Ethics In Perioperative Practice—Patient Advocacy, Kathryn Schroeter
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Though often difficult, ethical decision making is necessary when caring for surgical patients. Perioperative nurses have to recognize ethical dilemmas and be prepared to take action based on the ethical code outlined in the American Nurses Association's (ANA's) Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. In this second of a nine‐part series that will help perioperative nurses relate the ANA code to their own area of practice, the author looks at the third provision statement, which addresses nurses' position as patient advocates. A method of modulating cytokine mediated hepatic injury by administering deltorphins to a mammal. Deltorphin I SEQ ID NO:1, deltorphin II SEQ ID NO:2 or combinations of deltorphins I SEQ ID NO:1 and II SEQ ID NO:2 may be administered. A deltorphin concentration in the range of about 0.5 mg/kg to about 20 mg/kg in a physiologically acceptable formulation blocks a cytokine cascade in a murine model of septic shock. A therapeutic method of modulating cytokine mediated acute inflammatory, trauma induced and toxin induced hepatic injury, particularly via tumor necrosis factor modulation, is thus disclosed.

Mangrove Response To Attack By A Root Boring Isopod: Root Repair Versus Architectural Modification, Robert Allen Brooks, Susan S. Bell
Mangrove Response To Attack By A Root Boring Isopod: Root Repair Versus Architectural Modification, Robert Allen Brooks, Susan S. Bell
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
The nature of the plant-animal interaction between wood-boring isopods and the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle L. has been controversial, with discussion ranging from the damage caused by the isopod being detrimental to beneficial for the mangroves they attack. Initiation of lateral roots by the mangrove in response to isopod burrowing has been one of the most commonly cited examples as support for the concept of beneficial herbivory. In this study, the possibility of root repair as a response of Rhizophora to burrowing by Sphaeroma terebrans Bate was evaluated. Previously burrowed prop roots were tagged in the field and the fate …

Numerous studies have found a host of factors that are likely to result in more successful applications to graduate schools. This study was a retrospective examination of the variables that distinguish graduate students who believed they were better prepared for graduate school. We examined several of these factors, including variables associated with undergraduate education and the individual for their relation to self-rated preparedness for graduate school. Our findings highlighted quality faculty interactions and participation in research as important factors in graduate students’ post hoc ratings of their preparedness for graduate school. We also found that different types of institutions differed …

Cationic liposomes and the complexes they form with DNA (lipoplexes) constitute the most promising alternative to the use of viral vectors for gene therapy. One of the limitations to their application in vivo, however, is the inhibition of gene delivery by serum. In a previous study, we demonstrated that transferrin (Tf)-lipoplexes were superior to plain lipoplexes in transfecting HeLa cells in the presence of high concentrations of serum. With the goal of obtaining efficient gene expression in vivo, we evaluated the efficacy of Tf-lipoplexes (containing DOTAP and cholesterol) in transfecting primary hepatocytes and adipocytes in the presence of high serum …

Comparative Genomic Hybridization Array Analysis, Annette M. Molinaro, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Dan H. Moore
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
At the present time, there is increasing evidence that cancer may be regulated by the number of copies of genes in tumor cells. Through microarray technology it is now possible to measure the number of copies of thousands of genes and gene segments in samples of chromosomal DNA. Microarray comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH) provides the opportunity to both measure DNA sequence copy number gains and losses and map these aberrations to the genomic sequence. Gains can signify the over-expression of oncogenes, genes which stimulate cell growth and have become hyperactive, while losses can signify under-expression of tumor suppressor genes, …

Murine Epidermal Cell Antigen (Skn)-Directed Autoimmunity Induced By Transfer Of Cd4+ T Cells, Susan H. Jackman, Shivaleela Keerthy, Giselle Perry
Biochemistry and Microbiology
While pathogenic T cells have been identified for several diseases with epithelial cell damage, an autoimmune T cell-mediated response targeted against a known keratinocyte antigen has not been reported. Previously we described an autoimmune response directed to the mouse epidermal cell antigens, Skn. For our murine model, primed Skn-immune lymphocytes are adoptively transferred to recipients, which develop lesions at the site of mild skin trauma. In this study we investigated the nature of the autoimmune component of the Skn response. A time-course study demonstrated a relationship between the number of primed Sknimmune cells injected and the severity of skin lesions …

Direct And Indirect Excitation Of Laterodorsal Tegmental Neurons By Hypocretin/Orexin Peptides: Implications For Wakefulness And Narcolepsy, Sophie Burlet, Christopher Tyler, Christopher S. Leonard
NYMC Faculty Publications
Compelling evidence links the recently discovered hypothalamic peptides Hypocretin/Orexin (Hcrt/Orx) to rapid eye movement sleep (REM) control and the sleep disorder narcolepsy, yet how they influence sleep-related systems is not well understood. We investigated the action of Hcrt/Orx on mesopontine cholinergic (MPCh) neurons of the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT), a target group whose function is altered in canine narcolepsy and appears pivotal for normal REM and wakefulness. Extracellular recordings from mouse brainstem slices revealed that Hcrt/Orx evoked prolonged firing of LDT neurons. Whole-cell recordings revealed that Hcrt/Orx had actions on both presynaptic neurons and at postsynaptic sites. Hcrt/Orx produced an …

Sharing Power And Knowledge: Professional And Mental Health Consumer/Survivor Researchers Working Together In A Participatory Action Research Project, Joanna Ochocka, Rich Janzen, Geoffrey Nelson
Psychology Faculty Publications
In this article we document and reflect on the process and outcomes of consumer/survivor researchers' involvement in a community mental health research project. The study used a participatory action research approach that challenges traditional assumptions of how to conduct research. Research roles and relationships were reexamined by both professional and consumer/survivor researchers. Four values were central to the research process: consumer/survivor empowerment, supportive relationships, learning as an ongoing process, and social justice. The benefits of this value-driven approach were seen in terms of positive impacts on the lives of individual researchers and also in the quality of the research itself. …
