An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a life saving device which can reset the heart if it begins beating irregularly or dangerously by shocking it. Normally, the ICD procedure requires putting leads into the heart to shock the patient which can cause complications. The subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) has gained popularity with patients and physicians since it does not require any component to be placed deeper than just below the skin. Considering the structural diversity of the ER, we aim to establish a quantitative relationship between the complex morphology and protein sorting functions of the ER. We are specifically interested in understanding how proteins move as a function of the ER morphological constraints. In collaboration with the Koslover lab at the University of California San Diego, we aim to use our images to build a quantitative mathematical model describing protein distribution in the ER.

In 2017, Manatee County Government (Florida, USA) used an untrained sign language interpreter during a media briefing on Hurricane Irma evacuation orders. The individual signed incorrectly, resulting in confusion for the community and embarrassment for the organization. This case study presents the background of accessible information in crisis management -- why and how disaster preparedness information is interpreted for the deaf community; provides the event's consequences, as well as local and global implications; and discusses ways to incorporate deaf and hard-of-hearing stakeholders and groups into existing structures and programs.

What Influences Our Decision To Vaccinate? The Social Amplification Of Risk Framework And Vaccination, Laura B. Carper

The current study applies the social amplification risk framework to the anti-vaccination movement, specifically to the social factors that influence the likelihood to vaccinate. A total of 264 participants were recruited using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk engine and students from a large southern university. Participants responded to questions about their personal, friend, and family experiences with vaccines, their discussion about vaccines, and trust in vaccine literature (CDC, Facebook, family, etc.). Lastly, participants responded to a modified Duke’s social support scale. Results indicated that the likelihood to vaccinate is impacted by several social factors and that those factors can be amplified based …

After the study of testing determinants of risk tolerance affecting information sharing, this study was conducted as a second step to actually develop the scale for risk tolerance. Firstly, this study followed qualitative steps, such as in-depth interview and focus group, to capture how public describes the situation when they are tolerating the risk, when they knew what the recommended behavior is to relieve the risk. Secondly, this study collected 1000 U.S. public sample for the survey questionnaire that are the items generated from the qualitative steps.

Objectives: Compare and contrast the number and type of interventions made by student pharmacists who participated in an adult internal medicine APPE in the US to an internal medicine APPE in Kenya.

Methods: A US-based faculty-led, four-week internal medicine APPE with interprofessional team rounding that provides care for underserved patients in an urban setting and hosts 16 students annually was compared to a faculty-led, eight-week internal medicine APPE in Kenya that hosts on average 24 students annually. Objective: The objective was to assess the intercultural learning of students enrolled in an interdisciplinary, active learning course with a focus on empathy and healthcare within an Honors College.

Methods:

This 2-credit course met twice weekly for active-learning session for 16 weeks. Topics covered included cultural dimensions, mindfulness, learning styles and four intercultural core competencies. Assignments included an intercultural development plan, on-line discussion board reflections for three required service-learning activities and completion of a Cultural Competence Badge. Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a debilitating lung disease. COPD is typically managed through pharmacological therapies however nonpharmacological therapies such as pulmonary rehabilitation can be added for treatment. Measuring a patient’s progress in a pulmonary rehabilitation program relies on pulmonary function tests, exercise testing, and patient reported outcomes. This integrative literature review seeks to identify a correlation between an expectant mothers’ lack of familial support and lower socioeconomic status and their newborn baby’s hospital admission(s). Various journals and research studies demonstrate that when mothers have added support from community doulas, both mother and baby tend to have a more positive experience.
