Increasingly clinical doctors desire and need to publish their research. As a result, the issue of open access is moving into the clinical setting. This presents unique challenges to Health Science Librarians. In addition to working alone and with very limited library budgets, Health Science Librarians must stretch their current role to include becoming an open access expert in order to educate hospital administrators and library users, while giving proper advice and guidance to authors within their institutions. Effects Of Everyday Stressors On Blood Glucose And Heart Rate In A Type 1 Diabetic, Nicolette Kimker

The study measured the everyday effects of acute stressors on blood glucose

(BG) levels and heart rate (HR) levels in a female, 21 years of age, who

is a type 1 diabetic. The hypothesis is that type 1 diabetics who are faced

with an acute stressor will have an abnormally elevated BG level and an

increased HR for a prolonged period of time and that these variables will

be positively correlated. BG levels and HR was recorded for over three days

for a baseline and then were recorded at the time of acute stressors and

In many cases, operant learning procedures follow regimented methods of

measurable behaviors such as responsiveness to cues and reactions to the

consequences that follow. Recently it has been recognized that subjective

traits such as feelings or disposition still affect the responsiveness of the

subject and must be taken into consideration. However, certain techniques

such as those described in Polyvagal Theory could be the key to affording

receptive and compliant behaviors in the subject, even when they previously

were noncompliant. Proposed by Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory is

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is available to couples at risk for

transmitting inherited genetic disorders to offspring. Utilized with in-vitro

fertilization (IVF), PGD affords couples in which both partners are carriers for

the same autosomal recessive condition the opportunity to have embryos

tested in the preimplantation stage, and subsequently select unaffected

embryos for transfer. As carriers are typically unaffected, PGD for recessive

conditions presents some unique considerations, namely in identification of

carrier status of both partners. This study examined the perceived benefits

We present the performance gains of an openMP implementation of a fully adaptive nonlinear full multigrid (FMG) algorithm to simulate three-dimensional multispecies desmoplastic tumor growth on computer systems of varying processing capabilities. The FMG algorithm is applied to solve a recently published thermodynamic mixture model that uses a diffuse interface approach with fourth-order reaction-advection-diffusion PDEs (Cahn-Hilliard-type equations) that are coupled, nonlinear, and numerically stiff. The model includes multiple cell species and extracellular matrix (ECM), with adhesive and elastic energy contributions in chemical potential terms, as well as including blood and lymphatic vessels represented as continuous vasculatures. The cost of bringing a drug to market depends on how quickly a candidate drug can be “discovered” and evaluated to ensure safety and effectiveness. In this work we develop a method for predicting whether a given drug and protein compound will “bind.” Our aim is to select a set of features to predict drug-protein interactions.

This study focuses on kinases. Kinase inhibitors are the largest class of new cancer therapies. Selective inhibition is difficult due to high sequence similarity, leading to off-target interactions and side-effects. Pictured here human c-SRC.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common complication of childbirth, affecting 11-20% of women who give birth each year. Women suffering from PPD may experience feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and anxiety related to birth, and may think of suicide or harm towards their baby. Nutrition plays a key role in the onset, severity, and duration of general depression. Although nutritional deficiencies can be prevalent among all Americans, they disproportionately affect low-income individuals. There is currently a knowledge gap regarding postpartum depression causation in low-income women.
