Heart Rate Change During Aquatic Exercise In Small, Medium And Large Healthy Dogs, Korakot Nganvongpanit, Siriphun Kongsawasdi, Bussaba Chuatrakoon, Terdsak Yano

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study was divided into two experiments. For the first experiment, heart rates during exercise of 21healthy male dogs were recorded. The animals were brought to swim every 2 days, 8 times in all, for 10 minutes.Heart rates were measured every minute using a pulse watch. For the second experiment, 134 healthy adult dogswere categorized into three groups: small (41), medium (51) and large breed (42). Their heart rates were measuredevery minute for 34 minutes after the 5th swimming. In the first experiment, the heart rates during the 1st–4thswimming were significantly higher (p<0.05) than during the 5th 8th swimming. In the second experiment, the heartrates were significantly different (p<0.05) between small, medium and large dogs. No correlations were foundbetween weight, age, and heart rate. From the results of the second experiment, we were able to formulate anequation for predictable heart rate of each group of dogs (small, medium and large dogs). From the results, werecommend that the limits on the length of time spent for aquatic exercise should be 15–30 minutes, depending on thebreed (size) of dog. Moreover, there should be trainers observing each dog to prevent over-exercise.

Evaluation Of Microsatellite Polymorphism And Genetic Variability In Thai Ridgeback And Bangkaew Dogs, Janjira Phavaphutanon, Sudtisa Laopiem

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The origin of dogs came from the limited number of founders leading to inbreeding or genetic diseasewithin or among breeds. Thai Ridgeback (TR) and Bangkaew (BK) dogs were the only native dog breeds that webelieved to originate in Thailand. The study of genetic variability in Thai dogs (39 Thai Ridgeback dogs, 82 Bangkaewdogs) was defined by using 12 microsatellite markers. These DNA markers were highly informative and distributedthrough the canine genome. The result from these markers revealed the higher number of alleles, observedheterozygosity (Ho), expected heterozygosity (He) and polymorphic information content (PIC) in TR and BK dogs. The average Ho, He …

Genes Associated With Genetic Diseases In Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs And Border Collies, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Canine genetic disorders inherited through genes or chromosomes. Mutations can also occur spontaneouslyor influenced by environmental factors. Such disorders can be transmitted to offspring. However, the disease may notbe developed owing to other influenced factors. Dominant and recessive genetic mechanisms also affect the traitoutcome. This article discussed the abnormalities of genes affected by the disease and/ or genetic disorders in Collies,Shetland sheepdogs and Border collies, sharing the Collie lineage. Most of these disorders are caused by autosomalrecessive genes. Hence, paired recessive alleles are required in order to express its phenotype. Although dogs areasymptomatic carriers, they can pass down defective genes …

The Activity Of Plasma Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 As A Marker To Reflect The Tissue Level Of Mammary Glands Tumor In Dogs, Wei-Yau Shia, Shih-Ming Liu, Chun-Sheng Lee, Jian-Liang Lin, Chih-Chung Chou, Yumi Yuasa, Shih-Chieh Chang, Wei-Ming Lee

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

In order to understand the change of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in dogs with mammary gland tumor (MGT), theactivity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in plasma samples, MGT tissues and near by normal mammary gland tissues wereevaluated by gelatin zymography. The levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were significantly higher in tumor tissues thanthose in normal gland tissues (p<0.05). Plasma MMP-9 levels in malignant cases were higher than those in benign(p=0.15) and non-tumor cases (p<0.05). Likewise, plasma MMP-2 levels in malignant MGT cases were higher thannon-tumor (p<0.01) and benign cases (p=0.54). Furthermore, plasma MMP-9 levels were reflected and positivelycorrelated with MMP-9 in tumor tissues (r=0.78, p=0.02), but not MMP-2. Our results indicated that the MMP-2 andMMP-9 levels are associated with tumor malignancy, and plasma MMP-9 activity can become a potential marker bothin follow-up and prognosis of canine MGT patients.
