Underreporting Of Patient-Reported Outcomes In Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Clinical Trials, Anthony Messina, Quentin O'Brien
Underreporting Of Patient-Reported Outcomes In Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Clinical Trials, Anthony Messina, Quentin O'Brien
Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Posters and Presentations
Introduction
Improvements in overall survival (OS) and quality of life (QoL) are clinically relevant outcomes that should guide clinical decision-making. Patients with MPNs can live with their disease for a long period of time, which increases the importance of understanding the impact of treatment in regards to a patients’ Health-Related QoL. Therefore, including PROs in clinical trials has become paramount in facilitating informed treatment decisions made by health care providers and patients. Furthermore, the FDA encourages the implementation of patient-centric measures in clinical trials.
Objective
We aimed to evaluate the frequency at which PRO measures are utilized as study endpoints …

Creation Of A Health And Wellness And Self Care Tool For Mothers Of Infants Requiring A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Stay, Genevieve Maccarthy
Creation Of A Health And Wellness And Self Care Tool For Mothers Of Infants Requiring A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Stay, Genevieve Maccarthy
Doctor of Occupational Therapy Capstone Projects
Purpose: Despite occupational therapy’s established role in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in providing family centered intervention, mothers continue to report lack of readiness to discharge home and emotional distress while in the NICU and upon discharge home. Occupational therapists have the unique skillset to promote engagement in meaningful activities and facilitate overall health and wellness for mother’s during and after their NICU stay.
Method: A qualitative survey was distributed to a convenience sample of fifteen participants to identify emotional experiences in the NICU, how these experiences impact each mother fulfilling her role as a primary caretaker, and the …
A Discharge Checklist To Combat Patient Readmission: A Case Study In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Shaylin O’Connell
A Discharge Checklist To Combat Patient Readmission: A Case Study In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Shaylin O’Connell
Doctor of Occupational Therapy Capstone Projects
A Discharge Checklist to Combat Patient Readmission: A Case Study in a Skilled Nursing Facility focuses on the creation of a discharge checklist, as an intervention, to increase the competency for occupational therapists working in skilled nursing facilities discharging clients back to their home environment. A SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility) provides post-acute healthcare services and rehabilitation for patients following a hospitalization prior to discharging home (Burke et al., 2017). This case study for clinical improvement uses the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) quality model and a multiple case study research design for evaluation. The goal of the quality improvement …

Using Active Learning Methods, Adult Learning Principles And The Identification Of Critical To Quality (Ctq) Factors To Create Effective Site Staff Training Plans And Improve Quality Risk Management, Kathleen A. Thoma
Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Posters and Presentations
Objective: The objective of this poster presentation is to help sponsors, monitors and clinical research site managers design and conduct more meaningful and effective site staff training activities in order to enhance the implementation of study protocols in accordance with the investigational plan and thus improve quality risk management.
Content: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the International Council on Harmonization (ICH) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) emphasize that sponsors should choose investigators, clinical research site staff and monitors that are qualified by education, training and experience. In addition, these entities have taken a more risk-based approach to …
Getting Sexual And Gender Minority Health “Into The Brick And Mortar”: A Mixed Methods Implementation Study, Mandi Pratt-Chapman
Getting Sexual And Gender Minority Health “Into The Brick And Mortar”: A Mixed Methods Implementation Study, Mandi Pratt-Chapman
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) have unique health risks and health care needs, but medical students receive little training on SGM health (Obedin-Maliver, et al., 2011). This mixed methods study sought to learn from curricular champions in diverse settings to apply lessons learned at the George Washington University (GW). Exploratory models that included eight potential predictor variables for six criterion variables were tested using multiple linear regression. Criterion variables were: knowledge, attitudes, and clinical preparedness measured by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT-DOCSS; Bidell, 2017); attitudes measured by the Attitudes Toward LGBT Patients Scale …

Riboswitches are conformationally dynamic RNAs that regulate gene expression by binding specific small molecules. ZTP riboswitches bind the purine-biosynthetic intermediate 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside 5'-monophosphate (ZMP) and its triphosphorylated form (ZTP). Ligand binding to this riboswitch ultimately upregulates genes involved in folate and purine metabolism. Using an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), the room-temperature structure of the Fusobacterium ulcerans ZTP riboswitch bound to ZMP has now been determined at 4.1 Å resolution. This model, which was refined against a data set from ∼750 diffraction images (each from a single crystal), was found to be consistent with that previously obtained from data collected at …

BACKGROUND: Phthalates are used as plasticizers in the manufacturing of flexible, plastic medical products. Patients can be subjected to high phthalate exposure through contact with plastic medical devices. We aimed to investigate the cardiac safety and biocompatibility of mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), a phthalate with documented exposure in intensive care patients.
METHODS: Optical mapping of transmembrane voltage and pacing studies were performed on isolated, Langendorff-perfused rat hearts to assess cardiac electrophysiology after MEHP exposure compared with controls. MEHP dose was chosen based on reported blood concentrations after an exchange transfusion procedure.
RESULTS: Thirty-minute exposure to MEHP increased the atrioventricular node (147 …

Therapist Attitudes Towards Animal Assisted Therapy: A Qualitative Study, Karen Vizaniaris
Therapist Attitudes Towards Animal Assisted Therapy: A Qualitative Study, Karen Vizaniaris
Doctor of Occupational Therapy Capstone Projects
PURPOSE. To understand the attitudes and perceptions of therapists towards animal assisted therapy (AAT) and towards the barriers and facilitators of implementing AAT into practice. METHOD. This descriptive qualitative studied consisted of ten semi-structured interviews with rehabilitation therapists that were coded for common themes. Data from two Likert-scale questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS. Eight themes emerged from the data including therapists’ attitudes towards animal assisted therapy and their own competence, three core benefits of animal assisted therapy that they identified (increased patient participation, positive emotional/social influence, and contribution to patient-centered goals), and three main barriers towards implementation (scheduling/operations, …

Avoiding Predatory Publishing: The Role Of Librarians In Faculty Education, Ruth Bueter
Avoiding Predatory Publishing: The Role Of Librarians In Faculty Education, Ruth Bueter
Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations
Predatory publishing has become an increasing problem in recent years. Due to a lack of awareness about predatory publishers, faculty authors are at risk of harming their reputations by publishing their research in questionable journals. Librarians can play a vital role in educating faculty authors about this important topic. This session will review a variety of outreach and educational efforts that have been successful in educating faculty about the risks of predatory publishing at Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library including the creation of a comprehensive LibGuide, faculty consultation services, workshops, and social media posts. Future opportunities for outreach will also be …
