Characterization Of Calbindin Positive Interneurons Within The Ventral Horn Of The Mouse Spinal Cord, Taylor L. Floyd, David R. Ladle Jan 2015

Characterization Of Calbindin Positive Interneurons Within The Ventral Horn Of The Mouse Spinal Cord, Taylor L. Floyd, David R. Ladle

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Sensory-motor circuits in the spinal cord integrate sensory feedback from muscles and modulate locomotor behavior. Although we know how the sensory-motor system generally works, the main issue lies in identifying all neurons involved and understanding their interrelationships. Many interneurons contribute to sensory-motor circuits and have been well studied. For example, Renshaw cells (RC) are inhibitory interneurons that prevent motor neurons from over-activity. A distinguishing feature of RCs is that they are the only interneurons within the ventral-most region of the spinal cord expressing the calcium binding protein calbindin (CB). Recent studies have found other subpopulations of ventral horn interneurons outside …

Specific Sport Training Effect On Fms And Y Balance Scores, Phillip Anloague, Nicholas Herrin, John Malone, Cody Bond Jan 2015

Specific Sport Training Effect On Fms And Y Balance Scores, Phillip Anloague, Nicholas Herrin, John Malone, Cody Bond

University of Dayton Doctor of Physical Therapy Annual Research Symposium

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Y-Balance Test (YBT) are functional measurement tools utilized for injury prevention, performance predictability, and as return to sport criteria. The FMS is comprised of 7 standardized tests of movement patterns that are rated from 0-3 and includes: Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, In-Line Lunge, Shoulder Mobility, Active Straight Leg Raise, Trunk Stability Push-Up, and Rotary Stability. The YBT is a measurement of single leg stance in the anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral directions that is advocated for assessing dynamic balance. There lacks evidence that collegiate athletes in different sports that require specific training programs and physical …

The assessment of weekly and even monthly surf practice/training hours is vital for understanding the loads these up and coming surfers endure. Such information will help understand what kind of training these athletes are undertaking, how long they are surfing, what they consider training, and also areas that should be improved upon in terms of specific training. The purpose of this study was to establish surfers' training hours in terms of strength, balance and conditioning hours, as well as surfing hours, coached hours and competition hours. The monitoring of the athletes will provide insights into the weekly surf hours compared …

Visual Voices: An Arts-Based Assessment of the Perceived Identity of Aging Maine Residents

Participant recruitment flyer for UNE student project Visual Voices: An Arts-Based Assessment Of The Perceived Identity Of Aging Maine Residents. This project was designed to investigate the topics of perception, identity, and aging. Between February and May 2015, over the course of twelve sessions, the UNE team met with six female residents of the Park Danforth senior living community in Portland to have conversations and create art about how the residents perceive themselves in contrast to how they feel perceived by important people in their lives, such as friends, family, and healthcare providers.

The Efficacy Of Electrocardiograms As A Screening Tool To Detect Cardiac Abnormalities In Young Athletes, Cody William Jan 2015

The Efficacy Of Electrocardiograms As A Screening Tool To Detect Cardiac Abnormalities In Young Athletes, Cody William

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Sudden cardiac death (SCD) among athletes can be attributed to increased cardiovascular demands associated with vigorous exercise.

• The majority of athletes who experience sudden cardiac death are asymptomatic.

• Pre-participation history and physicals, (H&P) help to identify underlying cardiovascular disorders with the potential to increase the risk of SCD in an athlete.

• The efficacy of pre-participation H&Ps to identify underlying cardiac etiology has been debated.

• The purpose of this research is to:

---Determine incidence and cause of SCD among athletes (Table 1).

---Determine the efficacy and evidenced-based criteria for the interpretation of ECGs in athletes.

---Evaluate …

Handwriting And Metacognition: The Relationship Between Self-Reflection And Penmanship, Rachel E. Malmquist, Chelsey M. Robinson, Kirsten L. Rogers, Andrea B. Sosa Jan 2015

Handwriting And Metacognition: The Relationship Between Self-Reflection And Penmanship, Rachel E. Malmquist, Chelsey M. Robinson, Kirsten L. Rogers, Andrea B. Sosa

Student Research Posters

The majority of school-based occupational therapy (OT) referrals are for handwriting. In fact, fine motor and handwriting concerns affecting educational performance make up 80-85% of OT referrals in schools. Occupational therapists use an abundance of interventions for remediating handwriting difficulties, but there is scant evidence of why specific strategies or combinations of strategies are effective.

Cognitive interventions have shown to be successful in the treatment of handwriting. Metacognitive skill, a component of cognition, allows a child to self-monitor and self-reflect on his or her handwriting skills to correct mistakes and generate goals for improvement. Therefore, a child’s ability to self-reflect …

Interprofessional Collaboration Between Occupational Therapists And Registered Nurses In Acute Care Settings: An Exploratory Study, Vincent P. O'Brien, Bethany J. Loy, Kelly Nguyen, Holly Micheff

Student Research Posters

Background. Collaboration between occupational therapists and nurses is key to a positive prognosis for their patients. Currently, there is a gap in the research on professional relationships between occupational therapists and registered nurses in acute care settings. Purpose. To examine interprofessional collaboration between registered nurses and occupational therapy in an acute care setting. Methods. A phenomenological, qualitative design with use of semi-structured interviews was used. Interviewees were four occupational therapists and four registered nurses who currently work in acute care settings in Northern California and were recruited through a snowball, convenience and purposive sampling. Themes and subthemes …
