Prevention Of Medical Device Related Pressure Injuries (Mdpris), Mauritzio Ramirez, Audrey M. Fulkerson, Mason L. Chandler

Scholars Week

Throughout our clinical rotations, we noticed many patients who had developed pressure ulcers caused by medical devices, which are often referred to as MDRPIs. We acknowledged this as a problem and decided to look into it further. We reviewed various articles to find the best practice when it comes to preventing/minimizing these injuries. We analyzed a meta-synthesis, a qualitative study, and an experimental study and used that as our research on the topic. After reviewing these articles, we will present our findings to a local hospital to make recommendations on how they can better prevent/minimize MDRPIs. In conclusion, MDRPIs are …

The Benefits Of Bedside Shift Report, Sarah Frank, Jordan Reed, Jordan Higgins Apr 2022

The Benefits Of Bedside Shift Report, Sarah Frank, Jordan Reed, Jordan Higgins

Scholars Week

The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of bedside shift report in the health care setting. This research will focus on an inpatient department, which is a 25-bed acute care unit with 4 special care beds. This department currently utilizes the SBAR method. However, this can improve when used in conjunction with bedside shift reports. The use of bedside shift report will improve communication and nurse-patient relationships, provide more patient privacy, and decrease time spent giving report. The use of bedside report may require a related intervention of patient teaching, so that the patient understands the purpose …

Benefits Of Increasing Patient Engagement In Plan Of Care, Madison Gillentine, Stephanie Phelps Apr 2022

Benefits Of Increasing Patient Engagement In Plan Of Care, Madison Gillentine, Stephanie Phelps

Scholars Week

This presentation’s focus is implementing ways to engage patients in their own plan of care during hospitalization. Patient’s presenting their needs early on during a hospital stay has been shown to improve nurse-patient communication and overall engagement. When a patient has felt that his or her specific needs have been made aware to the nursing staff, one feels more like an individual rather than a bed number. The patient will become a more active member in his or her care which leads to better outcomes and satisfaction. The more comfortable and open a patient is with the nurse about his …

Effective Communication In Dementia Patients, Morgan Loveless, Callie Hardesty

Scholars Week

Effective Communication with Dementia Patients - Abstract

Throughout every nurse’s career, one will have the experience of working with those with dementia. Patients who suffer with dementia require different approaches to communication and may have difficult interactions with healthcare workers. A barrier many nurses continue to endure is poor communication and relationships with dementia patients. Many nurses work at a very quick and stressful pace, putting a strain on many nurses’ relationships with dementia patients. Ineffective communication may lower the quality of care dementia patients receive as nurses may lack the extra time needed to effectively communicate. This can lead …

Reducing Pediatric Procedural Pain Using Virtual Reality, Emily Davis, Carmen Bandy Apr 2022

Reducing Pediatric Procedural Pain Using Virtual Reality, Emily Davis, Carmen Bandy

Scholars Week

Above all else, children require stability in their lives in order to develop a healthy perspective of the world. Feelings of instability can come from something as small as a change in schools. In the practice of pediatric medicine it is especially important to avoid these feelings of instability, which can lead children to develop healthcare-anxiety. Healthcare settings can be exceptionally emotionally taxing to children, because the children have a complete lack of control over their environment. This lack of control combined with fear and potentially pain can be incredibly distressing. While it is easy to disregard a child’s anxiety …

Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout Apr 2022

Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout

Scholars Week

This project was based on the fact that there is a severe nursing shortage happening in the United States. On average, nurses can have four to eight patients at one time which makes a twelve hour shift almost unbearable due to the stress of keeping all of the patients alive and satisfied with the care they are receiving. During the pandemic, staffing shortages have become one of the main issues faced by healthcare workers across the nation. Due to the staffing shortages and COVID-19 precautions, nurses have not only been taking on more patients but also have increased their workload …

Social Determinants And Sexual Health In Adolescents, Makaylee Kempema, Camryn Janssen, Haley Evans, Bekah Horstman

Celebration of Research

After discovering a noticeable need for sexual health education and disease prevention for adolescents in the Promise Community Health Center community, we as a group set to work on researching how to address and combat this need. Ten articles pertaining to this issue highlighted four main factors in adolescent sexual health: practices and barriers to adolescents seeking information about sexual health, how they can most effectively learn about sexual health, parental influence on adolescent sexuality, and the healthcare provider’s effect on an adolescent’s sexual health visit. With these findings the project was able to identify interventions that Promise Community Health …

Importance Of Patient Bodyweight In Hospitals, Abby Petersen, Hannah Van Iperen, Brittany Berry, Karie Stamer Apr 2022

Importance Of Patient Bodyweight In Hospitals, Abby Petersen, Hannah Van Iperen, Brittany Berry, Karie Stamer

Celebration of Research

Ten research articles that included information about patient weights, weight errors, and importance on weight in relation to nutritional status, fluid assessment, and medication doses were reviewed to create a policy. The results of the articles conclude that within healthcare, the facilities are not doing enough in making sure each patient is being weighed during their hospital stay. Nurses and other patient care staff should be properly educated and trained on how to obtain body weights to reduce the instances of inaccuracy.

Addiction Generation: Stimulant Abuse In College Students, Jemma Kenobbie Apr 2022

Addiction Generation: Stimulant Abuse In College Students, Jemma Kenobbie

Celebration of Research

Illicit use of prescription stimulants has come to the attention of clinicians, school administration, and the judicial system in recent years. Illicit stimulant use is defined as the use of prescription stimulants without a legitimate prescription or using stimulants inconsistent with the prescribed treatment plan, including diversion and inappropriate administration methods. These prescriptions have been known to cause serious side effects when taken incorrectly, yet their popularity as “study buddies” among college students has risen. The most current research has found that the percentage of undergraduate students abusing stimulants ranges from 8-43%, with an average of 17% of students abusing …

Cultural Sensitivity - The Impact Of A Three-Week Physical Therapy Internship In Mexico, Kailey Heemskerk, Paul Bartlett Ed.D

Celebration of Research

In this study, we examined if there was a change in cultural sensitivity as a result of a three-week, non-credit bearing internship in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and, if so, what factors may have contributed to this change. We hypothesized there would be a significant difference in overall intercultural sensitivity growth and in each of the five constructs of intercultural sensitivity. The students completed a pre- and post-Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) survey and three open-ended questions at the completion of their internship. A paired T-test found overall mean scores to be significantly higher for the post-test as compared to the pre-test …

Optimizing Vernix Caseosa In Neonates, Shaeli Herman Apr 2022

Optimizing Vernix Caseosa In Neonates, Shaeli Herman

Celebration of Research

Vernix caseosa is a “white, creamy, naturally occurring biofilm covering the skin of the fetus during the last trimester of pregnancy” (Singh & Archana, 2008). While there are many variations of birth plans that one may choose regarding their pregnancy, the health and wellness benefits of leaving the vernix caseosa on the neonate immediately following birth can be substantial. This is especially important when considering the thermal needs of a neonate along with the risk that could occur if those thermal needs are not met. The vernix caseosa, which forms around the twenty first week of gestation, also serves as …

Climate Change And Infectious Diseases, Brennan Haggerty, Jake Lynott, Carsyn Hamstra, Taylor Mccarthy

Celebration of Research

The impact of climate change on human health is a relatively new topic within the field of research. Several research studies indicate rises in temperature, droughts, increase in vector-borne diseases, and heatwaves are becoming more prevalent. Despite the fluctuations in climate, little information is being conveyed to the public regarding the effects of such on human health. This review sought to identify and assess what is currently understood about climate change and the impacts of it on human health. A literature review was designed and conducted using EBSCOhost and Worldcat. Out of all the articles identified, ten articles met the …

Student Academic Conference

Studies have configured immunological responses to Aspergillus fumigatus in mice, leading to advanced understandings. However, the comparisons of the immune responses between juvenile (younger than 6 weeks) male and female C57BL/6J mice after A. fumigatus exposure, remains uninvestigated. In this study, we intranasally inoculated 3 week old male and female mice with Aspergillus fumigatus spores dilution of 2 106spores per 40 l. They were exposed to the allergen once a week for 8 consecutive weeks and euthanized on day 28 post the last inoculation. As compared to our last report, we increased the sample size for each group in this …
