Effect Of A Mixture Of Essential Oils And A Plant-Based Extract For The Management Of Localized Superficial Pyoderma In Dogs: An Open-Label Clinical Trial, Lerpen Duangkaew, Lawan Larsuprom, Chalermpol Lekcharoensuk, Charles Chen

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A mixture of essential oils and a plant-based extract in the form of shampoo and spot-on were shown to have in vitro antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. The purpose of this open-label clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of these two products for the management of canine localized superficial pyoderma. Twenty dogs diagnosed with 3-4 localized pyoderma lesions were enrolled. The dogs were bathed weekly for 8 weeks with shampoo and 48 hours later, spot-on was applied near the lesions. Clinical lesions and pruritus scores were subjectively assessed using a clinical improvement score system (1-5) and a pruritic visual …

Frontoethmoidal Meningoencephalocele With Multiple Congenital Craniofacial And Skeletal Malformations In A Stillborn Puppy, Promporn Raksaseri, Wuthichai Klomkleaw Dec 2017

Frontoethmoidal Meningoencephalocele With Multiple Congenital Craniofacial And Skeletal Malformations In A Stillborn Puppy, Promporn Raksaseri, Wuthichai Klomkleaw

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A one-and-a-half-year-old Shih-Tzu bitch went into natural labor after full term of her first pregnancy, giving birth to 4 puppies. One of them was a male which died at birth, 104 grams in weight and 12 centimeters in length. This puppy showed several facial abnormalities and skeletal deformities. It was preserved in 10% formalin for anatomical, histopathological, and radiographic studies. Gross anatomical study revealed congenital anomalies of the eyes including anophthalmia of the left eye and microphthalmia of the right eye. Malformations of the ears including anotia of the left ear and microtia of the right ear were observed. Evidence …

Diagnostic Value Of Echocardiographic Indices And Cardiac Biomarkers In Dogs With Chronic Mitral Valve Insufficiency, Hyun-Seok Kim, Sang-Il Suh, Changbaig Hyun Sep 2017

Diagnostic Value Of Echocardiographic Indices And Cardiac Biomarkers In Dogs With Chronic Mitral Valve Insufficiency, Hyun-Seok Kim, Sang-Il Suh, Changbaig Hyun

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Because all dogs having heart diseases are not in symptomatic heart failure stage, it is important to determine the stage of heart failure in dogs with heart diseases. Therefore, this study evaluated the diagnostic value of several echocardiographic parameters and cardiac biomarkers for differentiating dogs with heart disease from healthy dogs and dogs with symptomatic heart failure from dogs with asymptomatic heart failure. The study population consisted of 51 dogs having chronic mitral valvular insufficiency (CMVI) with varying degrees of heart failure and 18 healthy control dogs. Several echocardiographic parameters and cardiac biomarkers were evaluated to achieve the study aims. …

Surgical Treatment Of Spontaneous Pneumothorax Associated With Lobal Emphysema In A Dog, Yawon Hwang, Seungwon Yoo, Gonhyung Kim Jun 2017

Surgical Treatment Of Spontaneous Pneumothorax Associated With Lobal Emphysema In A Dog, Yawon Hwang, Seungwon Yoo, Gonhyung Kim

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A 3-year-old female Maltese dog was admitted with cough, dyspnea, and gasping. There was no sign of trauma in history taking. It was speculated that pneumothorax occurred in the right pleural space after X-ray examination. Thoracocentesis and chest tube were applied for 5 days. The symptoms of dyspnea and cough were, however, not relieved or recurred. Exploratory thoracotomy was considered to be the most appropriate approach. Spongiform and air-containing tissue was identified in the whole parenchyma in the right middle lobe. Total lobectomy was performed and then a chest tube was inserted. Atrophy of the right cranial lobe and collapse …

Effects Of Cryopreservation And Leukodepletion On Morphological Index Of Red Blood Cells In Dogs, Deniz Aktaran Bala, Ibrahim Akyazi Jun 2017

Effects Of Cryopreservation And Leukodepletion On Morphological Index Of Red Blood Cells In Dogs, Deniz Aktaran Bala, Ibrahim Akyazi

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Preservation of blood components for transfusion is a long-standing phenomenon. However, studies of cryopreservation of leukodepleted canine erythrocytes are quite limited and no studies are available with respect to morphological evaluation of erythrocytes during the cryopreservation process. The aim of this study was to determine morphological changes caused by cryopreservation, storage and leukocyte filtration. Healthy adult dogs meeting the criteria for blood transfusion were used in this study. Packed red blood cells (pRBCs) were obtained from each dog. The samples were divided into two groups. Leukocyte filtration was performed on one group of pRBCs. The other group received no filtration. …

Relationships Between Transferrin And Transferrin Receptor (Tfr) Expression In Dogs With Malignant Oronasal Tumors, Sekkarin Ploypetch, Anudep Rungsipipat, Prapruddee Piyaviriyakul, Nan Choisunirachon, Pussadee Makoom, Chanin Kalpravidh Mar 2017

Relationships Between Transferrin And Transferrin Receptor (Tfr) Expression In Dogs With Malignant Oronasal Tumors, Sekkarin Ploypetch, Anudep Rungsipipat, Prapruddee Piyaviriyakul, Nan Choisunirachon, Pussadee Makoom, Chanin Kalpravidh

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Malignant cells require a large amount of iron for cell growth. Transferrin transfers iron from blood to cells by reacting with transferrin receptor (TfR). In humans, transferrin and transferrin receptor correlate with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC); however, the association with canine oral tumor has not been studied. This study aimed to investigate saliva and serum transferrin and tissue transferrin receptor in canine OSCC and oral melanoma (OM). Saliva and serum transferrin samples were collected pre- and 14 days post-operation, compared with healthy control and evaluated by a sandwich ELISA assay. Serum transferrin concentration in the experimental group both before …

Effects Of Ivabradine On Left Ventricular Function In Dogs With Congestive Heart Failure, Sajika Sri-Ngam, Soontaree Petchdee Mar 2017

Effects Of Ivabradine On Left Ventricular Function In Dogs With Congestive Heart Failure, Sajika Sri-Ngam, Soontaree Petchdee

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Ivabradine is an essential drug administered in current standard therapy for human heart failure and is expected to be beneficial to congestive heart failure dog. Ivabradine is a selective If Channel inhibitor. It reduces cardiac pacemaker activity and slows heart rate. There are a few reports of ivabradine in veterinary applications. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ivabradine on left ventricular function in dogs with congestive heart failure. Thirteen client-owned dogs with systolic and/or diastolic heart failure were included in this study. The dogs were assigned to two groups: (i) the active control group, given …
