with the M4Eo subtype of acute myeloid leukemia produces a chimeric protein fusing the beta subunit of the transcription factor core binding factor (CBF beta) to the tail region of smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SMMHC). We investigated the oncogenic properties of this CBF beta-SMMHC chimeric protein using a 3T3 transformation assay. NIH 3T3 cells expressing CBF beta-SMMHC acquired a transformed phenotype, as indicated by their ability to form foci, grow in soft agarose, and form tumors in nude mice. Cells expressing normal CBF beta or the SMMHC tail domain did not become transformed. …

Restoration Of Circadian Behavior By Anterior Hypothalamic Heterografts, Patricia J. Sollars, Daniel P. Kimble, Gary E. Pickard
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the anterior hypothalamus (AH) is a circadian oscillator and an important component of the mammalian circadian system. To determine whether the SCN is the dominant circadian pacemaker responsible for generating a species-typical characteristic of circadian rhythms [i.e., period length (T)], neural transplantation was conducted using fetal AH donors of different species and SCN-lesioned (SCNx) hosts. The circadian behavior of each of the three donor species is clearly distinguishable by its species-typical T. The extent of SCN pacemaker autonomy was assessed by noting whether the period of the restored circadian rhythm following heterograft transplantation was characteristic …

Strain-Dependent Variation In Carbon Source Regulation Of Nucleus-Encoded Mitochondrial Proteins Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae., Timothy A. Brown, Bernard L. Trumpower
Dartmouth Scholarship
Nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins are regulated by carbon source with significant heterogeneity among four Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. This strain-dependent variation is seen both in respiratory capacity of the cells and in the expression of beta-galactosidase reporter fusions to the promoters of CYB2, CYC1, CYC3, MnSOD, and RPO41.

Thrombolytic Therapy In Acute Myocardial Infarction In Pakistan., M. Asad Karim, Ata Ata-Ur- Rehman Qureshi, Syed Faisal Mahmood, J. Akhter
Department of Medicine
To characterize features of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a Pakistani population, and assess the role of thrombolysis in our country, we studied 194 consecutive admitted patients with enzyme positive AMI. Males were affected three times more frequently; women, although affected less, had a higher incidence of complications than men. Premature coronary artery disease (CAD) was present in 50% patients presenting with AMI. An unusually high incidence of anterior wall myocardial infarction (39%) was seen. Complications were frequent with a predominance of LV failure symptoms. Cardiogenic shock was associated with a very high mortality, in excess of 93%. Streptokinase (SK) …

Log Loader Runs Over Worker At Stave Mill, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Tractors/Logging
A 56 year-old-male stave edger was killed when he entered the path of a moving log loader at a saw mill. At 4:30 pm the day of the incident, the victim had completed an 8-hour shift in the mill. He walked out of the metal building toward the employee parking area. About 18 feet from the building he was struck by a loader, which was backing up. A witness and the loader driver ran to the victim and helped move him to some nearby logs. The victim was alive and conscious. He removed his ear plugs while waiting for the …

Previous research has confirmed the role of problem-behavior theory constructs as predictors of nonconventional behaviors such as adolescent drug abuse. No prospective study, however, has examined this theory's relevance to less extreme nonconventional adolescent behaviors, such as poor health practices. In the present study, an attempt was made to predict an index composed of seven health risk factor items measured in 8th grade from numerous variables measured in 7th grade selected to reflect personality, perceived environment, and behavior systems of problem-behavior theory. In addition, problem-behavior theory was compared in predictive efficacy to a wellness notion. Factor analysis did not support …

Cells use the interferon-induced, double-stranded-RNA-dependent protein kinase PKR as a defense against virus infections. Upon activation, PKR phosphorylates and thereby inactivates the protein synthesis initiation factor eIF-2, resulting in the cessation of protein synthesis. Viruses have evolved various strategies to counteract this cellular defense. In this paper, we show that simian virus 40 (SV40) large-T antigen can antagonize the translational inhibitory effect resulting from the activation of PKR in virus-infected cells. Unlike the situation with other virus-host cell interactions, SV40 large-T antigen does not block the activation of PKR, suggesting that SV40 counteracts the cellular antiviral response mediated by PKR …

Background: Capillary hemangiomas, the most common tumors in young children, consist of proliferating capillary vessels and endothelial cells. These tumors also contain large numbers of mast cells, compared with the normal surrounding skin or tissue. We have recently shown that stem cell factor (SCF), the gene product of the murine steel locus, can act as a chemoattractant for mast cells. In this study, we investigated whether SCF might be involved in the recruitment and maintenance of mast cells in hemangiomas. Experimental Design: Cultured endothelial cells derived from a murine hemangioma were compared with normal vascular endothelial cells for the ability …

BACKGROUND
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a serious health problem, and additional treatments are needed.
METHODS
We studied the effects of oral alendronate, an aminobisphosphonate, on bone mineral density and the incidence of fractures and height loss in 994 women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. The women were treated with placebo or alendronate (5 or 10 mg daily for three years, or 20 mg for two years followed by 5 mg for one year); all the women received 500 mg of calcium daily. Bone mineral density was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The occurrence of new vertebral fractures and the progression of vertebral deformities …
