Adaptation Of Bone To Mechanical Loading In The Growing Rat: Histomorphometric Study, Ta-Chung Lee, Yun-Tai Lu, Teen-Meei Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Six-week-old male rats were subjected to right hindlimb immobilization or served as control for 0,4, 6, 8,12, or 24 weeks. There were double-labeled with bone markers prior to sacrifice. The right limb was immobi-lized by sciatic nerve denervation and considered unloaded. Static and dynamic histomorphometry were performed on 20- urn-thick Villanueva stained, undecalcified sections of the proximal tibial metaphysis and thetibial shaft. In the unloaded limb, immobilization induced cancellous and cortical bone loss. Unloading caused a negative trabecular bone balance from a combination of elevated bone resorption and depressed bone formation. The bone loss was accompanied by poorer trabecular architecture(trabacular number …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Patients bridging to transplantation with left ventricular assist device ( LVAD) often require prolonged support of ventricular assistance. As improving perioperative survial with LVAD, additional emphasis must be placed on patients' cardiopulmonary rehabilitation to prevent the occurrence of the deterious effect of bedrest ( such as ”immobilization syndrome”) and improve their exercise capability and life of quality. In this study,we proposed one case undergoing implantation of LVAD (Heart Mate) because of acute myocarditis complicated with end-stage heart failure. After LVAD insertion, the patient received cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. The program consisted of chest physical therapy(including splint cough, incentive spirometry exercise, breathing exercise)and progressive …

Global Aphasia Without Hemiplegia: Three Casereport, Szu-Fu Chen, Tsan-Hon Liou, Zong-Jing Wang, I-Nan Lien

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Global aphasia is the most severe form of language disorder. It is characterized by an extensive lesion involving the entire left perisylvian lesion and is usually accompanied by a dense right hemiplegia. However, it may be associated with only minimal and transient motor deficit. Most of the previous reports indicated that embolism was the most possible etiology of global aphasia without hemiplegia. Here we present three patients who acutely developed global aphasia without hemiplegia as a result of stroke. These patients were examined in both acute and chronic stages. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrated that one patient had …
