Parasite Biodiversity And Emerging Pathogens: A Role For Systematics In Limiting Impacts On Genetic Resources, Eric P. Hoberg Jan 1997

Parasite Biodiversity And Emerging Pathogens: A Role For Systematics In Limiting Impacts On Genetic Resources, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Emergence of pathogenic organisms continues as a threat to overall biodiversity and genetic resources. Macroparasites including helminths constitute a potential threat to economically important resources in agriculture and conservation biology. Limitation of this threat can be achieved through survey and inventory for biodiversity and the application of systematics to understand the host range , biogeography and history of faunas. Systematics constitutes the foundation for recognition of endemic and introduced elements of faunas and the basis for predicting the behavior of pathogens introduced to new ecological settings or host groups. The basis for emergence of pathogens has both a deep historical …

Mosques Against Malaria, M.S. Mfaume, P.J. Winch, A.M. Makemba, Zul Premji Jan 1997

Mosques Against Malaria, M.S. Mfaume, P.J. Winch, A.M. Makemba, Zul Premji

Pathology, East Africa

In a community-based malaria control project covering a predominantly Muslim population in the United Republic of Tanzania, difficulty was encountered in motivating people to have their mosquito nets reimpregnated with insecticide at six-monthly intervals. Education on this subject was therefore provided in mosques during Friday noon prayers. People who attended these services considered them an appropriate forum for discussing health concerns and viewed them as a credible source of information.Insecticide-impregnated bednets help to control the spread of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The Bagamoyo Bednet Project is a community-based scheme to develop a sustainable system for the distribution and promotion …

The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith Jan 1997

The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith

Center for Policy Research

How is the economic status of the elderly changing and what are their prospects for the future? My portrait tells us how well off they are on average, but also about the vast disparities that exist among them. This description includes an often neglected measure of their economic well-being--the amount of wealth they control. Amazingly little is known about how much personal wealth older people have and how and what determines its distribution. But the conventional definition of household wealth ignores two critical components of wealth: the expected income flows from pensions and Social Security. For some elderly households, Social …

Interleukin-2 Fusion Protein: An Investigational Therapy For Interleukin-2 Receptor Expressing Malignancies, Jean Nichols, Foss Francine, Kuzel Timothy, Lemaistre Charles Fred, Platanias Leonidas, Ratain Mark, Rook Alain, Mansoor Saleh, Schwartz Gary

Haematology and Oncology, East Africa

DAB3s91L-2 is an interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) specific fusion protein with a molecular weight of 58 kD containing the enzymatic and translocation domains of diphtheria toxin (DT) and human IL-2. This fusion protein is able to direct the cytocidal action of the DT enzymatic region only to cells which bear the IL-2R. The human IL-2R exists in three forms: low, intermediate and high affinity. The high-affinity form is believed to be the biologically relevant form on mature, activated T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes and monocytes. DAB3sgIL-2 is able to bind selectively to the high-affinity IL-2R in a concentration-dependent manner, and once bound is internalised …

Hazard Communication: A Review Of The Science Underpinning The Art Of Communication For Health And Safety, Barbara Sattler, B Lippy, T Jordan

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

This report was commissioned by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration to review the state of scientific inquiry supporting our knowledge regarding key elements of chemical hazard communication programs: labeling, warnings, material safety data sheets, and worker training. This endeavor supports the international effort to harmonize laws, regulations, and consensus standards affecting the ways in which information about hazardous chemicals is communicated. The international effort can be divided into three major functions: classifying health and environmental hazards, classifying physical hazards; and communicating hazard information. This last component involves the determination of what information will be communicated to users …

Minor Physical Anomalies: Modifiers Of Environmental Risk For Psychopathology, Daniel S. Pine, David Shaffer, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Mark Davies

Publications and Research

Tested the hypothesis that minor physical anomalies (MPAs) modify an adolescent's vulnerability to environmental risk factors for psychopathology. 118 male 17-yr-olds who had been evaluated as 7-year-olds received a comprehensive neuropsychiatric evaluation. The evaluation included standardized assessments of environmental risk factors for psychiatric impairment, neurological signs, IQ, MPAs, and psychiatric impairment. The relationship between psychiatric status and environmental risk was examined as a function of the MPA profile. There was a significant interaction between MPAs and environmental risk in predicting psychiatric status. Environmental risk was more predictive of psychiatric impairment at age 17 in Ss with high scores on the …

Peer Relations Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Joan Elizabeth Licari Jan 1997

Peer Relations Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Joan Elizabeth Licari

Graduate Research Papers

This paper's main focus is on the peer relations of children with ADHD. Many interventions are used with children who have ADHD. One of the most widely used intervention is medication. The drug that is most associated with ADHD is methylphenidate or Ritalin. Medication, which can reduce some problematic behaviors associated with ADHD, has not been found to be very beneficial in peer relations.

Children who have ADHD are at risk for later psychopathology (mental disorders), among other problems, and thus early interventions are critical to reduce the onset of later pathologies.

This paper is intended to provide an overview …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Lactose intolerance is frequently encountered in children with persistent diarrhoea (PD). Selection of an appropriate milk-based formulation is a major management problem in the developing world. In a consecutive series of studies, we evaluated the role of feeding a traditional rice-lentil (khitchri) diet alone (KY) or in combination with either soy formula (KY-Soy) a dilute buffalo milk (KY-B), in children (age 6 months-3 years) with PD. Serial observations of stool output, caloric intake and weight gain of these children over a 14 day period indicated satisfactory tolerance of the KY diet with adequate weight gain. The weight gain and stool …

Immune responses to an academic stressor were examined in healthy and asthmatic adolescents with regard to their illness symptom reports. Eighty-seven high school students completed a health diary for 2 weeks and provided three blood samples during midsemester, final-exam, and postexam periods. During exam week, all students showed significant immunological alterations from baseline: Natural killer cell activity was significantly lower, whereas lymphocyte proliferation and neutrophil superoxide release were significantly higher. These immune changes tended to return toward baseline during the postexam period, but the enhanced neutrophil reactivity continued to rise. Overall, immunological responses were similar between asthmatic subjects and controls. …

All children in the LS and CA groups successfully accessed the interaction, and most did so quickly. Two children from the SLI group did not access, and the 4 remaining subjects required varying amounts of time to access. Following successful access, the triadic interactions of subjects were examined. The accessing children with SU talked significantly less, were …

Prediction Of Stress Appraisals From Mastery, Extraversion, Neuroticism, And General Appraisal Tendencies, S. H. Hemenover, Richard A. Dienstbier Dec 1996

Prediction Of Stress Appraisals From Mastery, Extraversion, Neuroticism, And General Appraisal Tendencies, S. H. Hemenover, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Several personality dimensions (mastery, extraversion, and neuroticism) and a new General Appraisal Measure were used to predict stress appraisals made by college students in specific situations. Using multiple-regression techniques, mastery and general appraisal tendencies predicted appraisals for an intellectual task. Path analysis supported a structural model with general appraisal tendencies as a mediator between mastery and specific appraisal. In the second study mastery, extraversion, neuroticism, and general appraisal tendencies predicted appraisals for an academic stressor. Path analysis again supported the mediational nature of general appraisal tendencies from personality variables to specific appraisal. We discuss a potential causal mechanism between personality …
