Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the electrocardiographic parameters necessary to determine cardiac enlargements and to establish and distinguish such complaints from each other in the early stage in dogs with circulatory problems were assessed. The material of the study consisted of 33 dogs 1.5-15 years of age with cardiac enlargements determined from 140 dogs suspected of having cardiac disease based on clinical, radiographic and electrocardiographic analyses. In these dogs, 12 cases of left atrial hypertrophy (LAH), 6 cases of right atrial hypertrophy (RAH), 22 cases of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and 1 case of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) were determined. The results …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the anaesthetic effects and reliability of the combination of etomidate, which is a non-barbiturate injectable anaesthetic, and alfentanil, which is a strong narcotic analgesic, in anaesthesia induction in dogs were investigated. Twenty dogs were used in this study. Following intramuscular administration of atropine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg, diazepam was given intravenously at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg. Following tranquillisation, etomidate at a dose of 2mg/kg and alfentanil at a dose of 0.02mg/kg were injected intravenously. With this anaesthetic protocol, anaesthesia lasting approximately 15 min was produced. When haematological parameters (haemogram and ALT, AST, BUN, TP, …

Comparative Study Of Butorphanol-Ketamin Hcl And Xylazine-Ketamin Hcl Combinations For Their Clinical And Cardiovascular/Respiratory Effects In Healthy Dogs, İbrahi̇m Demi̇rkan, Gülteki̇n Atalan, Hali̇l İbrahi̇m Gökce, İsa Özaydin, Fi̇kret Çelebi̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The cardiovascular/respiratory and clinical effects of a xylazine-ketamine combination or a butorphanol-ketamine combination for the induction of anaesthesia in dogs were compared. A total of 12 dogs (two groups 6 dogs each) were premedicated with either xylazine (group I) or butorphanol (group II) and anaesthetized with ketamine HCl and monitored at 0, 5, 15, 30 and 60 min after induction. Sedative effects in both groups started within 15 min. Respiratory rate was significantly decreased in group I (P < 0.05). Body temperature was significantly altered after 15 min in group I (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001). Haematological analyses indicated that there were no differences in pH values between the groups. It was concluded that butorphanol followed by ketamine was comparable with xylazine plus ketamine for the induction of anaesthesia in healthy dogs.

For the experimental part of the study, survey radiographs were taken, arthrography and arthroscopy were performed consencutively in 20 stifle joints of 10 clinically healthy dogs of different breed, sex, age, and weight. The same procedures were performed in 3 cases which were referred to the Department of Surgery. According to the results, while it is possible to detect the bony tissue and stifle joint space in direct radiography, the suprapatellar pouch, plate …

The effects of isofluran on cardiac performance in dogs with experimental acute hemorrhagic anemia (AHA) were inves-tigated. A local anesthetic agent was administered to dogs in the control group (=2) and isofluran to dogs in the experimental group (n=6). Left ventricle systolic and diastolic blood pressure with filling and ejection time before and 15 min after AHA were deter-mined in all dogs. While left ventricle systolic blood pressure decreased (from 114±3 mm/Hg to 54±4 mm/Hg) and diastolic blood pressure decreased (from 88±6 mm/Hg to 40±2 mm/Hg), filling time increased (from 0.16±0.025 mm/sec to 0.40±0.065 mm/sec, p

The serum of 66 dogs with intestinal parasites (showing gastrointestinal problems caused by taeniosis, coccidiosis, ancylostomosis, trichuriosis and ascarididosis) was examined by electrophoresis. There were 6 dogs with coccidiosis, 6 dogs with ancylostomosis, 6 dogs with trichuriosis, 24 dogs with taeniosis and 24 dogs with ascarididosis. After agar gel protein electorphoresis of the serum samples, ?1 globulin levels were significantly lower in the coccidiosis group than in the other groups (p

End-systolic blood pressure was found to be 113±3.1 mm/Hg in the left ventricle 53±2.9 mm/Hg in the right ventricle, 3±2.5 mm/Hg in the left atrium, 3±1.3 mm/Hg in the right atrium and 127±3 mm/Hg in the aorta. In addition, times of contraction, relaxation, filling, pre-ejection and …

A case of spontaneosly ruptured splenic hemangiosarcoma with abdominal dissemination in a 12-year-old male German shepherd dog is described. At necropsy, a ruptured tumor mass was seen in the ventral region of the visceral surface of the spleen, and disseminated tumor masses were seen throughout the peritoneal cavity. Histologically, in both the primary tumor mass and dis-seminated tumor masses, atypical endothelial cells lining vascular spaces as small clefts or as cavernous channels were observed. Some immunological properties of tumor cells were determined for endothelial cell markers (factor VII-related antigen=von Willebrand's factor [vWf] and CD31 antigen), mesenchymal tissue marker (vimentin) and …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this case report, a sudden devoloped ventricular fibrillation following Pentothal anaesthesia in a dog and the treatment done was subjected. No abnormal findings were detected according to haemotologic and biochemical tests and ECG obtained at the preoperative period. Blood gases analysis and ECG monitoring were performed before anaesthesia induction for this experimental surgery. After the case was premedicated with Xylazine hydrochlorid (2mg/kg im), anaesthesia was induced by pentothal (Thiopental sodium 15 mg/kg iv). Following respiratoric depression, the dog was entubated and connected to the volume respiratory device. The dog was ventilated with 40% oxygene-air mixture 16 per minute. At …
