Introduction: Osteopontin (OPN) polymorphisms are associated with muscle size and modify disease progression in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We hypothesized that OPN may share a molecular network with myostatin (MSTN).

Methods: Studies were conducted in the golden retriever (GRMD) and mdx mouse models of DMD. Follow-up in-vitro studies were employed in myogenic cells and the mdx mouse treated with recombinant mouse (rm) or human (Hu) OPN protein.

Results: OPN was increased and MSTN was decreased and levels correlated inversely in GRMD hypertrophied muscle. RM-OPN treatment led to induced AKT1 and FoxO1 phosphorylation, microRNA-486 modulation, and decreased MSTN. An AKT1 inhibitor …

Surgical Treatment Of Spontaneous Pneumothorax Associated With Lobal Emphysema In A Dog, Yawon Hwang, Seungwon Yoo, Gonhyung Kim

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A 3-year-old female Maltese dog was admitted with cough, dyspnea, and gasping. There was no sign of trauma in history taking. It was speculated that pneumothorax occurred in the right pleural space after X-ray examination. Thoracocentesis and chest tube were applied for 5 days. The symptoms of dyspnea and cough were, however, not relieved or recurred. Exploratory thoracotomy was considered to be the most appropriate approach. Spongiform and air-containing tissue was identified in the whole parenchyma in the right middle lobe. Total lobectomy was performed and then a chest tube was inserted. Atrophy of the right cranial lobe and collapse …

Effects Of Cryopreservation And Leukodepletion On Morphological Index Of Red Blood Cells In Dogs, Deniz Aktaran Bala, Ibrahim Akyazi

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Preservation of blood components for transfusion is a long-standing phenomenon. However, studies of cryopreservation of leukodepleted canine erythrocytes are quite limited and no studies are available with respect to morphological evaluation of erythrocytes during the cryopreservation process. The aim of this study was to determine morphological changes caused by cryopreservation, storage and leukocyte filtration. Healthy adult dogs meeting the criteria for blood transfusion were used in this study. Packed red blood cells (pRBCs) were obtained from each dog. The samples were divided into two groups. Leukocyte filtration was performed on one group of pRBCs. The other group received no filtration. …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Malignant cells require a large amount of iron for cell growth. Transferrin transfers iron from blood to cells by reacting with transferrin receptor (TfR). In humans, transferrin and transferrin receptor correlate with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC); however, the association with canine oral tumor has not been studied. This study aimed to investigate saliva and serum transferrin and tissue transferrin receptor in canine OSCC and oral melanoma (OM). Saliva and serum transferrin samples were collected pre- and 14 days post-operation, compared with healthy control and evaluated by a sandwich ELISA assay. Serum transferrin concentration in the experimental group both before …

Beta-amyloid (Aβ) immunotherapy is a promising intervention to slow Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Aging dogs naturally accumulate Aβ and show cognitive decline. An active vaccine against fibrillar Aβ 1–42 (VAC) in aged beagles resulted in maintenance but not improvement of cognition along with reduced brain Aβ. Behavioral enrichment (ENR) led to cognitive benefits but no reduction in Aβ. We hypothesized cognitive outcomes could be improved by combining VAC with ENR in aged dogs. Aged dogs (11–12 years) were placed into 4 groups: (1) control/control (C/C); (2) control/VAC (C/V); (3) ENR/control (E/C); (4) ENR and VAC (E/V) and treated for 20 months. …

Fascia Lata Flap To Repair Perineal Hernia In Dogs: A Preliminary Study, Simone Guérios, Juliana Monteiro, Daniella Matos Da Silva

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Perineal hernia (PH) in dogs normally requires surgical reconstruction of the pelvic diaphragm. The use of fascia lata grafts has been reported and described in previous studies for the correction of PH after failure of the conventional herniorrhaphy. The purpose of this report is to describe a modified technique of fascia lata flap (FLP) for PH repair in dogs. Six client-owned male dogs with PH were included in the study. PH was repaired with a FLP obtained from the dog's ipsilateral thigh and sutured directly into the perineal defect. Caudal scrotal orchiectomy was performed in all dogs that were not …
