Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss with an initial mean weight of 174 g (1+ year old) were fed on 3 different commercial diets (1 extruded pellet and 2 steam pellet) in the same environmental conditions until their first spawning. Changes in growth performance (weight gain, condition factor, specific growth rate and feed conversion rate), gonadosomatic index (GSI), hepatosomatic index (HSI) and body composition (protein, lipid, ash and dry matter) were investigated. The mean weight gain and condition factor for fish fed the extruded diet was significantly greater than for those fed the steam pellet diets (P < 0.05 ). There were no significant differences in specific growth rate, mean length increments and feed conversion rate among the groups, although the feed conversion rate for the extruded diet was slightly lower than the others. The HSI of the group fed an extruded diet was significantly greater than those of the others ( P < 0.05 ). The GSI values of female and male fish at the end of the study (October) did not differ significantly among the groups. Similarly, diet had no significant effects on the muscle composition of the trial fish, except that the muscle lipid of the group fed the extruded diet was significantly higher than those of the other groups (P < 0.05).

Growth Performance, Body Traits And Fillet Composition Of The European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax) Reared In Various Salinities And Fresh Water, O. Tufan Eroldoğan, Meti̇n Kumlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of various salinities and fresh water (FW) (0.4 ppt) on the growth performance, body traits and fillet composition of juvenile and young sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in FW were investigated in two separate experiments in this study. In Experiment 1, following acclimation, sea bass juveniles (9.5 ± 0.5 g) were reared in 240-L fibreglass tanks (40 x 40 x 150 cm) for 90 days in five different treatments (FW, 10, 20, 30 and 40 ppt). The fish cultured in FW, 10 and 20 ppt grew better than those at 30 or 40 ppt (P < 0.05). Salinity did not affect the crude protein, lipid or ash content of the fish (P > 0.05). Yet, the dry …

The Effect Of Concentrate Feeding Levels On The Postweanining Performance Of Holstein Friesian Calves, Mete Yanar, Olcay Güler, Bahri̇ Bayram

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The influences of different levels of concentrate on the growth characteristics of Holstein Friesian calves reared under an original calf-rearing program were investigated in this study. Forty-one new-born calves (20 male and 21 female) were allocated to the four concentrate groups: 2, 2.5, 3 kg/calf and ad libitum. The calves were weaned at 5 weeks of age, and the trial lasted for 6 months. The results with regard to weights at 6 months of age revealed that an increasing amount of concentrate supplementation resulted in a significantly (P < 0.01) higher live weight. Furthermore, daily weight gains between birth and 6 months of age was also significantly higher (P < 0.01) in the ad libitum group than in the 2, 2.5 and 3 kg/day groups. The highest overall gains in body measurements, for example body length and heart girth, were obtained from calves fed concentrate ad libitum. However, feed efficiency ratios were not significantly influenced by the various amounts of concentrate offered to calves. The overall results suggest that the appropriate level of concentrate for the new calf-rearing program should be ad libitum.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the growth, age composition, sex ratio, condition factor and spawning period of whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus Nordmann, 1840) on the eastern part of the Trabzon-Yomra coast were investigated. During the study, a total of 1730 fish (1122 females and 608 males) ranging in age from group I to IX were examined. The chi squared test was used to calculate ratios between female and male specimens and no significant difference was found (P>0.05), and the relative growth length and the relative growth weight differences between females and males were not found to be statistically significant (P>0.05). …
