GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

This pilot study reports the baseline data of a prospective longitudinal study examining the educational achievements of grandchildren being raised by grandparents in parent absent homes. The baseline data includes 117 grandchildren in grades K-12 in two school districts in a southeastern state. School records reporting 2,230 grades were examined for grade point average (GPA) and attendance for K-12 and conduct in grades K-5. The majority of the grandchildren achieved A/B averages. There were no significant differences between gender, pre-care experiences, placement by welfare agencies or paternal involvement across years of schooling. PURPOSE: To investigate the motivation and the effects of: tongue movement direction; resistance force level; repetition number; and sustained tongue contraction duration on tongue motor performance in healthy pre-teen children using computer games. METHODS: An analytical observational cross-sectional study was conducted with 15 healthy 11-13 year-old children with normal lingual strength. The participants played six computer games using a tongue-controlled joystick. The series varied the time for continuous force application on the target (3 and 5 seconds) and the target force level (0.5, 1 and 2 N). Down syndrome (DS) has the highest prevalence of any chromosomal abnormality identified in newborns. DS children have specific eating and swallowing difficulties such as poor tongue control, mouth opening, swallowing food without chewing, and both facial and occlusal abnormalities. DS children are also at high risk of aspiration, and swallowing food without chewing is considered to be a factor associated with increased risk of aspiration and eating problems. Children with Down Syndrome (DS) show developmental retardation of gross motor function including acquisition of oral movements related to eating and swallowing. To characterize the process of development/acquisition of eating/swallowing function of children with DS, interlabial pressure (IP) during taking food into the mouth was assessed. This study included 99 children with DS (birth to 4 year-old), and 112 age-matched control children showing typical development. The objective of this paper is to introduce selected statistical and epidemiologic topics that are of interest to interdisciplinary teams of healthcare quality professionals, educators, technical staff, and researchers who participate in clinical simulation scholarship. Four research vignettes in the setting of a hypothetical clinical simulation training workshop are presented. The first vignette illustrates the utility of exact logistic regression when analyzing a small dataset. Diabetic muscle infarction (DMI) is a rare microvascular complication of spontaneous ischemic necrosis of skeletal muscle in patients with poorly controlled diabetes. We herein describe the case of a 26-year-old woman with a history of type I diabetes and accompanying diabetic microvascular complications of neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy, who presented with sudden onset of swelling and sharp pain in her bilateral thighs. T2-weighted MRI imaging revealed subcutaneous edema and sub-fascial, hyper-intense enhancement of proximal thigh musculature. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning are beginning to have an impact on everyday experiences, from natural language processing used in automated telephone call centers to semi-autonomous vehicles. These techniques have also been applied to medical care. The applications of the tetracycline class of antibiotics extends beyond their antimicrobial activity to anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and neuroprotective applications making it a commonly used class of medication. Minocycline, a second generation tetracycline, has inherent characteristics that improve absorption and distribution. These benefits promote even more wide spread use. This familiarity of usage breeds prescriptive complacency toward the dermatologic complications including hyperpigmentation. Wilson’s Disease, a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease, is caused by a mutation in the ATP7B enzyme gene. Without this enzyme, copper builds up in the brain, liver, and cornea causing a multitude of symptoms. This article explores the role of therapist self-disclosure in clinical settings. Distinctions are made between the enmeshed concepts of privacy, secrecy, and confidentiality to elucidate the role of ignorance in maintaining the power dynamics in therapeutic relationships. While some measure of privacy is essential to counseling practice, secretive behavior (in which the counselor divulges too little about themselves) can have a negative impact on the therapeutic relationship and the client’s therapeutic outcomes. Social marketing campaigns can be an effective method for reaching and engaging limited-resource participants in health messages related to nutrition and physical activity. The target audience should be engaged throughout the process of message identification and creation. This study included focus groups with limited-resource caregivers to help identify information sources utilized, nutrition messages most likely to resonate, and preferred communication channels. Nine focus groups with 108 limited-resource caregivers were conducted. Most participants were between the ages of 21 and 44, with a majority receiving SNAP benefits. Employee health is regarded as a strategic advantage with individual, organizational, and societal benefits. This study sought to describe the major health issues, motivations, barriers, and needs related to healthy lifestyles for Cooperative Extension employees. A total of 16 focus groups were conducted throughout Tennessee with 105 participants. Separate focus groups were conducted with seven groups of University of Tennessee Extension employees: administrative assistants, county agents, county directors, program assistants, departmental faculty, administrators, and professional staff. A growing homebound population may be at risk for social isolation and loneliness. Health-related social needs play a contributing role in these conditions. Research shows social isolation and loneliness are drivers of health outcomes. This pilot feasibility study seeks to explore patient-centered insight into perceptions of social isolation and loneliness in a homebound population. Eight participants were recruited from a home-based primary care practice within a family medicine residency program. One 30-minute semi-structured interview was completed in participants’ homes.
