Purpose: The biomechanical properties of muscles and tendons are important in rehabilitation and sport performance but are not routinely assessed. Recently, the MyotonPro device has been used in the assessment of a specific aspect of soft tissue stiffness, the resistance in deformation to an external force, at the Achilles tendon. Interestingly, it remains unclear if this stiffness is related to decreased ankle joint dorsiflexion mobility, and further if limb dominance affects this relationship. Purpose/Hypothesis: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is common in women treated for breast cancer. Exercise can reduce CRF, yet the impact of an eHealth exercise program on physical performance (PP) is rarely described. Purpose: Hip joint extension mobility is commonly assessed for restriction in clinical practice, most often with the modified Thomas test (MTT). However, the MTT is not without challenges, particularly in regards to achieving and standardizing the proximal pelvis and trunk positioning. The lone 3D validation study on the MTT used a blood pressure cuff under the lumbar lordosis in an attempt to achieve standard positioning, which is not always clinically pragmatic. Purpose/Hypothesis: The Repetitive Step Test (RST) assesses rapid stepping capability in anterior lateral (AL) and posterior lateral (PL) diagonal directions. This study’s goal was to determine the predictive validity of the RST to identify fallers with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). A secondary objective was to determine concurrent validity of the RST to other established tests. It was hypothesized that those who completed fewer steps with the RST would be more likely to fall and that the RST would predict falls at least as well as the other balance tests.

Purpose/Hypothesis: Increased muscle and tendon stiffness plays a role in the development of musculoskeletal pathologies. A number of interventions have been proposed to temporarily reduce muscle/tendon stiffness including soft tissue mobilization (STM) techniques and stretching. The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate and short-term effects of STM versus self-stretching on common extensor tendon (CET) stiffness in a group of recreational tennis players.

Purpose: Hip region extension mobility is commonly assessed in physical therapy practice, most commonly performed using the modified Thomas test (MTT). The validity of the MTT using 3D motion capture methods has been evaluated in only a study evaluating only healthy young males. Purpose/Hypothesis: Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by the inappropriate functioning and synthesis of collagen, elastin, and fibrillin in the body, affecting many systems including the musculoskeletal system. In hypermobility-type EDS, individuals can present with instability at various locations in the body and may result in joint dislocations and pain. This can result in difficulty activating the abdominal muscles. The purpose of this study is to determine if a focused 3 to 6 month rehabilitation program improves inter-rectus distance (IRD), abdominal strength, and body image in women diagnosed with EDS.

Abstract

- There are four common treatment modalities for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

• CPAP, MAD, UAS, MMA

- Retrospective data was examined to compare efficacies between these treatments for patients treated with one of these four OSA therapies.

• Primary outcome: Mean disease alleviation (MDA) - calculated value based on improvement of AHI adjusted by compliance.
• Secondary outcomes: Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) - ESS, PRAQ, SAQLI

- It was found that the greatest mean disease alleviation was found in patients who underwent MMA. PROMs showed the most significant improvement in daytime sleepiness (ESS) for MMA.

A Single Center Qualitative Study To Improve Coordination Of Follow-Up Care For Patients Diagnosed With Abusive Head Trauma, Ruairi Smith-Dewey, Elise Wright, Daniella Donofrio, Hannah Goebel, Sara Kilbride

Introduction: Children diagnosed with abusive head trauma (AHT) have subsequent long-term developmental, behavioral, and medical consequences resulting in increased medical system utilization. There were 16 overall potential needs identified, with a single patient having 12. In 2023 at Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH), 47% (8/17) of patients with AHT had < 50% of follow-up needs addressed at time of discharge. None had 100% of follow-up needs addressed. Needs not being addressed included need not identified or written documentation for need of follow-up without subsequent referral placed/appointment scheduled. Project goal was all follow-up needs to be addressed for at least 50% of children with AHT by January 2025. Methods (include PDSA cycles): Children admitted to CMH from January 2024-December 2024 and diagnosed with AHT by the Safety, Care & Nurturing (SCAN) team were included. Interventions were designed and implemented by a multidisciplinary team to address barriers including variation in scheduling process per specialty, lack of knowledge, and changing caregivers. • PDSA 1 (1/1/24): SCAN added standardized list of potential follow-up needs to documentation. • PDSA 2 (2/1/24): Trauma NP placed ophthalmology outpatient referrals. • PDSA 3 (3/1/24) Social work placed and documented early intervention referrals. Transitioned to SCAN RN responsibility. • PDSA 4 (4/10/24): AHT caregiver handouts with description of all potential follow-up needs added to discharge instructions. • PDSA 5 (12/11/24): AHT Evidence Based Practice guideline created including follow-up needs. Appointments and referrals were tracked by the author. QI tools used included fault tree, fishbone, and PICK Chart. Results: In 2024, 27 children were diagnosed with AHT by SCAN team at CMH. Five children were excluded from the study as 3 died and 2 were transferred to another hospital. The number of patients with < 50% of follow-up needs addressed was reduced from 47% to 43%. All follow-up needs were addressed in 13% (3/23) of patients. Conclusions: While project aims weren’t met, there was progress. Next steps include educating all discharging teams at CMH as there is no single team discharging these patients. Overall, there are few of these patients so standardization of discharge practices is challenging. SCAN created a working group and point person for appointment tracking to ensure follow-up needs established at discharge.

Over 100,000 individuals in the United States died from drug overdose in 2022, over 80,000 of which involved opioids. Overdose deaths from psychostimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine) have also been on the rise.

There has also been an increase in substance-related emergency department visits and hospitalizations. People who use drugs (PWUD) often have longer hospital stays, higher self-discharge, and readmission rates.
