Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is a neurologic insult that impacts a child’s functioning across domains. Risk factors include previous concussion history, force of impact, and gender. Current research regarding return to school following a brain injury suggests the need for accommodations in a number of areas of learning including changes in schedule, reduced exposure to screens and text, limitations to classroom expectations for tasks such as reading and note-taking, and modified testing. A one-size-fits-all approach to accommodations is problematic as recovery rates vary widely. Studies have also suggested that mood symptoms are comorbid with concussion recovery. Mitochondria may be a principle source of oxidative stress causing MI/R injury. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for electron transport in normal mitochondria, has antioxidant properties but its bioavailability is likely reduced due to oxidative stress during MI/R. Coenzyme Q1 (CoQ1) is a derivative of CoQ10, but is a more potent antioxidant than CoQ10 due to a shorter isoprene chain. We hypothesize that CoQ1 will exhibit better cardioprotective effects during MI/R. CoQ1 (MW=250 g/mol; 20 μM, n=5) and CoQ10 (MW=863 g/mol; 20 μM, n=5) were given at reperfusion in isolated rat hearts subjected to I (30 min)/R (45 min). We …

It’s known that PMA is a broad-spectrum PKC activator that augments SO release in PMNs viaNADPH oxidase activation. It was shown that PKC delta (δ) negatively regulates PMN elastase release which suggests that PKC δ may also negatively regulate PMN NADPH oxidase SO release. To test the hypothesis, we altered PKC δ activity using selective cell permeable PKC δ activator, inhibitor peptides, and rottlerin, another type of PKC δ inhibitor. We predict that PKC δ activation would attenuate PMA-induced PMN SO release, whereas PKC δ inhibition would augment the response. Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a category of several types of manual techniques used by osteopathic physicians. According to the osteopathic tradition, structure and function are intimately related. This project examined the relationship between shoulder structure and function in an osteopathic framework, with a specific goal to understand how the structure of the acromion affects the development of shoulder injuries. For the first part of this project, cadaveric dissections were performed and muscle diameters were taken of structures within the subacromial space. Building on our presentation at MODVIS 2015, we continue in our quest to discover a functional, computational, explanation of the relationship among visual attention, interpretation of visual stimuli, and eye movements, and how these produce visual behavior. Here, we focus on one component, how selection is accomplished for the next fixation. The popularity of saliency map models drives the inference that this is solved; we suggested otherwise at MODVIS 2015. Here, we provide additional empirical and theoretical arguments. Classical and Hellenistic Greece were known to be a hub of scientific research. However, the potential for scientific discovery was limited by dominating religious beliefs. Advancements in the study of human anatomy were inhibited by religious taboos that prevented the practice of human dissection. These taboos took hold of Greek society, with a consequence of exile to anyone who violated them. The exception however, is in Hellenistic Alexandria under the rule of the Ptolemaic Kings, Soter and Philadelphus. During pregnancy, women typically see a disruption in sleep and an abnormal amount of abdominal fat accumulation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between sleep disturbance, quality or quantity and the accumulation of abdominal fat during pregnancy. METHODS: First-time pregnant women (N=25) were recruited from a local OB/GYN office. Participants (aged 27.2±4.5 years) visited the exercise physiology laboratory at KSU to obtain body composition measurements and sleep data between 17 and 21 weeks gestation. Overall sleep disturbance, quality, and quantity were assessed through a sleep disturbance survey. Six subjects failed the validity …

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) are the largest family of cell surface proteins, found in organisms from yeast to humans. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a widespread pathogen that is particularly skilled at evading immune detection and defense mechanisms, largely due to extensive co-evolution with its host’s immune system. One aspect of this co-evolution involves the acquisition of four virally encoded GPCR homologs: US27, US28, UL33 and UL78. In this research, phylogenetic analysis was used to investigate the origins of the US27 and US28 genes, which are adjacent in the viral genome.
