Physicians demonstrate an insufficiency in medical nutrition training, yet are expected to deliver nutrition counseling to patients with chronic disease. There is a clear understanding that unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (e.g. smoking, physical inactivity, poor diet) contribute to morbidity and mortality across the nation and worldwide. A preventable contribution to millions of deaths annually, which can be mitigated via brief nutrition and lifestyle counseling. Primary care is the ideal venue to deliver nutrition education and counseling, with a majority of all Americans regularly visiting their physician offices. Backpacks: A Program For Improving Children’S Readiness To Learn And Family Food Security, Lauri Wright

An increasing gap has been seen between the government food assistance programs and need. One program filling the deficit is Feeding America’s BackPack Program. The Backpack provides nutritious food to children to eat on the weekends when they may not have access to an adequate amount of food. This study evaluated the impact of the program on children’s food security, readiness to learn, and behavioral and mental health. A mixed methodology was utilized. Results showed improved food security and increased readiness to learn among participants. BackPack may be an effective program for meeting the gap in food assistance.

Objective:

To evaluate student perceptions of a service-learning experience for potential implementation in the curriculum.

Method:

A new 3-week intensive elective course was piloted in the Spring of 2017 at Purdue University College of Pharmacy. Seven third professional year students were included in the pilot and were divided into three groups. Each group of 2-3 students was assigned to one of 3 predetermined community partner sites. Students were taught how to perform a needs assessment and then designed a project targeted to improve safety at their site. There are 6 million people living with HIV; 70% reside in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Furthermore, 1.1 million deaths occur due to opportunistic infections (OIs) that can be minimized with antiretroviral therapy. In Kenya, Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is an especially debilitating OI that presents with dermatologic lesions; magnifying the stigma that patients with HIV face physically and psychosocially. Dermatology research is underway to determine the effectiveness of an unna boot (medicated, layered compression dressing) to speed the healing of these lesions with anecdotal success. Street youth in Eldoret, Kenya are at a high risk of experiencing psychological conditions like Post-traumatic Stress Disorder with contributing factors including homelessness, an unstable family structure, and exposure to alcoholism and drug abuse in parent figures. Based on genomic data from the Pediatric Precision Genomics Program at Riley Hospital as well as published studies, many recurrent pediatric solid tumors express mutant forms of the tumor suppressor protein p53. p53’s central role in cell cycle arrest and apoptotic pathways has been well studied. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and Ewing’s sarcoma are two cancers with low 5-year survival rates in recurrent pediatric populations. GBM is the most aggressive type of brain tumor, with survival rates that range from 15-30% in pediatrics. Ewing’s is a rare cancer of the bone and the soft tissue around the bones with a 70% …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the CNS that leads to physical disability, cognitive impairment, and other symptoms associated with neurological damage. MS is a T-cell mediated demyelinating disease with a male to female ratio of 1:3. The molecular mechanisms of sex differences in MS are not well understood. This sexual dimorphism is reflected in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a murine model of MS in SJL/J mice. Previous studies show sex-specific differences in immune production and response to IL-33 which promotes a protective Th2 response to EAE in male mice. Current studies on three popular natural supplements (Cranberry, Saw Palmetto, and Magnesium) were analyzed. Cranberry and Saw Palmetto are the two most purchased natural supplements. Magnesium has relatively new applications, and less disagreement about its effectiveness in these applications.

It is widely known that increased level of neuronal activity stimulates an inflammatory response in the brain and periphery tissue. A coordinated activity of the NVU cells such as microglia and astrocytes is necessary to regulate local inflammation in brain tissue. Recently, there is growing evidence that the NVU to be affected by the loss of Blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and permeability in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. AD and ALS) as a result from the long-term effects of neuroinflammation1 . This review aimed to assess whether the George Washington University medical, pre-clinical curriculum met any of the Association of American Medical College’s (AAMC) 30 professional competencies to improve health care for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), gender nonconforming, or born with disorders of sex development (DSD).

Methods:

Relevant sessions were reviewed based on instructors’ PowerPoint slides, audio recording of sessions (when available), assigned pre-session material, and notes taken by a student. Content and objectives from each session were mapped to corresponding AAMC competencies, and each competency was qualitatively graded as completely met, partially met, or unmet.
