Reconstructionof Congenital Arhinia With Stereolithography, Kelly Spiller, Kaitlynne Pak, Lucas M. Harrison, Spencer Anderson, Steven Schmidt, Salim Mancho
Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Complete congenital arhinia is a rare defect of embryogenesis leading to the absence of the external nose and nasopharyngeal airway. In this study, we report our novel multi-staged reconstructive approach of congenital arhinia in addition to literature review. Reconstruction was achieved via several spaced operations. A nasal methyl methacrylate prosthesis was first created from a stereolithographic model for use as a temporary prosthesis and tissue expander. Lefort 1 osteotomy with cannulization was then utilized for midface advancement and nasopharyngeal airway formation. External nasal framework was constructed with bilateral conchal bowl cartilage and rib osteocartilagenous grafts. The patient was overall pleased …

Fluorescence-Guided Surgical Debridement Of Chronic Osteomyelitis Utilizing Doxycycline Bone Labeling: A Technical Trick Revived, Garrhett G. Via, David A. Brueggeman, Grant M. Slack, James M. Danias, Jennifer L. Jerele
Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The present manuscript discusses the concept of fluorescence-guided surgical debridement of chronic osteomyelitis in the orthopaedic patient based upon a two-fold mechanism, natural fluorescence of healthy bone combined with bone labeling by tetracyclines. The senior author prefers preoperative administration of oral doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for at least 1 month. The excitation source of choice is an ordinary blacklight, as this is both cost-effective and readily attainable. Intraoperatively, viable bone is noted to fluoresce a greenish hue which is then used to guide the debridement. Previous studies have demonstrated that bleeding bone is not a reliable indicator of a …

Clinical clerkships are an integral part of undergraduate medical education. Until now, clerkships have either been offered through simulation labs, didactics or in the healthcare setting dependent upon the pedagogical approach of each institutions’ curricula. Subsequent to coronavirus-2019, medical students had decreased accessibility to the aforementioned educational settings. This has provided an innovative opportunity for clerkship directors to provide the same clinical experience to students in a novel way –virtually.
Recently, the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont created a two-week virtual simulated clerkship electiveencompassing the curricula taught throughout the OB/GYN clerkship. Until now, this virtual elective …

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Water birth is child delivery that occurs in a tub of water. Water birth delivery has been offered by Miami Valley Hospital in the Family Beginnings Birth Center since 1994. The first water birth delivery that was documented in a medical journal occurred in France in 1805, which reported that the delivery resulted in a healthy baby. Water birth deliveries have been growing in popularity in the United States as mothers are interested in the possible alleged benefits of water birth including shorter labor, less pain, improved maternal experience of childbirth, and more. Although there are many potential benefits, The …

Domestic Currency As A Foreign Body, Nikhil Reddy, Long Vu, Sangeeta Agrawal
Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Foreign body ingestion is most commonly described in children, however this event can occur in adults as well. In Western countries, the most common cause of esophageal foreign bodies in adults is meat, while coins represent the most common object found in children. Symptoms of foreign body ingestion include sensation of a foreign body, chest pain, dysphagia, and vomiting. In 80% of cases, the foreign body is passed naturally. However, complications of retained esophageal foreign bodies can be life-threatening; therefore, emergent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) within 2-6 hours is recommended for ingestions of sharp objects, batteries, or those causing complete esophageal obstruction. …

Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Preeclampsia is a life-threatening, pregnancy-associated disorder characterized by the rapid development of hypertension with renal dysfunction. While preeclampsia generally occurs later in pregnancy, early-onset preeclampsia (EOPE) can occur much earlier and is usually more devastating. Early-onset preeclampsia is also associated with an increased risk of maternal cardiovascular and metabolic disease in mothers later in life and neurocognitive dysfunction in their offspring. EOPE is strongly associated with abnormal placental development and fetal growth restriction during pregnancy.

Local Wound Infiltration With Liposomal Bupivacaine Decreases Post-Cesarean Pain Scores, Avni Gupta, Justin Williams, Rose A. Maxwell, Marilyn Kindig
Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Surgical patients are routinely prescribed opioid analgesics that are strongly associated with drug overdose deaths. Liposomal bupivacaine is a long-acting local anesthetic that received FDA approval in 2011 for local surgical site infiltration to promote post-operative analgesia. This anesthetic has demonstrated an improvement in post-operative pain control in various surgical realms, indicating a decreased need for opiates and subsequently decreased risks. However, few studies have investigated its use at the time of cesarean delivery.

Disparities In Health Care Utilization And The Effect Of Family Resilience And Neighborhood Support, Temitope Omoladun, Nora L. Vish
Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Resilience, the ability to recover from adversity and turn obstacles into strengths and successes, can mitigate negative health outcomes associated with external drivers of health. Poverty, low educational attainment, insurance status and marginalized communities along with adverse childhood events are all known to be associated with poor health outcomes. Resilience is increasingly understood as a potent mitigating factor of negative health outcomes associated with toxic stress and social determinants of health. Individual resilience itself is impacted by external drivers such as family resilience and community cohesion.

Links Between Sound-Category Learning & Memory Skills In Neurotypical & Language-Learning-Disabled Adults, Katharine Ross, Mario Rene Jimenez-Cruz
Student Research Symposium
This study will examine how memory systems are intertwined with language learning by assessing participants’ different memory systems and relating memory skills to the ability to learn and categorize unfamiliar sounds.
Based upon similar work (Maddox, Ing, & Lauritzen, 2006), we hypothesize that the data will show a link between procedural memory and implicit sound categorization, and between declarative memory and explicit sound categorization. Additionally, based on the predictions of the Procedural Deficit Hypothesis (Lum, Conti-Ramsden, Page, & Ullman, 2012), we believe adults with LI will (1) show a weak connection between procedural memory and implicit sound categorization accuracy; (2) …

022— Examining P27 Expression And Quiescence In Clobetasol-Exposed Umscv-4 Vulvar Cancer Cells, Nina Mustico, Vincent Scalcione, Jani E. Lewis
GREAT Day Posters
Vulvar cancer is rare, mostly afflicting women aged 60 and older [1]. The cancer is often preceded by a common vulvar rash, lichen sclerosus, that is usually treated with the ultra-potent corticosteroid, clobetasol propionate. This treatment may, in turn, be associated with vulvar carcinogenesis. Our previous findings suggest that clobetasol is causing UMSCV-4 vulvar carcinoma cells to enter a state of quiescence. Quiescence is temporary removal from the cell cycle and can be thought of as a dormant state in which cells are not actively dividing [2]. There is growing evidence suggesting that quiescence may play a role in allowing …

289— Phenotypic Characterization Of Neurospora Crassa Fsd-1 Overexpression Strains, Hannah Smith
GREAT Day Posters
Neurospora crassa is a model filamentous fungal organism that can reproduce both asexually and sexually. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms that regulate the N. crassa female sexual development cycle. The transcription factor fsd-1 is necessary for sexual development, and fsd-1 deletion strains show delayed development of female reproductive structures and are sterile. Through previous experiments, we have been able to determine that there are three different transcripts of the fsd-1 gene, which differ by the length and intron/exon structure of their 5’ untranslated region. This project focuses on phenotypically characterizing the reproductive ability of strains overexpressing fsd-1, for …

276— Poverty And Pathogens In 19th Century Rochester, New York; Poorhouses And Other Public Housing, Tyler Haug
GREAT Day Posters
Legislation in the early 19th century resulted in the construction of public housing in the form of poorhouses and orphanages by many states to provide housing for those in need (Huddleson 2012). Reports on the conditions of these facilities within New York State show that many of them lacked adequate sources of water for washing, proper ventilation, and sanitary conditions for the inmates (Stuhler 2013). These conditions, along with crowding in many of the facilities led to the increased spread of pathogen borne diseases such as measles, typhoid fever, tuberculosis (consumption), and pneumonia. By analyzing the death records from patients …

Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) is a gene that codes for cell-surface proteins that are the basis of our bodies’ immune response, and are crucial for the combatting of pathogens or infections. For our experiment we observed two cell lines, a human Leukemia cell line (HL-60), and an epidermoid carcinoma cell line A-431. Our purpose for this experiment was to observe the effects of two drugs as well as the combination of them on the expression of HLA antigens in these cancerous cell lines. The drugs being used in this experiment are Gamma interferon, which is known to increase antigen presentation …

Many local streams of the Santa Monica Mountains are populated by the native California Newt, Taricha torosa, a species of special concern. Arroyo Sequit is one of these streams, the upper and lower portions of which are split by a culvert and the Mulholland Highway. This stream and the surrounding areas burned during the Woolsey fire of 2018. Since the fire, construction has been ongoing in and around the stream. Two years post-fire (during the summer of 2020) significantly more newts were found in the stream than years prior. A large proportion of these newts were unhealthy in appearance, …
The Influence Of Carbohydrate Ingestion On Peripheral And Central Fatigue During Exercise In Hypoxia: A Narrative Review, Erin Sinai
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Abstract
Hypoxia impairs aerobic performance by accelerating fatiguing processes. These processes may originate from sites either distal (peripheral) or proximal (central) to the neuromuscular junction, though these are not mutually exclusive. Peripheral mechanisms include decrements in muscle glycogen or fluctuations in intramuscular metabolites, whereas central responses commonly refer to reductions in central motor drive elicited by alterations in blood glucose and neurotransmitter concentrations as well as arterial hypoxemia. Hypoxia may accelerate both peripheral and central pathways of fatigue, with the level of hypoxia strongly dictating the degree and primary locus of impairment. As more people journey to hypoxic settings for …
Cystic Fibrosis In Context: A Look Into Patient Advocacy, Race, Genetics, And Big Pharma, Kayla Sloan
Cystic Fibrosis In Context: A Look Into Patient Advocacy, Race, Genetics, And Big Pharma, Kayla Sloan
Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society
Despite more people having Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) community receives more private funding, venture capital contributions, and access to participation in political discussions. This divide makes sense given the racial disparities between the mostly black SCD community and the predominately white group of patients with CF. In this paper, I look at how advocacy organizations and scientists build relationships with patients, the impact of race on the history of these advocacy groups, and how conversations about future biotech initiatives differ due to disparities in disposable capital between the two groups. SCD patients have had to combat …

Through The Frames: Public Opinion On Medicare-For-All, Yingting (Jenny) Chen
Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society
In the midst of a once in a lifetime global pandemic and the concurring 2020 elections, proponents of Medicare-For-All are offering a solution to the crises at hand: public opinion research reveals that Americans worry a great deal about healthcare access and affordability, and the public are becoming both increasingly dissatisfied with the current system and increasingly convinced that it is the responsibility of the government to provide healthcare. But Medicare-For-All currently stands on a public opinion precipice. While the public appears open to consideration of a full universal healthcare system, consensus is deeply contingent upon issue framing. I researched …

Domestic Violence In The World Of Athletics, Abbigayle L. Gesler
ONU Student Research Colloquium
There is an ongoing debate whether athletics is linked to domestic violence in professional athletes or individuals who were athletes for a long period of time. The purpose of this research is to see if being an athlete leads to domestic violence, and if so, to find ways to decrease the numbers. Professional athletes with a history of domestic violence will be researched and this could help determine if there is a link between the two. To get an idea on aggression levels in athletes, the Buss & Perry Survey was sent out via email to all Ohio Northern students, …
