Isolated Temazepam Overdose: A Unique Case Of An Unresponsive Female, Eric Doane May 2023

Isolated Temazepam Overdose: A Unique Case Of An Unresponsive Female, Eric Doane

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Cases of acute overdose presenting to the emergency department pose a great challenge given that history can sometimes be limited or at times be inaccurate. While naloxone is routinely given in the field to help reduce opiate’s sedating effects, the routine use of flumazenil has not been routinely adopted in cases of benzodiazepine overdose. This is because, unlike naloxone, there are many medications that act on the GABA receptor, and flumazenil is only specific for binding to the benzodiazepine/GABA receptor. This can lead to an unmasking of other medications that may be co-ingested that also effect the GABA receptor leading …

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Given the recently renewed interest in using psychedelics to aid in the treatment of psychological disorders, we aimed to examine the impact of psilocybin, a 5-HT2A agonist, on learning and memory in rodents. Previous work has demonstrated that psilocybin and other 5-HT2A agonists can enhance fear conditioning, fear extinction, and novel object recognition (NOR). Thus, we predicted that low doses of psilocybin would enhance inhibitory avoidance (IA) and NOR memory. In the first experiment, adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent step-through IA training (involving 0.45, 0.65, or 1 mA scrambled footshock) and were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with …

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Pharmacotherapy for stress-related psychological disorders remains inadequate. Patients who are treated with conventional pharmacological agents frequently report negligeable symptom reduction, and, in most cases, less than 50% experience full remission. Clearly, there is a need for additional pharmaceutical research into both established and novel approaches to alleviate these conditions. Over the past several years, there has been a renewed interest in the use of psychedelics to aid in the treatment of psychological disorders. Several studies have reported promising results in patients with major depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following treatment with psychedelic agents such as lysergic acid …

More than 25% of seniors will fall each year due to modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors. The result is three million emergency department visits and 50 billion dollars in annual healthcare costs.1 Effective falls prevention is complex and needs collaboration from all members of the healthcare team. The best national, state and local strategies individualize patient safety from all sources of harm.2 Multifactorial interventions use health and mobility reviews to reduce the rate of falls and educate older adults.3 The CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries (STEADI) and ASCP/NCOA’s Falls Risk Reduction Toolkit are examples of national programs that …

Combating Long-Term Care Isolation Through Healing Touch, Veronica J. Butts Apr 2023

Combating Long-Term Care Isolation Through Healing Touch, Veronica J. Butts

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Loneliness is defined as feelings of disconnectedness, lack of belonging, and perceived isolation that can manifest as a physical or psychological state. In long-term care facilities, this sentiment can develop into social isolation in which residents are disconnected from family, removed from familiar environments, and suffer from various cognitive conditions that cause them to socially withdraw. Various clinical studies seek to identify the connection between isolation, loneliness, and lack of human touch with worsening health conditions and outcomes, determining that there is a correlation between this feeling of discontent. To combat this, healing touch has been a rising topic of …

Lung cancer is the cancer of the lung's epithelial cells typically characterized by difficult breathing, chest pain, blood-stained coughs, headache, and weight loss. If left unmanaged, lung cancer can spread to other body parts. While several treatment methods exist for managing lung cancer, exploring natural plant sources for developing therapeutics offers great potential in complementing different treatment approaches. In this study, we concentrated on inhibiting the mutated Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS) by targeting an associated protein (Phosphodiesterase 6δ) to which KRAS form complexes. We evaluated bioactive compounds from Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L), adopting computational approaches such as …

A Ligand-Based Approach To Identifying Commercially Available Inhibitors Of Human Galactokinase (Galk), Tyler Rose Feb 2023

A Ligand-Based Approach To Identifying Commercially Available Inhibitors Of Human Galactokinase (Galk), Tyler Rose

Annual Research Symposium

The purpose of this project was to find inhibitors of the human galactokinase (GALK) enzyme. GALK is responsible for catalyzing the conversion of galactose to galactose 1-phosphate, the first step in galactose metabolism. Galactose 1-phosphate builds up in the cells of patients with type 1 galactosemia due a genetic disorder. It has been proposed that inhibiting galactose 1-phosphate production by GALK may prevent many of the major complications of type 1 galactosemia. In this study, a ligand-based approach was used to identify commercially available inhibitors of GALK, starting from galactose-bearing natural products. Candidate inhibitors were screened for their ability to …

Designing And Synthesizing A Warhead-Fragment Inhibitory Ligand For Ivyp1 Through Fragment-Based Drug Discovery, Samuel Moore

Symposium of Student Scholars

Fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) is a powerful tool for developing anticancer and antimicrobial agents. Within this, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) provides a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative approach to screening and validating weak and robust binders with targeted proteins, making NMR among the most attractive strategies in FBDD. Inhibitor of vertebrate lysozyme (Ivyp1) of P. aeruginosa serves as an excellent target because of its active cellular location and implications in clinical prognosis for cystic fibrosis and immunocompromised patients. This study uses current NMR and biophysical techniques to develop a covalent, fragment-linked warhead inhibitor for Ivyp1 through synthetic methods, warhead linking, and …

Metabolomic Approach For Earlier Diagnosis Of Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury, Steven Xiu, James (Yong Jin) Lim Aug 2022

Metabolomic Approach For Earlier Diagnosis Of Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury, Steven Xiu, James (Yong Jin) Lim

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent complicated by its dose-limiting nephrotoxicity. This commonly presents as acute kidney injury (AKI), which is characterized by a reversible decline in kidney function. AKI is currently diagnosed by increased serum creatinine (SCr) levels, but this rise in SCr is delayed limiting diagnosis to when significant renal damage has already occurred. Currently, there are no known biomarkers capable of predicting or diagnosing early-stage cisplatin-induced AKI. Metabolomics was used to identify novel predictive/early diagnostic biomarkers for cisplatin-induced AKI. We hypothesized that differences in metabolic profiles will be able to predict and/or diagnose cisplatin-induced AKI prior to rise …

Methodological Challenges In Pharmacoeconomic Submissions For Cancer Drug Reimbursement In Canada From 2019-2021, Nupur Krishnan

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, carrying a mortality rate of 1 in 4 Canadians. As new therapeutic options are developed, high drug costs place a huge burden on patients and the healthcare system. Due to budget limitations, not all pharmaceuticals can be publicly funded, so difficult decisions must be made for which drugs are funded and in what contexts. The pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review (pCODR) evaluates submissions for new oncological pharmaceuticals to make reimbursement recommendations. Comprehensive analyses assessing limitations in recent oncology drug submissions have not yet been performed. The objective of this project, therefore, was …
