Meniscal injuries are a common result of trauma to the knee. The main two surgical treatments available are partial meniscectomy or full meniscectomy due to the lack of blood flow in that region. These two treatments cause long-term complications such as pain, lack of mobility, and/or osteoarthritis.
To avoid these complications, researchers have looked at placing collagen meniscal implantations (CMI) into the knee. The collagen implantation is composed of type I collagen from bovine Achilles tendon and was infused with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) to trigger cellular growth. Patients were grouped into cohorts based on tears in the lateral or medial meniscus …

Photodynamic Therapy For The Treatment Of Acne Vulgaris, Luis Barragan Pa-S, Brent Chambers Pa-S, Anneke Weg Pa-S
Celebration of Research
Acne vulgaris is a common condition affecting populations and age groups in varying severities worldwide. Traditional approaches to treating acne vulgaris have long consisted of the use of retinoids and antimicrobials. With high prevalence rates of acne vulgaris and its growing resistance to antibiotics, it is important to find alternative treatment options to mitigate this complication. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been successfully used in other disease processes and has been recently introduced for the treatment of acne vulgaris. PDT’s proposed mechanisms include inhibiting Propionibacterium acnes proliferation and promoting healthy tissue growth by altering gene expression of P. acnes and reducing …

Celebration of Research
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disease characterized by abdominal pain in relation to altered bowel habits. Theories regarding the mechanisms underlying IBS include poor absorption of foods containing fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs), leading to a build-up of gas, and an altered intestinal barrier due to the overabundance of pathogenic bacteria. A diet low in FODMAPs and adjuvant therapy with probiotics may reduce symptoms in some individuals. This presentation examines the efficacy of a low FODMAP diet, supplementation with probiotics, and a combination of the two in the treatment of IBS in adults.

Enhancement Of Deep Learning Protein Structure Prediction, Ruoming Shen
Enhancement Of Deep Learning Protein Structure Prediction, Ruoming Shen
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Protein modeling is a rapidly expanding field with valuable applications in the pharmaceutical industry. Accurate protein structure prediction facilitates drug design, as extensive knowledge about the atomic structure of a given protein enables scientists to target that protein in the human body. However, protein structure identification in certain types of protein images remains challenging, with medium resolution cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) protein density maps particularly difficult to analyze. Recent advancements in computational methods, namely deep learning, have improved protein modeling. To maximize its accuracy, a deep learning model requires copious amounts of up-to-date training data.

Review Of Nighttime Temperature Effects On Long-Term Health Condition Through Sleep Studies, Sydnie Matkins
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Over the past 40 years, there has been increasing interest in human sleep quality and duration. This nonsystematic review looked at over 80 peer-reviewed papers on the association among sleep, temperature, and long-term health conditions. Generally, warmer temperatures lend to poorer sleep quality, and poor sleep quality lend to mental illness and a higher risk of coronary heart disease and mortality. Future research should be to conduct a study that relies more on health records rather than questionnaires to accurately map current and future health quality.

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
The present study assessed whether trainees display similar nonverbal and paraverbal behaviors when interacting with a simulated (SP) and virtual patient (VP). Sixty second slices of time following four interactions were rated for the presence and frequency of three nonverbal and paraverbal behaviors. Results revealed that students exhibited fewer behaviors in the VP interaction, possibly due to differences social inhibition or fidelity between the two formats.

Influence Of Ground Reaction Forces And Joint Velocities On Kicking Velocity, Miah L. Busse, Maggie L. Plouff, Brady Ferguson
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Introduction: Kicking is a vital component in the game of soccer. One major factor that influences the success of a scoring attempt is ball velocity. Ground reaction force (GRF) and joint velocities of the lower extremities are variables of interest for increasing kicking velocity. Previous studies have shown exercise programs used to strengthen the muscles used in kicking have been successful in increasing kicking velocity (Manolopoulos, et al., 2013).[GJR1] To date, no known studies have analyzed the specific relationship between GRF, joint velocity and kicking velocity.
Purpose: The goal of this pilot study was to analyze the influence of ground …

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
Focused attention is when an individual is completely absorbed in a task or attending to an object. This concept has been connected to learning and other cognitive skills. The Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) is a tool used to quantify change in gross motor skills over time. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between total focused attention time and GMFM scores in early sitting infants. 26 infants, all between 6-8 months old, were given 3 different types of toys each for 90 seconds and were videotaped while they explored. Videos were later coded using Datavyu, a …
Combating Long-Term Care Isolation Through Healing Touch, Veronica J. Butts
Combating Long-Term Care Isolation Through Healing Touch, Veronica J. Butts
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Loneliness is defined as feelings of disconnectedness, lack of belonging, and perceived isolation that can manifest as a physical or psychological state. In long-term care facilities, this sentiment can develop into social isolation in which residents are disconnected from family, removed from familiar environments, and suffer from various cognitive conditions that cause them to socially withdraw. Various clinical studies seek to identify the connection between isolation, loneliness, and lack of human touch with worsening health conditions and outcomes, determining that there is a correlation between this feeling of discontent. To combat this, healing touch has been a rising topic of …
