Background: Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is a rare disorder characterized by the fibrous proliferation of the skin, bone, muscle, and viscera that usually presents at birth, or soon after. Although IM is a benign condition, significantly higher morbidity and mortality have been reported when the viscera is involved. This case report is of a 6-week-old female who presented with poor feeding along with subcutaneous nodules that were diagnosed as IM. Upper and lower endoscopy were performed for worsening feeding intolerance showing marked nodularity throughout the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including partial obstruction of the proximal duodenum by biopsy-proven myofibromas, confirming visceral IM …

A Case Of Fibrous Hamartoma In Term Neonate, Elizabeth Perry
Research Days
Case report abstract: Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a rare, benign lesion characterized as a tumor of myofibroblastic origin that has characteristic features of triphasic histology. FHI was first described in 1956 by Reye and formally named by Enzinger in 1965 (1, 2). The lesion is defined as a hamartoma due to the histologic presentation of disorganized mesenchymal, fibrous, and adipose tissue with absence of mitotic figures; this combination of derived tissue without evidence of anaplasia is diagnostic for FHI. These lesions typically arise as a single, solitary mass, are most commonly located on the extremities, trunk, sacrum, or …

Increased Risk Of Mental Illness Due To Epigenetic Alteration Of The Nr3c1 Gene After Early Life Adversity., Erin Mccue
Thinking Matters Symposium
Early life adversity (ELA), such as malnutrition, abuse, and economic disparity, is an issue commonly seen in adolescents, a group already facing increased risk for stress-related disorders. This review of current literature reveals that gestational stress exposure, as well as variations in maternal care during postnatal development, cause latent effects on the epigenome, specifically impacting the glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) encoded by the NR3C1 gene. GRs bind to glucocorticoids to regulate the body’s neuroendocrine stress response. However, in those with a history of ELA, the number of GRs is reduced, generating dysregulation within the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Rodent studies are utilized …

Mourning The Marathon: Black Men Rappers, Homicide Survivorship Bereavement, And The Rap Tribute Of Nipsey Hussle, Melvin L. Williams, Justin K. Winley, Justin Causey
Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference
Eritrean-American rapper Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom’s murder represented a cultural cataclysmic event that startled the hip-hop community and triggered previous memories of Black men’s homicidal deaths in rap and Black American urban communities. Nipsey Hussle’s death inspired touching rap tribute songs by Black men rappers, who sought to commemorate his cultural legacy and express their bereavement pains as homicide survivors. Rap tribute songs occupy a significant history, as rappers historically employed them to honor hip-hop’s fallen soldiers, communicate their homicide survivorship bereavement processes, and speak about social perils in the Black community. Framed by critical race (CRT) and gender role …

Exchange Protein Directly Activated By Camp (Epac1) Protects Human Endothelial Cells From Tumor Necrosis Factor-⍺ (Tnf-⍺) Induced Cell Death, Anh Luu, Abigail Carpenter, Rosetta Tolley
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Millions of people are affected by diseases involving inflammatory states such as sepsis. Sepsis is associated with elevated tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-⍺) which mediates inflammation. Excessive TNF-⍺ contributes to death of endothelial cells (EC) with subsequent disruption of vascular endothelial function. Exchange Factor Directly Activated by cAMP (EPAC1) is a cyclic-AMP (cAMP) sensor that regulates multiple EC functions. We hypothesized that EPAC1 activation affects the response of EC to TNF-a. Microvascular EC were pretreated for 45 minutes with 100 mM 8-pCPT-2′-O-Me-cAMP (8-CPT, specific EPAC1 activator) or 10 mM forskolin (adenylyl cyclase activator that increases cAMP), then exposed to 5 …
