Background:
The focus on traditional acute, hospital-based health care is being replaced with a new paradigm aimed at providing primary care, care of populations, and care across transitions and providers. As changes unfold, nursing education is challenged to prepare graduates who can effectively function in new healthcare environments of the 21st century. In response, the Jefferson College of Nursing (JCN) embarked on the ambitious task of designing a new 21st century baccalaureate nursing curriculum over a 13-month period. Although a 13-month turnaround time for curriculum design is unprecedented, what is most unique about JCN’s initiative is that it began with …

My research goals are to find better ways to restore musculoskeletal function, maintain health, and improve mobility in healthy and clinical populations. Students in my laboratory (engineering, kinesiology, physical therapy) investigate how humans move and implement new exercise interventions to improve physical conditioning and performance. We work with populations ranging from individuals living with a spinal cord injury to adults recovering from ACL surgery to elite athletes. Applications for our research range from basic aspects of muscle contraction to applied human performance in a variety of settings including rehabilitation, ergonomics, and sport.

Background
• Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), if within Milan Criteria, is an indication for liver transplantation.
• In contrast, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC) is a contra-indication to liver transplantation due to high rates of recurrence.
• LI-RADS 5 classification (synonymous with OPTN-5) carries a near 100% positive predictive value for HCC, allowing prioritization of patients for liver transplantation without histological confirmation.
• The “LI-RADS M” classification indicates the presence of malignancy not meeting diagnostic criteria for HCC. In theory, IHCC lesions should be identified as LI-RADS M and not LI-RADS 5.

Physician Executive Leadership
Poster presented at: 14th Annual AMA Research Symposium in Orlando, Fl
Objective:
To investigate the effectiveness of Physican Leadership, an open access, student-led healthcare leadership program at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, in preparing to face five key emerging topics in medical practice: healthcare economics, health policy, care and quality and safety, law and medicine, and patient experience.
The Problem: Gaps in Medical Education
Healthcare in the US continues to evolve, and topics such as health policy, health finance, and patient experience are not central to the practice of medicine.
However, the sheer volume of material students are required to learn …

UNE Flu Crew
IPEC Mini-grant application for funding of UNE student project The UNE Flu Crew: An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Assessment of Knowledge, Beliefs and Perceptions surrounding Influenza Immunizations and the Promotion of Preventing Infection. Osteopathic medicine and public health students collaborated to assess the knowledge and perceptions regarding the influenza vaccine among the University of New England’s student and faculty populations. The project also provided a peer-to-peer education model where members of the Flu Crew designed a teaching curriculum and provided community outreach to the UNE Biddeford campus and local community schools.

Subharmonic aided pressure estimation (SHAPE) is based on the inverse relationship between the subharmonic amplitude of contrast microbubbles (obtained by transmitting at the fundamental frequency fo and receiving at fo/2) and the ambient pressure (see fig.1).
A noninvasive ultrasound based pressure estimation procedure would be a major development in the diagnosis of portal hypertension and less invasive than the current catheter-based hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurement.
The hypothesis of this study was that portal vein pressures can be monitored and quantified noninvasively in humans using SHAPE.
First selected waveforms were optimized in vitro and in canines, then SHAPE was …

Eastern Illinois University is a community enthusiastically engaged in intellectual exploration. This includes faculty testing the boundaries of knowledge within their disciplines and the boundaries of how to convey that knowledge to their students. It also includes students, both graduate students joining with their faculty mentors in pressing the disciplinary boundaries, and undergraduate students discovering the front edges of the disciplines under the guidance of their instructors. Today we celebrate the full range of such faculty contributions: journal articles, book chapters, monographs, art works, music compositions, performances in all forms, and a host of others. Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
Jamtara District is one of the most backward, rural districts in Jharkhand State in North Eastern India. The small town of Jamtara, 5 hours by road from Calcutta, is the District Headquarters. The Edwards English School (Est. 1995) in town was chosen as the location for this sabbatical project. The original intent was to complete healthcare needs analysis of the community, starting with the school children, and then assessing the feasibility of initiating quality healthcare services for this rural community. With the limited time of 4 months and no funding, it was clear that no healthcare delivery could be attempted …

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
Infant mortality is the passing of a child before his/her first birthday. With the fifth highest infant mortality rate in the United States, infant mortality is increasingly becoming a larger and more detrimental problem, especially in South Linden, Ohio. Out of every one thousand children in South Linden, 20.3 of them will not make it to their first birthday. However, despite the staggering statistics, many are not aware of the issue, and counter infant mortality, including those who live in South Linden. Thus, Music for Prosperity was created to address the lack of awareness to address the lack of awareness …
Grassroots Community Fundraising And Advocacy To Reduce Breast Cancer Mortality In Ohio Through Patient Navigation And Safety-Net Programs, Julie Mcmahon
Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
Ohio has the third highest breast cancer mortality rate of any state in the U.S. In 2016, 1,700 women will die from breast cancer in Ohio. When diagnosed at early stages, survival and quality of life are improved. Barriers to care like finances, health literacy, insurance coverage, fear and transportation contribute to late-stage diagnoses. A community needs assessment of 30 counties in central and southeast Ohio was conducted to inventory all health system assets, healthy policy impacts, and collect qualitative data to identify local barriers and solutions to reduce mortality. Results were used to develop a multi-level approach to reduce …

Concord, COVA and Syntero provide an intensive hospital diversion program with the goal to keep young adults from a second psychiatric hospitalization and costly ongoing mental health treatment. Program elements include counseling, case management, psychiatry appointments and medication when needed, family education and vocational assistance to allow healing outside the hospital. Success is measured as a percentage of program participants re-hospitalized for one year after entering program versus control group at start of program of 47% re-hospitalization; and percentage of participants engaged in employment or engaged in education or training with a goal of 60%. Concord is also partnering with …

Family Based Treatment For Adults With Anorexia Nervosa Using Insights From Neurobiology, The Center For Balanced Living
Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a biologically-based brain disorder, which has the highest death rate of all mental illnesses. No effective treatments exist for adults with severe and enduring AN (5-7+ years). Brain imaging studies at University of California San Diego on AN temperament, cognition and eating show common traits related to neural function. The temperaments are characterized by increased trait anxiety and state anxiety related to food and eating, high incidence of co-morbid anxiety disorders, high punishment sensitivity and low reward reactivity, elevated intolerance of uncertainty and exaggerated harm avoidance (HA). HA is a multifaceted temperament trait that contains elements …
