A Review Of Selective Mutism In Immigrant Children [Poster], Lauren Cummings
A Review Of Selective Mutism In Immigrant Children [Poster], Lauren Cummings
Research in the Capitol
Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by a child’s lack of verbal communication in certain situations where there is an expectation of speech. Children who are diagnosed with selective mutism typically have communication or cognitive difficulties and later display higher rates of psychiatric disorders in early adolescence and adulthood. The overall prevalence of selective mutism is debated, but there is clear evidence that immigrant children are at least three times more likely to be diagnosed with selective mutism than the general population. As the number of immigrant children in the United States continues to rise, it is …

NSU REACH and IPE Day
Background: Rates of depression have been rising steadily over the last several decades with more than 264 million people affected, making it one of the top three burdens globally. The pandemic has brought on a greater risk of depression. Forty-two percent of individuals surveyed in December 2020 by the US Census Bureau reported depressive symptoms. Many factors, including poor diet quality, play a role in the development of depression during traumatic events like the pandemic. A low-quality dietary pattern has been associated with obesity, low-grade chronic inflammation, dysbiosis, increased cortisol levels and monoamine neurotransmitter deficiency. Among others, these factors have …

Using Polymicrobial Interactions To Identify Possible Novel Targets In Staphylococcus, Bacillus, And Candida, Sheyda Amirfaiz
Tennessee Posters at the Capitol [2022]
Microbes all compete for the same limited nutrients, space, and resources; therefore, they show competitive relationships. There is a component of Alcaligenes faecalis that inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive bacterium that causes many clinical diseases. We are interested in finding what genetic factors in Alcaligenes faecalis are responsible for killing Staphylococcus aureus. Transposon mutagenesis was used to interrupt certain gene segments by introducing a foreign piece of DNA into the Alcaligenes faecalis genome. By creating mutants of Alcaligenes faecalis, we were able to test these against Staphylococcus aureus to find those that can no …
Generalized Estimating Equations (Gee) Approach For Clustered Binary Data With Application To Covid-19 Treatment., Sadixa Sanjel
Generalized Estimating Equations (Gee) Approach For Clustered Binary Data With Application To Covid-19 Treatment., Sadixa Sanjel
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Clustered binary data frequently occur in epidemiology and other applied fields such as clinical trial studies, where observations within the respective samples are correlated. In such situations, the standard logistic regression method is not valid as logistic regression requires the observations to be independent of one other. This situation arises when treating COVD-19 patients. Patients from certain clusters, such as geographic areas or the same family, are highly correlated, and we need to fit the model using the GEE approach. In this paper, Standard Logistic Regression (LS), Generalized Linear Models (GENMOD), and GEE procedures have been utilized for comparison purposes. …

General Adversarial Networks In Tumor-Related Research: A Review And Agenda For Moving Forward, Andrew James Behrens, Cherie Noteboom
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Recent advances in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have led to many new variants and uses of GANs. The latest advancements have allowed researchers and practitioners to apply this technique to tumor-related problems with limited data. One of the trends in this problem domain is to develop different variants of GANs suited explicitly to particular problems. The variants of GANs are numerous but share a common characteristic of expanding the dataset by creating synthetic data from the original dataset. This paper aims to develop a research agenda through a systematic literature review that investigates practitioners' and researchers' emerging issues and current …

Adultery and Fidelity in the Lais of Marie de France
Using both literary and historical analysis, I will examine contrasting depictions of adultery and fidelity within the lais written by 12th-century poet Marie de France. A lai is a type of narrative poem, ranging in length from 118 to 1184 lines. Many of Marie de France’s lais follow the literary trope known as courtly love; however, the reader is encouraged to sympathize with different characters depending on the lai. In some lais, the reader …

SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 of which several variants have emerged, such as the B.1.351 SARS-CoV-2 variant. The Receptor Binding Domain (RBD), located within the Spike protein is an immunogenic epitope for potent neutralizing antibodies. Current mRNA vaccines encode for the Spike protein, allowing the body to build antigen-specific antibodies. Assays measuring protective antibodies are essential to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and can be used as a platform for variant screening. RBD-foldon 2.2 is a novel antigen produced by fusing RBD with the trimerization domain Fibritin from Bacteriophage T4. Its amino acid sequence is based on the original …

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: Not A Catch-All, Amanda Shulski
Capstone Showcase
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is prolonged and disproportionate neuropathic pain and inflammation which presents after surgery, fracture, or trauma to a limb. This phenomenon has been recognized in the literature since the civil war but the pathophysiology has only become clear over the last 20 years. There are no diagnostic tests for CRPS and it is a relatively rare condition with only about 20 cases in 100,000 people per year. CRPS is then under-recognized by some providers but over-diagnosed by others. Occasionally, providers use CRPS as a catch-all for unexplained pain rather than a recognized condition with specific diagnostic …

Introduction: Depression affects over 21 million adults in the United States and continues to rise, affecting more people due to the recent pandemic. Because the prevalence of this debilitating mental health disease is increasing, it is even more crucial to find additional therapeutic treatments to alleviate depressive symptoms in adults whose depression is not controlled on current anti-depressant medication or therapy. Depression has been shown to be linked to the gut-brain axis, meaning gut health is connected to our mental health. Therefore, probiotics may be effective in altering the gut microbiome, and ultimately affecting cognitive patterns in the brain.

Quality Of Life Before And After Cosmetic Surgery: Should Body Dysmorphic Disorder Be Considered An Absolute Or Relative Contraindication For Cosmetic Surgery?, Lindsay Conlisk
Capstone Showcase
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) has historically been regarded as a strong contraindication for cosmetic plastic surgery. New research now suggests that the contraindications to cosmetic surgery in patients with BDD may not be so absolute. This paper reviews diagnostic criteria, diagnostic challenges, and current standard of treatment of BDD. It then presents the idea of insight analysis in the BDD patient as a significant factor in determining if patients with BDD may or may not benefit from cosmetic surgery or procedures.

An additional thyroid treatment known as desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) is made from dried pig thyroid glands and is advertised as a “natural” alternative to Levothyroxine. Despite lack of FDA approval and studies surrounding DTE, clinicians have prescribed DTE to patients, many of whom reported relief of their symptoms. The following poster highlights the approach to the treatment of hypothyroidism with Levothyroxine and DTE and outlines …
Queer Patients: An Underserved And At Risk Population, Joshua Schmidt
Queer Patients: An Underserved And At Risk Population, Joshua Schmidt
Capstone Showcase
Queer patients in America have faced a history of discrimination as both a community and as individuals. As such, this marginalization acts as a barrier to resources, including healthcare. Clinicians must be aware of said barrier and actively work towards dismantling it within their interactions with queer patients. This article makes a case for increasing sexual health conversations in order to assess queer patients and encourage a stronger patient-provider relationship for a community that is reluctant to seek medical attention, and also more likely to participate in higher risk behaviors.
