Background/aim: Spontaneous wheals and/or angioedema lasting longer than six weeks are described as chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Omalizumab is used for the treatment of antihistamine-resistant CSU. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet- lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) are considered important indicators of inflammation and platelet activation in chronic diseases. We aimed to determine the NLR, PLR, MPV, and PDW levels in patients with CSU compared with healthy controls. We also aimed to investigate the effects of omalizumab therapy on these parameters in CSU patients. Materials and methods: This hospital-based, retrospective study included 143 patients …

On the day 20, rats were executed. Protein levels in urine were measured and fetuses, placentas, and kidneys were weighted and evaluated. Thoracic aorta, renal, and uterine arteries were removed for …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Ss-Lactam Antibiotics And Serum On Growth And Gene Expression In Escherichiacoli Strain Jj1886, Eli̇f Bozçal Dağdevi̇ren

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: ß-Lactamase-producing Escherichia coli strain JJ1886 is an epidemic clone with high virulence properties. Because this strain can survive in the bloodstream, we aimed here to understand how ß-lactam antibiotics and human serum affect the growth and gene expression of this bacterium. Materials and methods: We report the time-dependent growth effect of normal human serum and heat-inactivated serum, together with ß-lactam antibiotics (including cefotaxime, ceftazidime, and carbenicillin), for E. coli strain JJ1886. Relative gene expression of ß-lactamase-related genes (encoding the ß-lactamase regulator, CTX-M-15, and peptidoglycan glycosyltransferase) and serum survival- associated genes (encoding lipoprotein NlpI, murein lipoprotein, lipopolysaccharide core heptose (I) …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Leishmaniasis is a disease group carried by Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia sand flies infected with Leishmania and is mostly observed in rural areas. In this study, using high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA), we aim to identify the active types of leishmaniasis, which are inadequately identified by classical methods. Materials and methods: Samples of 85 patients were examined in the study. Six of the patients were suspected of having visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and 79 cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). The slides prepared from the samples were stained with Giemsa stain and examined under a light microscope. The results were compared with those determined in …

Background/aim: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry is an alternative way of identifying mycobacteria via the analysis of biomolecules. It is being increasingly used in routine microbiology practice since it permits early, rapid, and cost-effective identification of pathogens of clinical importance. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of phenotypic identification of mycobacteria by the MALDI-TOF MS MBT Mycobacteria Library (ML) 4.0 (Bruker, Daltonics) compared to standard sequence analysis. Materials and methods: A total of 155 Mycobacterium clinical and external quality control isolates, comprising nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) (n = 95) and the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) (n …

Losartan Inhibits Egfr Transactivation In Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Mustafa Kirça, Akin Yeşi̇lkaya Jan 2018

Losartan Inhibits Egfr Transactivation In Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Mustafa Kirça, Akin Yeşi̇lkaya

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced molecular signaling pathways play a significant role in the progression of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and atherosclerosis. In addition to the well-known effects of Ang II, it may activate epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in a process known as transactivation, which contributes to vascular pathologies. The aim of this study was to determine whether losartan could reduce EGFR transactivation induced by Ang II. Additionally, we evaluated the roles of heparin-binding epidermal-like growth factor (HB-EGF) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in Ang II-induced EGFR transactivation. Materials and methods: Vascular smooth muscle cells were isolated from a rat …
