Category: Clinical Concerns for Practicing APRNs

Purpose/Goal Statement: Evaluate the effectiveness of group education in improving knowledge and self-reported compliance.

Clinical Question: In hypertensive patients, does increased education, including group educational seminars, increase knowledge and therefore self-reported compliance?

Methods: 45-minute group seminar designed to increase knowledge and promote compliance. Pre- and post-tests administered to evaluate effectiveness. Pre- and post-test means were calculated using Microsoft Excel. Eight-week follow up phone calls were made to evaluate self-reported compliance.

Findings: Mean pre-test score was 69%. Mean post-test score was 98%. A 29% …

An estimated 177,622 Iranians have suffered an injury resulting in amputation. Prosthetic devices in Iran are scarce due to wealth disparity, wars, and lack of vital resources. Without prosthetic devices, amputees face unemployment, homelessness, a lowered self-esteem and cannot fully participate in society. I examined economic factors influencing the distribution of prosthetic devices and reviewed articles that focus on healthcare costs, distributions and services, relationships between Iran and other countries, etiology of amputation to find a solution for the prosthetic distribution issues. Treating Alzheimer’s disease, especially through non-pharmaceutical means, has become increasingly important over the past few decades. I examined the use of melody, rhyme, and rhythm as encoding mechanisms to aid in the retrieval of long term semantic information by juxtaposing previous experiments in the field. Melody, rhyme, and rhythm provide an organizational structure to facilitate the encoding of information. Specifically, chunking, the grouping of smaller units into larger ‘chunks’, helps facilitate long term encoding in patients, and is the byproduct of the organizational structure of a text. Studies reveal that low income is a significant risk factor for depression and only roughly 25% of children with mental illnesses receive adequate help, the majority of which comes from schools. This study establishes guidelines for depression intervention programs in low-income high schools through a literature review of current practices. This study found that a multi-layered approach with screening, universal education, and high-risk intervention is most effective. Screening should be conducted with a modified PHQ-a test and timely clinical interviews by school psychologists. Glaucoma patients only can instill glaucoma eye drops. This results in 1-7% absorption of the medication. Surveys show that patients forget to take their medication and have difficulty inserting their eye drops. Researchers at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary have developed latanoprost drug-dispensing hydrogel soft contact lenses that dispense the drug to help facilitate the process. However, some glaucoma patients do not respond to latanoprost because they have uveitic glaucoma or do not want to experience latanoprost’s ocular side effects. Context: Subconcussive head impacts receive increased attention for brain health. It remains unknown if game type affects frequency or magnitude of head impacts. Objective: Examine relationship between magnitude and frequency of head impacts during regular and postseason soccer games. Setting: Collegiate soccer fields. Participants: 17 women’s soccer athletes (height=163.68±4.99 cm, age=19.88±1.05 years, mass=61.12±5.00 kg) participated in 19 regular and 9 postseason games during 2014 season. Main Outcome Measures: Game type. XPatch sensor (Seattle, WA) collected linear (g) and rotational (deg/sec2) accelerations, Incidence rates (IR) and incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) determining frequency differences. Problem: Most Iowans die from chronic diseases, or diseases developed over time, often influenced through behavioral choice. The top three, heart disease, cancer, and lower respiratory diseases account for over half of all death in Iowa and in the nation. However, most public health funding focuses on infectious disease and treatment, leaving little or nothing for primary prevention of chronic diseases.

Hydrostatic weighing with head above water at full lung capacity has been tested although not accepted as an alternative method. According to the World Health Organization, diarrheal disease is the second top killer of children under five years of age (U5), claiming around 760,000 young children’s lives every year, and 88% of diarrheal disease is attributed to unsafe water supply, inadequate sanitation and hygiene. The humanitarian aid organization, World Vision, launched community-based water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) project in 76 Area Development Programs (ADPs) for 506,019 target U5 population across Southern Africa Region (SAR): Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia in 2010.

Background: Growth in pharmaceutical expenditures for diabetes outpaced growth in diabetes prevalence. Prescribers accepting gifts and meals from pharmaceutical companies have been linked with higher prescription rates and costs[1]. Pharmaceutical marketing to these prescribers and patients often promotes newer, more expensive drugs, such as the GLP-1 analogues and SGL-2 inhibitors. These two drug classes are more expensive but no more effective than metformin,[2] the recommended first-line treatment for diabetes, and the oldest and cheapest available treatment. We investigated how cost of diabetes treatment was affected by marketing practices in the District of Columbia.
