Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of 3 chemical agents used sequentially and electrical stimuli on parthenogenetic activation of in vitro matured bovine oocytes and comparison with a standard IVF protocol for embryo developmental rates. For this purpose, oocytes were matured in tissue culture medium-199 (TCM-199) at 39 °C and 5% of CO_2 in humidified air. For IVF, matured oocytes were fertilized in Modified Tyrode-Lactate Medium. In the parthenogenetic activation process, direct current (DC) was pulsed (133 V/500 \mum) for 25 \mus and oocytes were sequentially activated with calcium ionophore (CaI) for 10 min, cycloheximide (CHX) …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 181 Jersey cows were used to investigate how leptin gene polymorphisms affect milk production traits such as milk yield, fat and protein yield, and fat and protein content. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped, including the A59V in exon 3 and Sau3AI in intron 2. The genotype, allele, and haplotype frequencies were estimated. Statistical analysis revealed that the A59V polymorphism significantly affected the milk, protein, and fat yield (P Keywords: Leptin, SNP, Jersey cows, milk production traits

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Fatal pulmonary aspergillosis and AA type amyloid accumulations in the liver and spleen are described in a female ostrich (Struthio camelus). The animal had had respiratory problems and long-term inappetence over an 8-week period. Necropsy revealed that several soft, grayish to white nodules ranging from 1 to 3 mm in diameter were scattered throughout the lungs and thoracic air sacs. Prominent enlargement of the liver and spleen was observed. No gross lesions were found in the other organs studied. The microscopic examination showed severe, necrotizing, granulomatous pneumonia, and air sacculitis. Aspergillus fumigatus was recovered from the lungs and air sacs …

A comparison of 3 methods for variance component estimation to compute the heritability of meat quality characteristics (body weight, breast meat weight, breast yield, l, a, b, c, h, and ph) was performed using the methods of maximum likelihood (ML), restricted maximum likelihood (REML), and minimum variance quadratic unbiased estimator (MIVQUE). The parent population was set up at random from a closed population of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Selection was not applied for any productive characteristics and no special care was taken to avoid inbreeding. After 12-h feed withdrawal, the birds were weighed and slaughtered at 35 days of …

Concentration Of Products Of Nitric Oxide Oxidation And Some Vitamins In Sheep With Naturally Acquired Babesiosis, Handan Mert, İbrahi̇m Yörük, Yeter Değer, Ni̇hat Mert, Semi̇ha Dede, Fatmagül Yur Jan 2009

Concentration Of Products Of Nitric Oxide Oxidation And Some Vitamins In Sheep With Naturally Acquired Babesiosis, Handan Mert, İbrahi̇m Yörük, Yeter Değer, Ni̇hat Mert, Semi̇ha Dede, Fatmagül Yur

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the present study was to determine serum concentrations of the products of nitric oxide oxidation (nitrate and nitrite) and some vitamins (retinol acetate, \alpha- and \delta-tocopherol, and vitamin D_3) in sheep naturally infected with Babesia ovis. The investigation included 30 infected and 10 control sheep. Serum \alpha -tocopherol levels were significantly lower (P < 0.05), and nitrate and nitrite concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in infected animals than in controls. It is thought that the elevated nitrate and nitrite levels of the sheep infected with babesiosis were due to the result of damage caused by Babesia. On the other hand, a significant decrease was observed in \alpha -tocopherol levels in sheep with babesiosis because of damage and pathophysiological changes to erythrocytes.

A longitudinal incision was made through the antimesenteric border of the involved intestine and an approximately 350 g mass mostly composed of dried roughage was removed. The day after surgery, intestinal sounds were detectable; …

Also, brain histopathological examination revealed focal areas of gliosis in the cerebral cortex and white matter areas. Satellitosis, neuronal degeneration (chromatolysis) and neuronophagia were also observed. These …

Evaluation Of Aflatoxicosis In Hens Fed With Commercial Poultry Feed, Dharumadurai Dhanasekaran, Annamalai Panneerselvam, Nooruddin Thajuddin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effect of aflatoxin in the growth of hens was histopathologically analyzed. Mycotoxigenic fungi were isolated and characterized as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. The aflatoxin was extracted from Aspergillus flavus and their impact on the growth pattern of hens was evaluated. The histopathological analysis reveals that more lesions were found in the vital organs of hens in comparison with the control chick group. In the present study, it is concluded that the quality of poultry feed plays the most important role in a poultry farm. It is suggested that the use of chicks resistant to aflatoxicosis will help in …
