Antibiotics Gone Viral: Reduce Their Use For Acute Bronchitis, Esther Steinhaus Jan 2020

Antibiotics Gone Viral: Reduce Their Use For Acute Bronchitis, Esther Steinhaus

Student Research Poster Presentations 2020

Antibiotic resistance has become a global health crisis. Providers contribute to this crisis by inappropriately prescribing antibiotics causing an increase in the number of drug resistant organisms. The leading cause of inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions in the primary care setting are upper respiratory tract infections, primarily acute bronchitis. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project is to determine if an educational program for primary care providers regarding appropriate use of antibiotics will reduce the number of antibiotic prescriptions issued for acute bronchitis. The following PICOT question was developed to guide this evidence-based practice project: “Among primary care providers treating adults in …

PURPOSE: Dietary sodium intake guidelines is ≤2,300 mg/day, yet is exceeded by 90% of Americans. This study examined the impact of a high sodium diet on blood flow regulation during exercise. METHODS: Six males (25 ± 2 years) consumed dietary sodium intake guidelines for two weeks, with one week salt-capsule supplemented (HS: 6,900 mg/day of sodium) and the other week placebo-capsule supplemented (LS: 2,300 mg/day of sodium). At the end of each week, peripheral hemodynamic measurements [blood flow (BF), shear rate (SR), and flow mediated dilation (FMD)/SR)] of the brachial and superficial femoral artery were taken during handgrip (HG) and …

Corpus Cavernosum Abscess Secondary To Traumatic Perforation Of Urethral Diverticulum, Thomas C. Gore, Anna Schepcoff, Domenick Sorresso Jan 2020

Corpus Cavernosum Abscess Secondary To Traumatic Perforation Of Urethral Diverticulum, Thomas C. Gore, Anna Schepcoff, Domenick Sorresso

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020

A corpus cavernosum abscess is a rare condition. Usual etiologies include penile injection of erectile dysfunction medications or illicit drugs, priapism, sexually transmitted infections, and trauma; however, there have been reported cases of idiopathic etiology. The most common causative organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci, and Bacteroides [1]. Diagnosis is typically made clinically and through imaging (computed tomography [CT] and ultrasound). The first-line treatment is the use of intravenous (IV) antibiotics and surgical drainage. More conservative treatment, however, includes aspiration in conjunction with IV antibiotics [2-3]. Urethral diverticulum (UD) is the formation of a saccular outpouching of the urethral lumen. Symptoms …

A Rare Case Of Trichilemmal Carcinoma: Histology And Management, Lisa F. Fronek, Allyson Brahs, Maheera Farsi, Richard Miller

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020

Trichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is a rare, malignant, adnexal neoplasm that is derived from the outer root sheath (ORS) of the hair follicle. These tumors predominantly occur in elderly patients on sun-exposed areas, specifically on the head and neck with the face defined as the most common location. The mean age of diagnosis is 70 years old with a slight male predominance. These lesions are commonly identified as a papular, nodular, and sometimes, exophytic. They generally arise de-novo, but may also derivate from an underlying proliferating trichilemmal cyst with a loss of p53, a seborrheic keratosis, a nevus sebaceous, or a …

The Gut-Brain Axis: Treating Depression Through Microbiome Alterations, Alexandria Bachman-Williams Jan 2020

The Gut-Brain Axis: Treating Depression Through Microbiome Alterations, Alexandria Bachman-Williams

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• The purpose of this study is to explore the role of gut microbiome alterations in the treatment of anxiety and depression. • There are multiple pathological pathways that lead to the development of anxiety and depression. • Research shows a link between pathologic bacteria and low grade inflammation. This causes a disruption of neurotransmitters that are current targets of pharmacological treatment of depression and anxiety. • Transfer of “pathogenic” bacteria caused increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. • Treatment with probiotics and “protective” bacteria showed decreased BDI scores and improved symptoms. • Studies were small but show need for …

The Effects Of Initiating Metformin, To Prevent Or Delay Type Ii Diabetes, In Patients With Prediabetes, Kelsey K. Abraham, Jeanie Mchugo

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The purpose of this literature review is to explore metformin’s role in the treatment of patients with prediabetes within the primary care setting. The efficacy of metformin versus lifestyle modifications will be compared as well as metformin, as adjunctive therapy, to lifestyle modifications. Along with efficacy, a systematic analysis will examine the three above mentioned therapies regarding diabetes risk reduction. Lastly, this review will examine the safety and tolerability of metformin, specifically in patients with prediabetes. The data presented shows evidence that lifestyle modifications are first line treatment for prediabetes while metformin use should be reserved for those who fail …

Comparison Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Graft Materials And Risk Of Rupture/Reinjury In Young Athletes, Matt Hockert

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The anterior cruciate ligament tear is a standard surgical injury seen with young athletes competing at elite, amateur, and recreational capacities. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the rehabilitation guidelines and risks associated with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, as well as determining the role of rehabilitation in graft rupture. This literature review also serves to determine if graft choice for surgical repair plays a role in an increased risk of rupture or reinjury. This literature review used various online databases, including Dynamed, Cochran, and PubMed, with the utilization of MeSH terms listed below in “keywords” in order …

Low-Dose Naltrexone For Treatment In Crohn’S Disease And Fibromyalgia, Hannah R. Tkach

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The United States has experienced a dramatic increase in opioid abuse and overdoses, leading to a national epidemic. Contributing to this epidemic is the use of opioid therapy for complex chronic inflammatory and neuropathic conditions that remain difficult to treat. Many traditional treatments are ineffective or have intolerable side effects, forcing providers to utilize opioid therapy as a last resort. Recently, there is increased interest in the use of partial opioid antagonist naltrexone to treat Crohn’s disease and fibromyalgia. Previous research suggests the potential for naltrexone to provide analgesic effects when administered in low doses via its unique interaction with …
