A bidirectional communication exists between the brain and the gut, in which the gut microbiota influences cognitive function and vice-versa. Gut dysbiosis has been linked to several diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). However, the relationship between gut dysbiosis and markers of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), a major contributor to ADRD, is unknown. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the connection between the gut microbiome, cognitive, and neuroimaging markers of cSVD in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS). Markers of cSVD included white matter hyperintensities (WMH), peak width of skeletonized mean diffusivity (PSMD), and executive function (EF), estimated …

School of Medicine Publications

Background: Sensorimotor and blood-based biomarkers are promising dementia biomarkers with high accessibility and limited invasiveness. Although sensorimotor changes appear with aging, more severe changes may precede cognitive decline, dementia, and other neurological diseases. Additionally, blood-based neurofilament light (NfL), a broad marker of neuroaxonal injury, is commonly elevated in many types of neurological disease. Prior studies have suggested that increased blood levels of NfL in conjunction with sensorimotor decline may allow for earlier neurological disease diagnosis and/or prediction of disease severity, but little is known about the correlation of these markers in the general population. We examined the association between NfL …

Increased vascular permeability is a frequent outcome of viperid snakebite envenomation, leading to local and systemic complications. We reported that snake venom cysteine-rich secretory proteins (svCRiSPs) from North American pit vipers increase vascular permeability both in vitro and in vivo. They also induce acute activation of several adhesion and signaling molecules that may play a critical role in the pathophysiology of snakebites. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have gained interest for their diverse functions in intercellular communication, regulating cellular processes, blood-endothelium interactions, vascular permeability, and immune modulation. They also hold potential as valuable biomarkers for diagnosing, predicting, and monitoring therapeutic responses in …

EMBOLISE (NCT 04402632) is an ongoing randomized controlled trial investigating the safety and efficacy of middle meningeal artery embolization for the treatment of subacute or chronic subdural hematoma (SDH). Viz RECRUIT SDH is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based software platform that can automatically detect SDH in noncontrast computed tomography (NCHCT) images and report the volume, maximum thickness, and midline shift. We hypothesized that the mobile recruitment platform would aid enrollment and coordinate communication and image sharing among the entire research team.

Silicosis is one of the most important occupational respiratory diseases worldwide, hence the importance of making a correct diagnosis. Diagnosis is commonly based on radiological findings according to the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses and occupational exposure. High-resolution computed tomography is indicated for differential diagnosis. This article presents two cases with an initial diagnosis of silicosis that ended up being diagnosed as sarcoidosis and siderosis, respectively. The first case was a 42-year-old male who worked as a crushing operator in an underground copper and molybdenum mine for 22 years. He had a history of exposure to silicon dioxide …
