Development Of Medical Alert Cards Using Structured Data To Assist In The Management Of Children With Anorectal Malformation, Cloaca, And Cloacal Exstrophy, Ninad Prasade

Research Days

Introduction: Anorectal malformations (ARM), including cloaca and cloacal exstrophy, are a rare collection of congenital disorders of the distal hindgut resulting in lifelong anatomic and functional impairments. Children with ARM may often have other congenital anomalies in the VACTERL association (vertebral, anorectal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal, limb), leading to anatomic variations and prior surgeries that require consideration in diagnosis and management. Patients with these conditions may have multiple presentations to the healthcare system. Understanding emergencies specific to these conditions can enable patients' families and providers to quickly recognize important anatomic variations and initiate care management.

Aim: Our study aimed to …

Perspectives Of Special Educators And Paraprofessionals On Person-Centered Planning Tools For People Who Use Aac, Samantha K. Stidham, Brandon Eddy, Andryce Andres

Student Research Symposium

Person-centered planning (PCP) is an intervention approach for people experiencing disability. This often results in a document outlining the individual’s preferences in their care, life goals, and transitions. Some people with disabilities communicate using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), which supplements or compensates for impairments in speech and language production often involving the use of external communication tools. Current PCP tools may not fulfill the needs of people who use AAC (PWUAAC) due to limited focus on supporting communication. No PCP tools yet exist specifically designed for PWUAAC. The purpose of this study was to inform the design of a …

Research Day

Cerebellar ataxias are a group of neurodegenerative disorders associated with impaired cerebellar circuitry leading to loss of motor coordination and balance. Recent studies using animal models have shown that transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) could be an effective therapy for the treatment of cerebellar ataxia. The sole output of the cerebellar cortex is from the axons of Purkinje cells, which allows the cerebellum to influence motor behavior via the cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathway. However, the influence of tDCS on Purkinje cells remains unknown. In this study, we used a customized whole-cell patch-clamp chamber, which allowed for patch-clamp recordings from Purkinje cells during tDCS. …
