PURPOSE: Motivational interviewing (MI) techniques are used by health care teams to engage adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in health care self-management and pediatric to adult health care transition (HCT) planning efforts. The aim of this study was to assess the initial level of motivation of AYAs prior to receipt of HCT anticipatory guidance and to determine associations with demographic and health coverage factors.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 (C19) pandemic impacted youth mental/behavioral health with a 25% increase in prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide. Little is known about the emotional impact of C19 for children with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The purpose of the current study is to describe C19-related distress and worry among youth with CKD.

METHODS: C19 questionnaire adapted from the SARS-CoV-19 worry scale was completed for participants. Covariate data were collected at or prior to C19 questionnaire administration.Analyses examined rates of C19 emotional distress and worry and included logistic regression to identify associations with socioeconomic and disease-related covariates.

This study aimed to evaluate case characteristics associated with OAT evaluation and determine OAT prevalence in these children.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with a pediatric rheumatic disease are at increased risk of influenza due to immunosuppressive medication use. Despite initial quality improvement efforts, our influenza vaccination rate plateaued at 72%, which prompted a survey of patients and families to assess provider vaccine recommendations, influenza knowledge, and barriers to influenza vaccination.

METHODS: Patients on immunosuppressive medication or their parent were eligible to complete a survey between July 2019 and January 2020. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common pediatric infections. This study evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 3511 uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) isolated from pediatric patients in the United States from 2014 to 2023. The database from the SENTRY antimicrobial surveillance program from 89 medical centers was utilized as a data source. The antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the microbroth dilution technique against 24 antimicrobial agents. MICs were determined using the CLSI/EUCAST/FDA breakpoint criteria. All the antimicrobials reported susceptibility rates above 80% except for tetracycline (76.2%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (69.7%), and ampicillin-sulbactam (55.7%). PURPOSE: High-dose methotrexate (HDMTX) therapy is an important component in treatment regimens for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Courses are associated with a risk of renal injury, delayed elimination, and increased systemic toxicity. Recently hypoalbuminemia has been recognized as yet another risk factor.

METHODS: To examine the impact of serum albumin we reviewed 325 HDMTX 5 g/m2 courses in a cohort of 51 children treated on the NOPHO ALL 2008 protocol, dividing the courses into four groups with different levels of baseline albumin (A < 25 g/L, B 25-29 g/L, C 30-34 g/L and D ≥ 35 g/L).

Infants less than 1 year old diagnosed with KMT2A-rearranged (KMT2A-r) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at high risk of failure to achieve remission, relapse, and death due to leukemia, despite intensive therapies. Infant KMT2A-r ALL blasts are characterized by DNA hypermethylation. Epigenetic priming with DNA methyltransferase inhibitors increases the cytotoxicity of chemotherapy in preclinical studies. STUDY DESIGN: We used quality improvement methodology to develop iterative Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles to increase the use of SNAP for nonsevere AOM in 3 pediatric urgent care centers from October 2021 to June 2023. Annually, tens of thousands of U.S. children and adolescents are hospitalized with seasonal influenza virus infection. Both influenza vaccination and early initiation of antiviral treatment can reduce complications of influenza. Using data from two U.S. influenza surveillance networks for children and adolescents agedattended, laboratory-confirmed influenza for whom antiviral treatment is recommended, the percentage who received treatment was calculated. Trends in antiviral treatment of children and adolescents hospitalized with influenza from the 2017-18 to the 2023-2024 influenza seasons were also examined. Since 2017-18, when 70%-86% of hospitalized children and adolescents with influenza received antiviral treatment, the proportion receiving treatment notably declined. …

Pityriasis rosea is a self-limiting skin disorder that can occur in pediatric patients. We report an atypical presentation of a 23-month-old male with a generalized rash similar in appearance to pityriasis rosea. We then review the literature on pityriasis rosea and its application to pediatrics. Our patient had the rash as the only presentation which was also atypical in appearance as opposed to the regular rashes seen with pityriasis rosea which makes this case further interesting. We only treated the case symptomatically and the patient had spontaneous resolution of symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a rare congenital tumour. The risk of malignancy and recurrence are not well defined. Previous studies are small and report differing conclusions about the timing of surgery and the duration of follow-up. We studied the risk of malignant transformation and SCT recurrence after surgery to address these gaps.

METHODS: This was a global retrospective cohort study. Data of consecutive SCT patients was obtained from 145 institutes in 62 countries. Malignant transformation, defined as malignancy at initial resection, malignant recurrence or death due to malignancy, and its risk factors were analysed.

The incidence of Kawasaki Disease has a peak in the winter months with a trough in late summer/early fall. Environmental/exposure factors have been associated with a time-varying incidence. These factors were altered during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was performed through the International Kawasaki Disease Registry. Data from patients diagnosed with acute Kawasaki Disease and Multiple Inflammatory Syndrome-Children were obtained. Guideline case definitions were used to confirm site diagnosis. Enrollment was from 1/2020 to 7/2023. The number of patients was plotted over time. BACKGROUND: Children with obesity may experience weight-based discrimination as a result of weight bias and stigma, which can have deleterious effects on their health and wellbeing, including increased risk of dysregulated, maladaptive, and disordered eating such as restriction, purging, and binging. INTRODUCTION: Clean intermittent catheterisation (CIC) is the standard of care for treating neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), the most common bladder dysfunction in children diagnosed with spinal dysraphism (SD) and spinal cord injury (SCI). Failure to follow the prescribed CIC regimen results in urinary tract infections, incontinence and renal insufficiency. Adherence to CIC is suboptimal, with reported non-adherence rates of 18%-66%. OBJECTIVES: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a connective tissue disorder characterized by joint hypermobility and other systemic manifestations. Cardiovascular, autonomic symptoms and dysautonomia are frequently reported in adults with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and have been shown to have a negative impact on quality of life. However, there is scant literature on autonomic symptoms in pediatric patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This study aims to characterize cardiovascular symptoms and diagnoses in pediatric patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and evaluate the impact of autonomic symptoms on quality of life.
