Modeling Area Deprivation Index Using Non-Gaussian Fixed Rank Kriging, Edwin Kutsushi Mutimba

The Area Deprivation Index (ADI) plays a vital role in identifying and addressing socioeconomic challenges, forming the basis for fair public health policies and resource distribution. This study explores the capabilities of both linear and non-linear statistical models, with a focus on Fixed Rank Kriging (FRK), to analyze ADI using data on U.S. Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). The model’s predictive capability is compared with Generalized Additive Models (GAM) and Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS). The non-gaussian FRK provides a more comprehensive spatial analysis, albeit with higher computational requirements.

PROBLEM: Emergency department (ED) utilization is a measure the effectiveness of the department and an indication of the availability of primary care in the community. The ED of a given healthcare system can be overwhelmed with patients seeking both urgent and non-urgent care, especially in rural and underserved communities. Non-urgent care accounts for over a half of all visits in most EDs. Purpose : Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common form of inherited retinal disease with ~1:5000 people affected worldwide. The substitution of Proline to Histidine (P23H) at position 23 in the rhodopsin protein is the most common form of adRP in North America. We have shown that treating a transgenic P23H human RHO pig model of adRP (TgP23H hRHO) with a gene-editing meganuclease Rho 1-2, recovers rod structure and restores rod function. College is a demanding transitional time where students are experiencing new friendships and personal growth. During this time, mental health issues can surface which impact emotional well-being. Studies have shown that dogs reduce stress, anxiety, depression, encourage exercise, lower blood pressure, and raise oxytocin and dopamine levels (American Heart Association, 2021). Eastern Michigan University introduced their own facility dog Tinker, a two-year-old golden retriever. Since Fall 2024, she has provided emotional comfort and relief to students and the campus community. Surveying results show Tinker’s impact on stress management and ability to regulate emotions for EMU students.

Male infertility impacts up to 15% of men and contributes significantly to worldwide infertility.1 A multifaceted issue with etiologies from before, after or during spermatogenesis. It includes hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis dysfunction, genetic abnormalities, congenital malformations, systemic illnesses and environmental factors.2 The evaluation of male infertility considers contributing factors and interconnections with broader health issues. Major depressive disorder impacts approximately 14.5 million U.S. adults, with about 30% of cases classified as treatment-resistant depression. Traditional antidepressant therapies, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, often have delayed onset and limited efficacy, leaving a substantial portion of patients without adequate relief. Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) has been proposed to enhance orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) by stimulating bone remodeling. This study evaluates the effect of i-PRF on space closure rates, anchor loss, and salivary biomarkers (ALP, AST, and LDH) during orthodontic retraction.

Phenomenology is integrated to address clinical epistemic concerns, particularly the limitations of conventional vision tests in fully capturing perception and the lived experiences of vision loss. This poster highlights current and updated guidelines for chemical and mechanical prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing major and minor orthopedic surgery. Existing and new potential therapies were reviewed, as well as an analysis into the lack of high-quality risk-prediction score calculators to improve personalization of prophylaxis regimens. Alongside a summary of existing and potential new prophylaxis protocols, a call to action to improve validity of said risk score calculators so as to improve patient outcomes and personalized medicine is made.
